It’s a new year yet the RIAA is still on that bullshit. But this time they’re trying to bring Comcast & AT&T along for the ride.
To bring you up to speed: The RIAA’s stopped lawsuits on file sharing, instead choosing to only continue monitoring and alerting ISP’s of suspicious activity. The ISP’s will then threaten to suspend or terminate the service of the individual
This makes no sense.
Neither Comcast or AT&T have any apparent ties to the RIAA. They don’t rely on them for any of their content and they have no monetary ties. They even use their download speeds in their sales pitch for the internet (what else would users be downloading?). Why are you stepping into the battle zone? Just take your $30 – $40 monthly and be happy. There’s no need for you to play watchdog for the RIAA. Are they helping you find people who don’t pay for cable? I didn’t think so.
I’m so glad I didn’t switch to AT&T this summer when they came to my door. I was ready to sign my ‘net away until they told me I’d have to be without it for two weeks before they could install everything. Since I have a PhD in common sense, I told them to take a hike and didn’t look back.
Hopefully they’ll come to their senses before they put pen to contract on this.

There’s only one problem with your theory MZ—at some point soon, all these telecoms and major content providers are either gonna be owned by the same handful of holding companies or they’re all gonna have some sort of alliance.
This is laying the ground worked for upper-tier content providers (music labels, hollywood studios, TV networks, etc) to build with the new distribution paradigm (i.e. ISPs and telecomms). On that level, it is fruitful for all involved to start the quid-pro quo’n now.

they’re gonna sue, price-out and watchdog all the little guys (us) into submission.

I don’t fileshare (hopefully ya’ll ain’t either.) They’re still about 5 years behind the curve if they really want to be up on what’s what.
I did think about the conglomerate angle BC, but I couldn’t finds any obvious ties. This is some favor for a favor type stuff, but why alienate your consumers before it’s an industry standard? You’d think they’d try to keep this under wraps as long as possible. It’s not even set in stone and we know what’s up. This is like releasing the specs for the Barrackaberry.
Plus the RIAA is an independent governing body.

i never knew the RIAA was a governing body of any sort. I just thought they were a consortium–sorta like all the sports team owners. If that’s the case, then it’s just a bunch of labels and bigwigs and lawyers actin’ stupid and greedy.
i ain’t limewried in years–it always jacked up my harddrive whenever i tried to install it so i gave up in like 2001.
The RIAA represents artist’s in collecting royalties and negotiating royalty percentages. Almost like keeping their hands on a cookie jar and they won’t let you hear a song unless they get their percentage.
They’re trying to hold onto a sinking model instead of coming up with new ways for royalties to be collected.
