Oversaturation of music is something we are going to have to get used to. No matter how many times you tell your friend Lil’ Killa Boy (my apologies if this is a real rapper) that he should maybe take a step away from the microphone, he’s still going to push his new single “Pop Guns” like it was the best Hip-Hop song to be recorded since “Juicy.” The one thing that we have to keep in mind is that, while most of the new stuff given to us is on the mediocre side of things, there will still be good music being made that is waiting to be heard.
Cold Legistics‘ debut instrumental project Deeper Than You Think is the first musical surprise to start off the new year. The producer, who resides in Maine, attributes J. Dilla and Madlib as influences on this album full of soul. When asked to submit a favorite track, his reply was the spacey track “Lost At Sea,” which is filled with the sounds of beautiful piano chords and haunting vocals that fits the title to a tee.
Without the use of a rapper, the sample-based producer expresses many feelings and emotions through sounds of the past. Twenty tracks deep, it stays fresh with clips of TV shows, speeches and interviews that keep the story moving. And it’s reviving listen in a musical world filled with “Lil’s,” “Boy’s” and “Killas.”

Here in Cincy over saturation is an understatement we have more lil this and yung thats than any other state in the union(IMO). Its to the point of being embarrassing. The sad part is that suburbs are where most of the “myspace thugs” live and breed.

I’m out in Toronto and I swear we’re dealing with the same issues. Everyone wants to be the hardest out but there are handful of really “nice” cats. I can’t blame myspace because for these dudes aspirations but shit what happened to the “fan”? It’s come to a point where “good” music is no longer the topic of disscussion. The gluttony gots to stop for the sake of the art. A lot of new dudes don’t embrace the culture. Don’t give me the ” I’m too young to know…” Do your homework. The half ass don’t cut it in these streets. – Cas Money
this is a good shot, i just came across this album the other day. i was working and wanted a nice instrumental soundtrack to fill in the dead space while i was sitting at my desk. between the fresh prince of bel-air samples and the lush aural backdrops, i found myself repeating several of the tracks for a closer listen.
every knat and his bother wants to be a rapper or the next big producer, this idea has been perpetuated by the internet and the ease of which the average consumer can purchase the gear and software needed to make music. this could be a good thing if there was more innovation coming from the masses all trying to do the same thing. problem is, they are all pretty much sounding the same. nice drums + sped up/slowed down/chopped up soul sample + cornball rapper = the new formula for a hit rap song and instant popularity. lot’s of pop and sizzle (pun intended) but no slow-burning flame. a lot of these cats are on some straight up bovine fecal matter.
got me over here sounding like my pops when he reminisces about the music from when he was about my age.
Very talented producer.. Produced I think 2 of the songs on my boy Blinks’ tape.
To combat supersaturation I rely on the collective discerning ear that is TSS.
Good post King. Nice beats, his style is similar to Wax Tailor. Peep out “Tales of the Forgotten Melodies”, if you aint up on Wax Tailor. Wish I had a link to hit cha wit.
