“Come Shop With Me…”
EDUTAINMENT By Gotty™ on January 11, 2009 at 9:43 pmAs a consumer, three of my favorite things are…
1. The fresh smell of opening a new pair of Nike’s.
2. Poppin’ a tag off of a ‘Lo shirt.
3. Picking up vinyl in all of it’s oversized, colorful glory.
Don’t get it twisted. I still like buying some CDs but vinyl is a different experience, especially the purchasing of it. I try to stay away from buying online, preferring the to go into the store, quiet as libraries & full of like minded music lovers engaging in the elbow-to-elbow art of digging. “Spelunkers of sound” as I like to call my fellow diggers.
My love affair with vinyl has been off and on but always life long. It started as a kid, always diggin’ thru my dad’s sparse collection as well as all of the crates my uncle had as a DJ. In the mid 90’s when my grandad closed his nightclub, JM & I put together a few dollars, bought my uncle’s Technics…and a garage half-full of records, spanning genres, sizes and decades. Love affair reborn. Until I left those motherfuckers in JM’s care while I was away for a while & the collection seemingly grew legs. Love lost.
Until the past year or so.
Currently, I don’t even have a turntable to play my records on. But by my logic, I consider all of these purchases as if I were courting Alicia Keys. I save up so that once or so a month, I can take an excursion to one of the few vinyl haunts in town, our “date” of sorts. I wine & dine with her, splurging lovely. She hasn’t given me any yet, as in I haven’t bought a turntable. But soon I will and with all of these records sitting here with me, it will be a heavenly experience. I will unwrap & play record after record…and then play another record.
Yesterday, I made one of those dates by killing some time before an appointment. It was planned. I had set aside allotted spending money for whatever I might find & let my fingers do the rest. Below you will find pics of my bounty. No real rhyme or reason to what I bought. I don’t pretend to be a connoisseur; my pics are indiscriminate & instinctive. I saw it, I checked the price first, then the condition. If I wanted it, I grabbed it. Done deal.
Juan had ALL of these on vinyl when we were kids.
I have no intentions of deejaying a party so I rarely by 12″ singles. But this, this was a small piece of history. At .99¢, I’ll take it.
One of the better aspects of this shop is that they stock a lot of recent releases in vinyl. Last time I was @ this spot, they had BE but I passed because funds were tight and I picked Rising Down instead. This trip, easy snatch once I saw One Day… sitting there as well. They had UMC but I passed because…
…I like to buy full albums that I can play end to end. Since it’s a manual experience, listening to a record requires that it has to be thorough. I don’t want to play one or two tracks & then end up having to put on something else. Honestly, I avoid most rap albums for this reason, opting to grab jazz or reggae albums. In the end though, this is my way of deeming an album of 5 Cig (or at least a strong 4+) by acquiring it on vinyl. But that doesn’t really apply to…
…this one. I bought it solely off the packaging alone.
Kanye is second only to Puff when realizing that packaging & presentation are huge in all aspects. Peep the extras included here.
I didn’t buy all vinyl. I saw this sitting by the register as I was checking out.
The Bad Plus does good cover songs & I love covers. The damage was already done; what was $8 more going to do?
Here’s a few more random ones I picked up & I’ll save you the stories…but you better believe there’s one for each. We’ll play Q&A for these – You want to hear the story? Ask me & I’ll answer via the comments lol.

only retards and hipsters (or a combination of both) buy vinyl of albums easily made available in other superior formats.

Gotty’s gonna do some old school dance routine when he throws that New Edition on the turntables

Only lames and virgins (or a combination of both) can’t recognize the value that vinyl has to the musical experience.
And you call yourself a producer. Your shit sound like silverware banging on a Rubbermaid trash can in your grandpappy’s basement.
This is one of the main reasons I need to get a job, I wanna start collecting vinyl. It just seems like it’s more enjoyable than getting a CD.
lol @ TC
i knew it was gonna be you
on some, “Gotty, your old-ass can fall back, I got this…”
“Your shit sound like silverware banging on a Rubbermaid trash can in your grandpappy’s basement.”

Hater Chris hates his own myspace music
“the value that vinyl has to the musical experience.”
lemme guess
it sounds “warmer”
lol. it still doesnt make 808s & heartbreak a good album.
Your shit sound like silverware banging on a Rubbermaid trash can in your grandpappy’s basement.

^So since we got you…does that mean TSS is doing something right? Wait…was that a compliment, Hater Christopher?
^ by that logic, chris…
to YOU, EVERYBODY must be doing something right, since you hate on everybody, lol
Hating on you Chris is like having a wedgie. It’s definitely a burden but once you pull it out, you forget in the next 5 seconds. You’re nobody.
Take the box that the Fruity Loops software came in and suffocate yourself with it.

Well sir, where as digital might be clearer, it’s compressed. Vinyl = fat, full sound.
Don’t you have Easter eggs to be painting or some shit?
Compulsive shopper…perhaps a trait of a Gemini? lol, I know the feeling

VERY compulsive. I was I only go out to stores every few weeks. If I go to a store, it’s almost a given that I’ll be walking out w/something. Today I went to my bank, whose branch is in the grocery store. I came out w/a big bag of Kit Kats & Air Heads suckers.
Gotty’s gonna do some old school dance routine when he throws that New Edition on the turntables

Nah yo. I’m still perfecting the hell out of my Tootsie Roll lol.
Only lames and virgins (or a combination of both) can’t recognize the value that vinyl has to the musical experience.

iono about virgins lol but definitely lames. There’s a since of nostalgia there when buying vinyl but see the sound quality argument. Plus, that nostalgia…that’s a history lesson w/the kids in my life. I’m one of them quiet dads who only opens up when you start talking to him about music lol.
This is one of the main reasons I need to get a job, I wanna start collecting vinyl.

Most vinyl is hella cheap. You’d be surprised.

as for gotty why u pick that main ingredient vinyl?

The Chris got it in me (pause). It was something about those barechested men that made me tingle.
Being an audiophile/tech-junkie/science-geek, I can honestly say that a PROPERLY set up analog (vinyl) turntable will definitely sound better than any cd/dvd player. There are just so many details that vinyl reveals in the music, not to mention the sound is more natural. I think that our ears are getting too used to this mp3 bullshit; then again I doubt many people listen to music on anything other than their PC to care anyway.
ps: Gotty, what do you use to digitize your vinyl collection??? I use this cool little box made by this company called ADS. Just hook it up to your decks and USB it into your PC then BAM!!! it’s done.
Flea – I haven’t copped anything yet. I’ve been reading up on a few diff setups. I don’t want to spend a grip b/c, like i said, I ain’t planning on doing any parties or none of that. But i want quality. I’ve gotten so many diff suggestions, I’m just setting aside dollars, continuing to buy records & waiting to the time is right.
I had to make room in the crib is well & i just did that a few weeks ago so I plan to move on something in the next few weeks/months.
Email me any bright ideas you might have.
http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/?p=4245
^ LC’s little suggestion is on my “this is an inexpensive, suitable option” although I looked @ buying a used 1200 and a small setup.
Gotty, I still got two 1200s from my deejayin’ days. i love my technics, man… Maybe when i move into the new crib the honey-dip will allow me a music room and i’ll set up again, dust off my 12 crates and go to town when she get on my nerves…
^ hehe, sounds like where i’m @ in life right now.
@ Gotty: I’d stay away from that Teac stuff, I’ve owned some of their stuff in the past and it ain’t too great. If you want to convert your vinyl into tracks on your PC, or just listen to your records you should just buy a USB turntable from Numark or Technics. More importantly ALWAYS get the best speakers that you can afford, they make a serious difference.
That Main Ingredient is pause worthy. I am sorry I missed TC’s daily mollywhooping of Hater Chris. But he did make a good point vinyl did not make 808 & Heartbreak any better. I guess a broken watch is right 2 times a day.
@ Conseco: LOL!!! Yeah, you gotta have your personal music room my ninja. I converted my bedroom into the “lab”, sound-proofed, acoustically calibrated, totally isolated for hiphop enjoyment.

Me too…so there.
Great post G-Man.
As for Chris,
The only thing that shuts up a hater is the crippling wave of fear and self-doubt that follows screwing up their opportunities to succeed so thoroughly and completely that they’re forced to realize that they truly have no one to blame but themselves.
So for 2009, I say we blow up Chris–link him on all our blogs, pages… call all our connects and get him some gigs and interviews. in short, get Chris all the exposure and shine he needs.
By the first spring thaw people will realize what a talentless, myopic and self-deluded child Chris is and maybe someone somewhere will feel sorry enough for him that they’ll buy him something shiny that makes cute noises so he can sit in a corner and play with it whenever he needs to feel better about himself.
Flea – email me w/some suggestions. I’ll add it to my growing list.
What specifically happened w/you & Teac’s?
I repeat, I’m not expecting 808’s to become better by hearing it on vinyl. the packaging was dope. I’m a sucker.
But i got a hunch too.
By the way, Chris: I just listened to every track on your MS page—out of respect for the basic concept of giving folks the benefit of the doubt—and all I can say this:
Crackhead strippers and Brett Michael’s reality show contestants don’t expose their shortcomings to the degree that you have yours on that page. Based on your talent and nothing else, my advice to you is restrict all your comments here to “Please” “Help” and “thank you.”

I feel you G$. It must be a Gemini trait.
The other day I was killing 45 mins in a record store before the consignment guy got there, so I added to my vinyl collection, which simply gets stays put in a closet until I have my next house party.
For $8 bucks, I happily copped…
50 Cent- “How To Rob” Single w/In Too Deep on front.
Gap Band- “Early In The Morning” single, w/extended version (yes!)
Har Mar Superstar – 4 Track Single from The Handler W/”Cut Me Up”
and the gem…
Roger – The Saga Continues, which I’ve never heard before and am geeked to listen to.
$8 bucks WELL spent.
I have a feeling all music is going to be digital, and record stores are going to go back to just that.. RECORD stores..
Vinyl is something that can’t be explained til it is experienced. If you have never purchased a vinyl record and placed the needle on it for the first time, then you have no business talking about it.
Vinyl is making a comeback..
Mark my words..
Vinyls been making a comeback. Wasnt it in the news a year or so ago that despite the music industry taking a dive vinyl sales are actually up?
I buy records every now and then, my Dad collects like crazy so I just use him as my record store.
Also, I don’t think Hater Chris’s beats arent all that bad, better than most myspace producers, how bout that.
My first piece of vinyl was Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It’s still at my Mom’s crib, buried in one of the dozens of record filled milkcrates she has.
Vinyl is making a comeback..
========================
It’s a digital age & I dunno if the new generation of music lovers will have the same reverence for vinyl when an album is just a few mouse clicks away.
I would like to contribute to your turntable funds, Gotty. lol
ooh marvin gaye here my dear. classic album
Maaaaan I would love to still go vinyl shopping but I already have WAY TOO much vinyl!!!
I miss those days of going (usually to London) & spending a small fortune on some of the hottest tracks with the anticipation of the hour long train journey home before splitting open the plastic wrapping & put the needle to the groove.
Some nice purchases there.
Nuff props for this post, I’ll give it 5 cigs!
Bounce
Props to the Inspector Deck and Dilla post Sherm. Unlike Teef’s love of Deck swung with Excellent Sword Play. I enjoy his music.
For the sake of the DJ, we got to keep Vinyl alive.
After hearing Hater Chris’s beats, I see and hear why he is angry. Listening to that shit would piss me off too. LOL

Can you stand the rain, no pressure, no pressure, cos I want cha and I need yah!
Yeah Heartbreak and Al B Sure! In effect mode.
that B-Rich joint is a B-More classic.
@ Gotty.
Your speakers are the key of any setup. I’d rather spend more money on excellent speakers than on an excellent turntable. Imho the turntable matters does matter but less than the speakers.
Of course, you’ll prolly have good speakers.
