Yahoo! Sports has gained access to previously sealed documents regarding the whole Barry Bonds/BALCO testimonies. The news: Bonds was not doing anything illegal by taking “The Clear” because it wasn’t classified as a steroid until 2005. That’s important…because the BALCO labs closed well before that.
Evidence that the Clear was legal and technically not a steroid until the Anabolic Steroids Act of 2004 took effect in January 2005 could emerge as central to Bonds’ defense, experts say. Perjury questions must be unambiguous to win a conviction, and the testimony of Catlin and Novitzky could establish that the government knew about ambiguity concerning the Clear before Bonds took the stand.
Experts say prosecutors might have intentionally asked Bonds what they knew to be ambiguous questions – never defining steroids or making a distinction between drugs that were illegal or merely banned by many major sports.
“This case has been presented as Barry Bonds lying about steroids,” said Christopher Cannon, a San Francisco defense attorney with extensive experience in federal perjury cases. “The government’s theory is that he was taking the Clear. If the government knows the Clear wasn’t a steroid – then when Barry said he wasn’t taking a steroid, he was telling the truth.”
Sure hope Marc Ecko’s ass didn’t deface that ball yet.

May not have been illegal, may not technically be cheating, but Bonds’ reputation is tainted already.
Baseball itself is tainted @ this point (not that I really care). I just thought it was foul as hell how they were burying him under the jail early, discrediting his accomplishments & all that jazz.
Be real though, even before football, baseball players probably do need performance enhancers. They play the longest fuckin season ever (the play from warm to hot to bitter cold).
BB is arguably the best baseball player EVER to play the game.
He may be the best, but he did get big as hell from his rookie year.
My only thing is if everybody (or say 75%) of the league was taking something it’s not a big deal. If they’re cool w/ pissing green when they’re 65 let ‘em.

ironically this was the thing that cleared McGwire–andro wasn’t classified as a steroid until after he quit and that was the only thing he publically admitted to doing (still a lie as anyone who knows McGwire and roids knows you take andro with steroids–no one takes andro alone it’s a steroid booster.) But what screwed McGwire was his stunningly asisinine performance in front of Congress.

I’m usually one to resist the usual thinking (in some circles like this one) about how superstar, usually black, athletes are persecuted by the media (not saying it doesn’t happen, but I think people cry foul about that too much). With that said: IT’S BEEN A WITCHHUNT AGAINST BARRY AND, despite his technical cheating, HE SHOULD GET OFF SCOTT-FREE. They’ve been going at this guy for like six years and didn’t even officially start the proceedings until after like four years. Which means…they don’t have much of a case, and yet they were hellbent after him. It isn’t right. Is he as perfect as Hank Aaron? No. But we live in the 2000s. Which means that, when you add in media persecution, Barry had to deal with as much hassle as Hank did. Did he have to deal with as much RACISM as Hank? No, maybe not as much racism per se, but definitely as much grief, and probably as many death threats. The irrational hatred against Barry is almost as much as it was against Hank, and thus Barry deserve a great deal of respect just for GOING THROUGH it with his head held high. People HATE Bonds. Did he cheat, technically? Yeah, probably. But that’s no reason for the amount of hatred and persecution that he’s had to go through–especially not when you factor in all the other disclaimers (dude was a great player anyway, 75% of the players were cheating including pictures, etc).
Is Barry 100% innocent? Probably not. But he deserves to go free. He’s already suffered enough. Trial by media. Trial by collusion of MLB teams not signing a dude who could have still been one of the top 30 players last year, despite his age.
