KiD CuDi performing “Day N’ Nite” at the 10.Deep Party

I’m convinced that LC is like Della Reese from Touched By An Angel, flying around blessing us with her great taste in music when we really need it. A couple of weeks ago, she hit Contra off with a Shawn Jackson video that helped restore his faith in our music. About a week ago, she sent me this “Day N’ Nite” song from Kid Cudi.

When they make a movie of my life, “Day N’ Nite” will be the song that accompanies the montage that shows me (played by Jeffrey Wright) tossing and turning in my bed, facing pre-grad school transitional anxiety, insomnia and a break up (actress played by Robin Givens of course).

Cudi’s deadpan delivery is the perfect way to display his angst. It’s matter of fact and just as depressing as someone screaming at the top of their lungs. His monotone, calm repetition of the final words of each line is so brilliantly anti-pop that it is reflective of the way the speaker positions himself outside of society. Cudi captures those all too elusive ideas of loss, angst and loneliness that great song writing is built on. It’s amazing to think that he’s relatively new to this music shit.
