In conversation several days ago, I mentioned to my man that the idea of “gangsta” music is a farce in this day & age. While “street” music still exists, the buying public is no longer under the blinded belief that Rapper A is actually out there trappin’ & cappin’ before descending on the studio to record it all on the reels.
But there was a time when our studio gangsters were very much believable to us, if only because what they were saying was fresh. Swap meets, gold D’s & firearms mixed with poetry made the music better than a motion picture. Rock Steady DJ DV One loads the clip to the hilt with banger after banger of West Coast gangsta shit, 57 minutes worth in fact. During the course of that hour, he conducts a course on the who’s who & what they contributed to in the form of song. King Tee, several appearances of OG Cube before the movies, MC Eiht, Quik…hell I even think I heard a Playa Hamm verse off on this motherfucker. In other words, DV’s trip down thru the memory lane is more than complete & official.
Locs not included.

ahhh, the good ol’ days

I’m pretty sure I had something useful to add to all this studio gangsta talk, but I caught a glimpse of Kim Coles on Living Single and I feel the need to share the fact that I would put a marvelous hurting on her. Twice.
AND he got Mac Mall on this! the mix ain’t even halfway through yet!
Kim Coles carries her weight well. she ain’t no small girl.

Time for another chamber:
“Yo, first of all son, peep the arson
Many brothers I be sparkin’ and bustin’ mad light inside the dark
Call me dough snatcher, just the brother for the rapture
I handglide, holdin’ on strong, hard to capture
Extravagant, RZA baked the track and it’s militant
Then I react, like a convict, and start killin’ shit
It’s manifested, the Gods work like appliances
Dealin’ in my cypher I revolve around sciences
The 9th chamber, leave you trapped inside my hallway
You try to flee but you got smoked up by the doorway
No question, I send your ass back, right to the essence
Your whole frame is smothered in dirt, now how you restin’
While I’ll be trapped by sounds, locked behind loops
Throwin’ niggas off airplanes cause Cash Rules
Everything Around Me black, as you can see
Swallow this murder one verse like God Degree
Then analyze my soundtrack for satisfaction
You adapt like a flashback chain reaction”

these 2 mixes prove why rap was better back then and should only be done by certain dudes.
rap nowadays is like a bunch of mutts, fools got the game fucked up and you can’t tell what’s what, it was better when people respected the pedigree and didn’t dilute the bloodline
Good looks on this one. West Coast gangsta rap = perfect soundtrack for the New Zealand summer. Who woulda thought

Mac Mall – Sik Wit Dis & Dru Down – Pimp Of The Year…….Oh Baby!!!
DV 1 aka Toby Fresh has been making dope tapes since the late 80′s/ early 90′s. His newest thing has been to release a weekly 20 min mix of various types of music…I’m pretty sure that Gotty’s gonna lace you all with them soon…….
I remember being in 6th grade boostin’ markers with this cat. We then proceeded to tag the fuck out of this school that was around the way…That was my official intro to Graf. From then on for the next 8-10 years I was addicted to writing, spraying, etching, my name in as many places around the city as possible….ahh, the good old days.
And Def Vandal One is still keepin’ shit fresh!!
Yo petey,
Nice track. Diddy used that sample for the intro (and maybe outro) to Press Play if I remember correctly.
GANSTA GANSTA!!!! 415, mac mall, mac dre, e-40, NWA, PPC, Too $hort, Cube, King Tee, X-raided, D.O.C, totally insane…to name a few… this joint is OFFFFFFIIIICCCIAL!!

I was just listening to my west coast shit yesterday (all i got are old tapes) I dont know how I find King Tee’s – ‘At Your own Risk’ & Ice Cube’s – Bootlegs & B-Sides… that shit was a helluva rush….
