In conversation several days ago, I mentioned to my man that the idea of “gangsta” music is a farce in this day & age. While “street” music still exists, the buying public is no longer under the blinded belief that Rapper A is actually out there trappin’ & cappin’ before descending on the studio to record it all on the reels.

But there was a time when our studio gangsters were very much believable to us, if only because what they were saying was fresh. Swap meets, gold D’s & firearms mixed with poetry made the music better than a motion picture. Rock Steady DJ DV One loads the clip to the hilt with banger after banger of West Coast gangsta shit, 57 minutes worth in fact. During the course of that hour, he conducts a course on the who’s who & what they contributed to in the form of song. King Tee, several appearances of OG Cube before the movies, MC Eiht, Quik…hell I even think I heard a Playa Hamm verse off on this motherfucker. In other words, DV’s trip down thru the memory lane is more than complete & official.
