“Don’t Bet On Me. I’m A Longshot…”
AUDIO By MZ on December 28, 2008 at 12:18 pmThere’s always something special about achieving something after facing doubt or adversity. If for some strange reason, everything has come easy for you it’d be hard to explain, but the gratification that comes along with success makes the accomplishment that much better. From personal experience I know these instances are what build character and change the direction of one’s life.
Colin Munroe’s “Piano Lessons” off his Colin Munroe Is The Unsung Hero mixtape exemplifies this mindset perfectly. The premise of the song is simple: dude quits his piano lessons and is told he’ll never amount to nothing. In the end he overcomes despite shunning the conventional path. Sonically, Black Milk adds a Tronic touch to a backdrop that otherwise would lie somewhere in the realm of Coldplay. Munroe’s voice is similar to Adam Levine’s in tone, but in a lower register and more gravity that meshes well with the harder Hip-Hop bassline. Joell Ortiz adds the icing on the cake with a verse on the end to cap the song. If you haven’t heard the mixtape yet, this song will give you a good idea of what he & his music are about.

Dope song off of a dope mixtape. Colin Munroe is one of the artists to watch in ‘09.
I got a hard copy of this in the mail the other day. Pleasant surprise b/c i have no idea how i got it, but i love having a hard copy of music. So to whoever the gracious soul was who sent it, peace & blessings unto you.
I forgot I put this on my iPod, I’m listening now, and it’s fresh.
I swear, y’all are good for bringing attention to stuff I overlook and/or underappreciate.
Muchos gracias
not really feelin dude’s vibe but Longshot is a great song no matter what way you put it. i’m open to him growing on me pause.
wasnt feeling the guys mixtape as a whole…couple stand out tracks here and there but nothing to write home about
my $0.02
Hate to add to the less than stellar vibe, but I wasn’t really feeling the mixtape either. I appreciate all the associations he has working for him, but his pop instincts are too blatant for my tastes. There seems to be a lack of patience and nuance to his delivery and lyrics. In my view, he can’t wait to belt out another anthemic hook. There’s something to be something to be said for being reserved and making the listener wait. Any of the pop or big rock bands (Akon, T-Pain, Coldplay or U2 for instance) know how to build up to a hook. Munroe always seems to be in a hurry to get there.
In other words, he might be a little raw. Maybe he’ll develop into something better, cause the talent is there for sure. I’ll keep checking for his work as long as cats like y’all co-sign and who knows, I might buy a CD someday. For one of my bitches of course…
I liked his mixtape; I agreed he still has some polishing up of his skills. But that can be said of any new artist.

New blog and mix tape at my site
I never heard of dude… But after listening, I downloaded the mixtape. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I really like the song “I want those flashing lights”. It’s something different to throw into my very slim rotation.
heh heh, MIA, coldplay.colin munroe. seriously: even white people are embarrassed about your white taste. do you not know TV on the Radio, Roots Manuva, or The Bug or Wiley - or anything underground? Embarrassed for you…
I’ve played this mixtape a couple times through and it’s decent. Like KThundo says, couple stand outs, but overall nothing ground breaking. Piano Keys is one of the best on the album.
Also, if this computer voice octave alteration every bar (I don’t know what else to call it) becomes the new autotune I’m going to kill someone.
I can’t say that I’m really feelin’ Colin Munroe’s style at this point. I will agree that its rather underdeveloped talent that he’s working with at this point. But I think Daniel Merriweather or Matthew Santos are much better than this guy.
Bad song!! Depressing and almost monotone.
