Words By Jesse H.
Dear Black Community,
I would like to formally apologize on behalf of the White race. You see, apparently stealing Jazz, Rock and Roll and countless styles from the Black community wasn’t enough. Now we’re officially after Hip-Hop.
Professor Ferenc Szasz of the University of New Mexico has proposed a theory suggesting that rap battles originated in Scotland, by way of an art called “flyting.” Flyting is apparently some old method of trading insults used in Scottish pubs by old ass poets who wanted to bring to attention how much of a beef-witted apple john their enemies were.
Now, to be fair, I don’t know for sure what color skin Ferenc Szasz has, but I also don’t know any Black people named Ferenc (furthermore, I don’t know any Black people who want to credit Whites with the creation of Hip-Hop). But, regardless of the similarity between “flyting” and a rap battle, I think it’s a rather classless move on the professor’s part to be claiming Hip-Hop as a Scottish invention based on one similarity. Not only does it discount the breadth of the eclectic elements that make up the Hip Hop culture, but its just an all-around douchebag move from an undoubtedly attention starved professor, who saw 8 Mile and subsequently thought he understood Hip Hop.
Ferenc, if you’re reading this, let’s have it out: you vs. me in an epic throwdown of wits and academic knowledge of Hip-Hop. We’ll call it “the flyte of the century.” I’m representing the Bronx, you can have Scotland. To make it easier for you, we’ll use the 8 Mile model, since that’s likely the only example of Hip-Hop you know. Three rounds. We’ll flip a coin to see who goes first. Place? Why TSS of course, unless you want to fly my broke ass out to New Mexico so I can embarrass you in front of your students.
Rap Music Originated In Medieval Scottish Pubs, Claims American Professor [Telegraph UK]

Tell em y u mad….
dont front Gotty…MC Szasz would eat your lunch flyting while doing a backspin on cardboard throwing up burners and tags with one hand and scratching Grandmixer DXT’s part from RockIt with the other
^^^
Gotty didn’t write this.
Mr. S to the Z isn’t the first to attach a Euro-centric worldview to music/culture. Look no further than the logo on the jacket your man is wearing.
The Rock + Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum was launched by the founders of RollingStone, who almost from day one insisted on perpetuating the myth that Black Blues, Jazz and R+B artists merely contributed to Rock +Roll as opposed to actually invented it. (Ignoring the fact that even the phrase “rock + roll” was a black term for sex as in “i wanna rock and roll you all night long”. Word to Big Momma Thorton, et al.)
Regardless you can find several Prof F on every high school + college campus in America–white teachers (both male and females) teaching such nonsense in the name of promoting unity and trying to seem smarter than they really are. It’s almost impossible to pass their courses without buying into and regurgitating their foolishness.
For what it’s worth, battling goes back to Tap Dance when cats formed a circle and swapped danced steps, parodying each other… it was more of an old school cypher than anything else. Jazz musicians used to do something called Cuttin’ where musicians would face off and battle going note for note, riff for riff to see who was the nicest/see who had skills worth learning from… And like everything else, at some point it all goes back to varying African traditions of competitive musicianship/storytelling, etc.
Then again, maybe somebody took a right turn and landed in the UK… or maybe the Scots and Celts got swagjacked by the Moors and Arabs.. so whaddoo I know.
After all, Christopher Columbus did discover America.
“Words by Jesse H.”
come on now……
Nothin new
To be fair, he’s obviously not trying to rewrite cultural history, he’s just awkwardly attached hip-hop to his otherwise rather boring thesis to get people like you and me to pay it some fleeting attention.
by the time I’ve clicked ‘okay, i’m done’ I’ll have forgotten all about this jarringly naive publicity stunt….
***grits & grinds teeth*** Get the fuck outta here!!! Stupid nonsense.
This isn’t some move to “steal rap from black people” it just is showing that accomplished poets of the past exhibited the same form of rivalries that current rap artists have today.
“it just is showing that accomplished poets of the past exhibited the same form of rivalries that current rap artists have today.”
=======
then why not say that? why say “we started it” which is what this clown is doing? it’s more of the black-culture-is-only-as-valued-as-its-potential euro-centric-origins crap.
the irony is the Scots have had similar struggles with Great Britain, who for generations have had scholars and historians claiming that Scottish culture is only as valued as an Great Britain’s opinion of it.
preach Black Canseco……
Dr. Szasz if you’re gonna claim that “Rap originated in medieval Scottish pubs” you need to holla at KRS-One and Chuck D ‘fore you come ’round these parts b/c “we don’t believe you; you need more people.”
Is that the professor in the pic?
dude could definitely get it.
no homo.
what up my peeps? I’m checkin in from the muthaland right now. Colombia for those of you that don’t remember. I’m having the big blown out wedding tomorrow. Yes, I already got married once, but that was through the court, this one’s through the church. I’ll put some pics up on my myspace and facebook pages in a few days.
Anyways, i found some links for y’all on your boy Ferenc Szasz:

The dozens is not the definition of hip hop.
(With respect to Paul Moonie)…
Yall better watch what you post on your site.
Don’t let it be too good, white man will come and take that too!!!
maybe its just people being people and doing what we do best which is insult each other and make up stupid songs / get drunk and fall down.
as for white people stealing everything off black people pffft… maybe in terms of popular culture (the most meaningful and lasting of ALL cultures…) but what i heard was that blues music originated from white 17th century english parlour music (but then i was brought up in a clan of nazi skinhead white supremicist cave dwelling half-rat-half-pig eating devil worshipping psychopaths) & 17th english parlour music probably originated in ethnic-albanian gypsy folk etc etc you get the idea we’re all stuck in this shit together ad adenum
professor guys just trying to get some publicity after being stuck in a university for a hundred thousand years
but yeah, i like scottish people so whatever
Good words, Canseco…
Co-sign Canseco, perhaps the UK Telegraph is just as responsible for ignoring Journalism ethics and using such a biased headline. Whatever the case, the claim is clearly made in the article that the whole culture “originated” in Scotland. Regardless, I’m glad to see such thoughtful responses to something I intended to come across as more tongue-in-cheek. Obviously I’m not going to burn this guys house down in the name of Kool Herc, but I’m with Don King in thinking that it is a jarringly naive publicity stunt.
Word to YOUR mother.
RIP Freddie!
