Blaqkout.
According to Kurupt, that’s the title of the upcoming joint project from him and the illustrious DJ Quik. If you know me at all, you’d know I believe Quik to be the Hershey’s Take 5 of modern music production.
But, I’d be lying if If I said I was looking forward to this album.
Ever since the Quiksta’s Fixxers debacle went straight-to-MySpace, and he abandoned the live instrumentation that made his beats so unparalleled, I’ve questioned his current career stance.
At close to 39-years-old, Mr. Blake is a ticking time bomb of talent with a dwindling wick. Instead of doing joint projects with artists in slow motion, he should be cooped up in some remote Polynesian lab, puffing Ports and picking up the pace on his final solo masterpiece. Only to follow it up by Quincy Jonesing the game with some undiscovered R&B prodigy from SoCal.
Not rapping on tracks with Kurupt.
In 2009, who really wants to hear Young Gotti stumble out “Bitch, it’s the DP Gang, bitch,” over a Quik medley? That’s not helping. As a matter of fact, it’s a step backwards.
That’s like the Celtics signing Joe Smith to play center. A Lambo with a V-6. Or the listening to “Freebird” through Guitar Hero.
Mediocrity should never touch greatness.
Quik, please realize your potential. Before things went awry, you were so close. Tragedies and poor decisions are in the past, and now it’s a new day. It’s time to finally master your craft like the architect you are and make an unquestionable classic. Fuck it…go win a Grammy. With the garbage that’s continually victorious every February, it’s yours for the taking.
If you don’t reach though, it’ll never happen.

I can’t front I thought Quik was going to be that next “go to” guy after he produced Truth Hurts “So Addictive” but like you said bad decisions after that tanked his momentum.
Take 5′s are hella good lol!
And I lked the production on The Fixxer’s joint. Different from Quik’s usual stuff (I was just listening to Under The Influence…so slept on) but fits right in with all the audotuned, tehcno/trance/rave influenced music that’s been coming out recently. But a Kurupt album? Not interested. Quik needs to do more outside production & introduce his sound to new audiences.
Only to follow it up by Quincy Jonesing the game with some undiscovered R&B prodigy from SoCal.

At this stage in the game, that’s what he should be doing. I don’t think a new Quik album is high on anybody’s radar. He should focus on finding a protege who he can lace with his beats.
THIS SHIT IS GONNA BANNNNNG! KURUPTEDQUIKNESS .. I THOUGHT HE WAS DOIN AN ALBUM WITH PETE ROCK AND PREMIER I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT
http://www.zshare.net/audio/51255930f10c3898/
Quik does not get the love his deserves. He should be a top 5 producer.
quik should be a top 5 guy but he ain’t. he doesn’t have the output or the top 5 quality… Timb hit that indian style harder than seeing thru a burka a few years back. Quik’s alway teetered on greatness. Same with Kurupt.
you never know what you’re gonna get from dude… maybe he’s the westcoast Rakim, maybe he’s just another dude on a label who never focuses long enough to write more than 8 great bars at a time. i’m leaning towards the latter at this point.
but the potential for something good, a la Murs/9th Wonder is still there.
but if i hear another weed/dpg reference before i hear a decent story, concept i’mo hit delete with the quickness.
Quik’s always teetered on greatness. Same with Kurupt.
===============================
Yup.
But Quik as a top 5 producer? I don’t see it. He hasn’t worked with the same caliber artist as a Dre or a Pharrell & his sound has been inconsistent to say the least.. Top 10, definitely.
I love westcoast funk, but weed, itches and switches only get you so many 16s.
The dudes with more versatie rhymes–Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born, some of the non-thizzed out bay cats, etc. just don’t get much burn out here, as i’m learning.
I guess Game had some versatility… but yeah, you gotta bring it on more than a couple topics.
i gotta do a list of slept-on, try these guys out emcees.
once i escape these flames, that is.
This album does have potential though, if both dudes bring it like we all know they are capable of bringing it.
On the flipside, this also could be a total waste of time and effort.
Either way I’ll check for it, since Quik is one of my favorite producers and emcees.
So guess what, TSS fam?
Fire’s have started up again… I’m near Brea, if you’re wondering.
The smoke is coming—you can smell it in the air. Never a good sign.
Packing up important docs so I can bounce—My SS info, bank stuff, medical records…
Gotta grab my writing stuff—laptops, backup files. Realizing that I really need a smaller USB-based harddrive as opposed to the firewire/AC based MetalBox ones I got now. I love ‘em but they come with 20 feet of chord and plugs you gotta futz thru. Plus they’re too heavy to carry if you gotta run like hell like i might have to now… Oh well, 250GB for $100 seemed like a good idea 2 years ago when i got ‘em.

That’s crazy. Be safe, BC.
Quik did some behind the scenes work, engineering/recording, on the “Murs For President” album, plus he’s been working with Terrace Martin, who also worked on the Murs album.
I really wanna see Quik win. A mixture of working with mainstream and underground rappers like Snoop and Murs, plus knowns and unknowns to keep his name out there, and working with dudes like Terrace to keep the ideas flowing is a good way to stay busy & stay fresh.
I liked that joint he did with Luda, “Spur Of The Moment”…that Southern demeanor and his melodic tracks go well together, I think

The version on “Trauma” was iller IMO. Sounded more like Quik.
kurupt great? “nah not in my lifetime wasn’t in my right mind..” I ain’t knockin’ homies talent but he aint that raw in my humble opinion…
be safe BC
I hope you and everybody else emerge unscathed from those fires. I was affected by a fire a year and a half ago, and I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone. It’s not a good feeling to know you’re losing and you can’t do a damn thing about it.
Be safe Canseco
i got the socal evacuation blues… http://www.hustleknockin.com/hustleknockin/2008/11/so-were-evacuating-from-the-socal-fires-again.html
thanx y’all. holla soon.
Quik Needs HOT materials Out for the 2009 !
Cuz if u’re the one of the greatests, u must be relevant.
if not you’re a living legend, but the game runs without u…
Yeah homie, get out of there safe & in one piece.
Kurupt & Daz’s firsr solo albums were both good. After that, they sorta drifted off my radar.
‘BUCK BOUNCE’ WITH QUIK/8BALL & MJG HAS TO BE MY FAVOURITE SONG
He should focus on finding a protege who he can lace with his beats.
======================================
Word. As good as Kurupt is/was he needs to find one of the West Coast’s up-and-comers to work with. Preferrably somebody with a helluva spit game.
I must be buggin’, cause outside of “We Can Freak It”, I wasn’t feeling this one. Must’ve been the whole East Coast/West Coast gimmick that threw me off.
The best Kurupt CD for my money is “The Streetz Is A Mutha”. It’s prolly the best album to come from Tha Dogg Pound post “Dogg Food”, solo or otherwise.
Be safe BC!
@AmpGeez
“The best Kurupt CD for my money is “The Streetz Is A Mutha”. It’s prolly the best album to come from Tha Dogg Pound post “Dogg Food”, solo or otherwise.”
Agreed.
I will even take it a step further and say it was a 5 mic album.
@Black Canseco
First, glad to see you’re bouncing out of there. I know people that stayed during the last fires. As you said, you grab the stuff that can’t be replaced and get out.
Be safe.
But…
“quik should be a top 5 guy but he ain’t. he doesn’t have the output or the top 5 quality… ”
Wow.
Quik is easily in my Top 5 and has that quality (IMO). A dude that played nearly every instrument on the nearly classic “Rhythm-al-ism” AND recorded AND mixed that ish?
Dude is one of the best producers in Hip-Hop period.
(And I loved The Fixxers. First time I heard it play on the radio – World Premiere – I instantly was bobbin’ my head. That production was Quik and too sik)
And Kurupt is like the dude you went to high school with who could have easily made it to the NBA but never did. Why? Because he was so good that he didn’t have to work as hard as the other cats who eventually did make it and so he didn’t.
Practice? © Iverson
Kurupt’s a beast and had he taken his gift more seriously, he would easily be considered one of the best on the mic.
@ Blac Cans…
Careful homie. We all wish u and yours well.
@Etcetera…
You have good taste. Buck Bounce is SUPER underrated. that beat is 2028.
I’ll say it now, and i’ll say it again.
Quik is my favorite hip hop artist. Period.
Nas is my favorite rapper.
Dre and Premier are tied for production.
But Quik does it ALL.
And Kurupt?
Top 20 of all time..
My list is definitely not the norm with most cats at TSS, but i stick by my shit..
I’m looking forward to this album more than anything else set to drop this year..
@K1NG…
“I’ll say it now, and i’ll say it again.
Quik is my favorite hip hop artist. Period.”
ditto.
@ Y
U buggin. But it is his best.

Kanye better than Quik in everything?
Laughable, at best. Quik’s ear for music > ‘Ye’s existence.
It’s unreal how ignorant East Coast cats are about Quik’s genius. I’ve spent a good portion of the last few months putting all these dudes up on Quik’s discography.
Now that the output is almost equal, I think I’d rate Quik ahead of Kanye. This 808 shit ain’t gonna help. That’s for sure.
It’s unreal how ignorant East Coast cats are about Quik’s genius.
===================================
True, to a point. Dude just hasn’t done a whole lot of classic, genre bending material. I got into Quik as a result of joints he did for Shaq & Tony! Toni! Tone!. In fact, the first time I really took notice of Quik on a track was “Dollars & Sense” on the “Murder Was The Case” soundtrack. Dude is a regional phenom & casual listeners of hip-hop prolly have no idea who he is. That being said, I still appreciate his body of work & his skills as a musician. Fact is, Quik kinda settled on being a West Coast artist by sticking with the “G-Funk” even though he’s obviously talented to broaden his scope like he tried to do with his last 3 projects (The Fixxers included). How many classic records does Quik have? I mean, records that transcend coast & genre. big, radio records, how many does Quik have for him to be considered a “Legend”?
*obviously talented enough to broaden his scope
be safe out there, Canseco
They both had their runs, Quik’s just ended way before ‘Ye’s, and this is coming from a West Coast cat.
They both on some other shit right now…I’m listening to “Talk About Our Love” by Brandy, which ‘Ye produced >>> this new stuff Yeezy is on
Unless they both get a second wind, their best years are behind them
Dang, both versions of “Spur Of The Moment” knock
Well Damn, someone recognizes the same thing as I do on the coast…
U know what the problem is tho… Laziness & Poor Business skills
And that sums it up…
Oh yeah and Quik did “Justify My Thug” for Jigga –
You’ll 4get that because Quik never mentions it, he’d rather talk about other lackluster productions and artists that he’s dealing with…
We Gotta Do Better Out West… straight up!
@Clean LaTEEFuh
“Unless they both get a second wind, their best years are behind them”
Your post is comical (sorry but true).
Both of their best years are behind them?
You must be smoking (with all due respect).
I don’t think anyone would agree with that quote of yours above. One or the other (IMO – both) still have much left in them.
P.S.
We need to treat Hip-Hop producers the same as rock/pop/country producers and relate them to a fine wine.
It (wine) always improves with age.
Interesting, this discussion – two of the best producers on the mic (forget about Diamond D & Evidence). I could play songs from both of their catalogs all night…you could tell both of these cats have a passion for their craft…they understand the sonics behind good records that move people
I can’t front…I like “808′s & Heartbreak” (what I’ve heard) better than 85% of “Graduation”. “Graduation” lacked the soul of “College Dropout” & “Late Registration”. It seemed like a pop-centric device with the specific goal of cashing in. “808′s…” isn’t anything like his 1st two albums but it’s a return to the Kanye who stood for creativity & progression, the Kanye who’s passion was often mistaken for arrogance & that I can respect. The same pain I heard on “Put On” is what I hear when I listen to these new joints. “Say You Will” had me bawlin like a pre-schooler lol.
P.S. The joint ‘Ye did on Mariah’s “Mimi” album was my ish! Dude has R&B chops, I wonder why he doesn’t do more R&B production. Same with Quik.
@ Y: I’m speaking from a historical perspective…some of my favorite producers of all time – Dre, Primo, RZA, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, The Neptunes…hot then, not now, but forever classic…time has shown that everybody gets their time, but who knows? Maybe Quik & ‘Ye can buck that trend
I think Quik has it harder being that he isn’t a very good MC & he has a West Coast sound that limits him. And no one named any of his “Big” records cause he really doesn’t have any. He surrounded himself with rapper’s that were either subpar or didn’t put music as a #1 priority. If he would’ve had one real lyricist/MC in his crew early on, like Dre had Snoop, we might be speaking about him in a whole nother light.
@Clean LaTEEFuh
Got it.
Understood.
@ Canseco…i’ll keep you and your family in my prayers. Be safe big homie.
Quik is my idol. Dude is incredible.
I just started getting into Quik. His music is great. Very original to say the least. Kurupt…not so much.
wow…everyone’s got a fucking opinion about me and what i do. as long as people like Snoop, Dre & Jay dig my work, im good. the good thing about me & Kurupt’s new work is that it doesnt sound like the regular boring blunts and guns shit so common in west coast music. and contrary to popular belief, this cd is full of live instruments, and witty lyricism. Snoop blessed it and we knocked it out in record time.
and as far as the fixxers “debacle” the editor spoke of, i had no control of what them niggaz did with the music after me and amg were done. WE ONLY HAD A SINGLES DEAL AT INTERSCOPE! anything else wouldve been gravy for amg more than me. ive always had a healthy working relationship with the people at interscope since the 2pac posthumous releases, and i wanted amg to enloy some of that success.
so seriously folkes…how can i be wasting away ? that sounds like a death sentence scenario..ya dig? i dont say mean things about people, but i cant control what people say about me. have a ball with that propaeganda cause its when you all stop talking (good or bad shit) that i will be a lil worried. so until then Merry Christmas and have a not-so-bitter New Year ! Love,Quiksta
BTW: we have a song on our new cd called “PhuckYall!” because we knew the hate was comin. poor business and lasiness ?
75,000,000 records sold and counting since 1991 (RIAA Certification) for whoever this tony blair dude is. get your money up guy while im watching the city move below me from my whitestone patio deck. real ball kids….no filler.
