“I’m presently thinking about the future.”
I have the utmost respect for Gotty™ and his taste in music even though at times I have fundamental disagreements with his choices. Case in point.
There’s a balance to be stricken between being a hustler and being an artist. In very main ways, the truth behind the old adage about money being the root of all evil is indeed confirmed because the pursuit of monetary gains is artistic poison, if ever such a thing existed.
A brief survey of the women amongst whom I dwell revealed that the claim that this man makes music for the “ladies” is either very wrong, or my women friends are not “ladies.” To avoid dissing and pissing off his audience or fanbase, I shall quickly skip over to the part where clearly Young Algernod Lanier makes music for the money. It is definitely notable and admirable that he should succeed as he does this, and by all means, feed your kids when you get the chance. However, to what detriment?
The fact that this man is the current definition of success will quite certainly mold a new generation of Stans, just like Wayne had done before him. Much as I dislike Weezy, Plies isn’t even a candle in his sunshine, and both of them couldn’t hold a torch to some of the great brilliance before them. (Disclaimer: This is a personal opinion so don’t bark blindly and miss seeing the point.)
I would retract that statement, if only for the fact that I’m not educated on matters to do with Plies. He’s obviously smart (relatively), however, I am yet to see a glimmer of skill in the man beyond crafting songs I imagine would play over the sound system at ghetto orgies and in strip clubs that rely on cross-ventilation as they have no air-conditioning…and occasionally, when you need a good example of an abused sample.
If Vibe is right, the future, ladies and gentlemen, will be very conflicting; good minds being traded in for good money, and good words being overshadowed by bad messages and hidden behind bad actions…that never really happened.
Regardless of this, it’s never been a question that skill does not always translate into prosperity, however, should prosperity redefine the standard of skill?
Should the bar be adjusted to the level of whomsoever is currently piling the most Hip-Hop cash or should we (and by ‘we’, I mean ‘Vibe‘) credit someone with being the future of Hip-Hop solely based on this premise?
Methinks not, but feel free to sound off as I draft complaint letters to a certain magazine’s editor-in-chief.

this should be interesting
This dude is a success in a market that’s geared toward ringtones. “Definition Of Real” sold fewer copies than his 1st LP & I expect the sales to continue to slide downward. He’s worked hard enough to avoid one hit wonder status (barely) but that doesn’t mean a long & fruitful career is in his future. And I like Plies, I just think his tendency to cater to the females is putting a ceiling on the success he can achieve. “The Real Testament” was a good street album with a few pop/crossover moments. Plies needs to go back to spitting the “Real” & leave the “Buss It Babies” to the LL’s of the rap world.
*hums “Goons Lurkin” quietly to himself w/fingers plugged his ears to ignore Contra* lol
Don’t be actin all sanctified b/c you went to church this morn & sat w/the Jr. Deacons aggin!
“Car Full Of Choppers And Everbody Quiet,A Car Full of Goons And Everybody Cerified…”
*continues humming*
nah, Plies has kinda worn out his welcome w/me. I’m still bumpin his GG though. fuckallthat.
okay…
as far as long-term career strategy goes…
might it be more conducive to one’s career by “covering more ground”, so to speak, by appealing to the masses, which might allow a level of success to be attained, lay down a foundation and garner a fanbase, then do music that’s uncompromising creatively?
that’s assuming that he does have a desire to make music purely for arts’ sake and not with any fiscal aspirations, which is what you’re implying, Contra
I must admit. That bussit baby is a guilty pleasure of mine.
what was the song at the end of this week’s entourage? anyone know? chorus kept saying “it’s a beautiful night.”
Still laughing at the fact Contra™ wrote a piece on Plie(r)s….
Ha-ha…Hee-hee..Ho-ho…
Dammit that’s just weird.
^ LOL. Son, I’ve been trying really hard not to say anything about dude. I have a really long shitlist of emcees I’d spazz out on at a moment’s notice
here we go again… if success is money.. that means that Solider boy is G.O.A.T.. i mean solider boy prolly made more dough in one year than Q-tip in his career.. and thats bullshit if you ask me.. money should not define who is a great rapper or not.. I think we all know where great hip hop music comes from.. as for me.. im old school.. and I need beats, with lyrics that tell a story or have meaning… I think a new conscious rap will be emergin in the weeks to come due to Obama and the whole change concept. only the true will survive… I can see solider boy fading away.. dude did get his dough on.. hope fully he does something positive with all the money other than give it to some heads on the street,,, by the way this song sucks.. is that what you call creativity?… I think not.

Plies has no aspirations of being an “MC”. He, like most of the cats in the game these days, is in it for the buck. The problem I have with him is he’s beginning to box his self in as an artist, not that he had much room to grow, but who knows?
Look at Tip. T.I. started out in the trap (although he is easily more talented than Plies), but he grew as a lyricist & thematically, his songs managed to transcend the genre. I see no such growth from Plies, which leads me to believe he’s gonna milk the whole “Goon Casanova” schtick untill it runs it’s course & he winds up in the back of a XXL on a milk carton.
People equate success with money, but it’s really all about how you define success. And I think we know how Algernod defines his success. He’s wearing it on his neck & wrist.
“Niggas walkin’ around with Pharrell jewelry & they ain’t got Pharrell money (c) Hell Rell
Bang Bang.
I wouldn’t advise dude to make music for Arts sake. I said he was smart, not talented. lol
My perfect example of what he could do is what i like to call the new ATL model: Jeezy, T.I., Luda.
Jeezy decided to be more purposeful and socially aware. T.I. got more personal and
police influencedconsequence conscious. And Luda just matured.Plies could do either one. And either would do more for his career monetarily, lengthwise, or even appealwise than continuing with the same old regurgitated cow cud rap.
i mean, overall, Vibe is wack anyway.
they’ve got good writers who produce good articles, but my assumption is that their readership is a bunch of shallow superficial high-sidin’ overly ambitious card-carryin’ Greek fraternity/sorority wanna-be socialites who wanna be in with the latest flavors and rely upon the sub-cultural pundits at said magazine to think for them.
Only an idiot would look at a cover blurb like that and blindly agree that Plies is the future of rap
That is so discrediting to people like Blu, Black Milk, and, dare I say it -Charles Hamilton…people who don’t necessarily look at music as a jumpoff into other forms of media…there’s tons of other cats who put their heart and soul into this rap shit without aspirations of airing out their biz on a reality show or getting corporate endorsements
^Teef, people dont read anymore. Anybody that does, is either on TSS, HHIR or…maybe like 2 other blogs. And those people already have formed opinions. But the majority of dumbasses out there, all due respect, are batshit stupid. Double digit IQ Eli Porter ass Vibe Magazine subscribing cover glancing mo fo’s that go around hopping on whoever’s sac is on the new cover.
“My perfect example of what he could do is what i like to call the new ATL model: Jeezy, T.I., Luda.”
^ that Holy Trinity of ATL artists (not taking anything anyway from ‘Kast, cuz they’re in a totally different stratosphere) IS a good example for others to follow as far as structuring a career for longevity – provided that the music being created isn’t repetitive, regurgitated and monotonous.
so instead of putting his face on the cover and declaring him the future, they should have….
anyways, who could blame Plies for wanting to cake off of a good name that he built slangin’ radio raps? The music industry isn’t lucrative anymore (duh), so it only makes sense for a businessman to diversify his hustle, right?
Nowadays you can’t rely upon talent alone
good luck to him…
so instead of putting his face on the cover and declaring him the future, they should have….
==================================
Replaced him with Soulja Boy?
I mean, I recognize it’s all about selling magazines & dude does have a fan base, cause somebody is coppin his albums & somebody is paying to see his shows. I just wish more rappers took pride in their craft & tried to actually improve as an artist from album to album. I guess that’ll happen the day the consumers start to demand it.
funny how they say he’s the future of rap…
I bet if you let him tell it, he’ll be quick to say there ain’t no future in rap
dudes without any substantive content in their albums or a significant catalog of hits to tour with don’t have a future in the music business
he’s not the future of rap
that’s why folk like him pursue ventures outside of music, cuz their talent is limited…
“Future Of Rap” declarations sell magazines & spark conversation.
Like Teefus said…
“Only an idiot would look at a cover blurb like that and blindly agree that Plies is the future of rap.”
And Al ain’t even caking like that to be considered in a convo about Hip-Hop’s top earners. Dude has one gold album. I’ve gotta read the piece before I judge it, but it sounds like Vibe is talkin’ out their ass.
^ Ace Ventura style, lol
Plie’s speaks on the social signifigance of hit eye opening single, “Pants Hang Low”…
“For me, being where I’m from, understanding the legal system and the culture I’m a part of, I felt it was a statement record, we got a lot of cats…they had a situation in Riviera Beach, Florida, not too far from my hometown. It was a group of guys that were harassed and arrested and incarcerated for a fashion statement. I’mma always stand in the forefront and do what I feel is right. The record had a lot of sentimental value to it.”
There goes Plies again, fighting for social change.
Amp you are right; the only reason Vibe did this was to sell magazines.
What a rebel.
Viva la revolucion de saggy pants.
see, if an artist is speaking out about something, then I’m all about it, especially of there’s some artistic merit to it…
matter of fact, if I remember correctly, it was around the time when his song “100 Years” had a buzz and I first discovered TSS and he was getting mentioned here….
I was feelin’ the song and the video…since then, I’ve liked a few of the songs he’s done, so I know he’s got it in him (II)…the question is, when does the well run dry?
i DO hope he has a future in this rap shit where he can contribute and be a conduit for upliftment

I fux with this.
People still read hiphop magazines??? That’s soooooo 90′s!!! The future of rap? Who cares! I doubt even some of the underground names that we tout as being “that next cat” have marginally any staying power over 2 years. Hiphop has changed a lot y’all; being a mainstay is damn near impossible in the current climate.
@TC
Redman KILLED his spot on the Death of Adam. Had me cracking up hoard.
What kills me about that cover photo is that Plies actually had the audacity to put the word “GOON” in the face of his watch!!! Ninjaz need to chill out with the ostentatious jewelz for real. I mean, I like jewellery from a design standpoint but there is a fine line between cool and corny.
Yo, that 88 Keys joint is dope! Funny too.
@ Flea
Come on. that shit is funny
C/S Vibe is WACK!!!
Of course money is how success is defined in hip-hop; “how much ish you got” is the subject of about every other song. Art critics no longer pay attention to hip hop because its not avant-garde, its no longer negros doing something strange and foreign, hip-hop is ever-present…So if there is no longer critical acclaim for hip-hop how else will success be defined?
I’m probably the only negro hailing from the state of FL who can’t stand this ninja! I remember before he got all popular back in the day and he was trying to move his lil’ weak ass mixtapes cats wasn’t checkin’ for him. Fast foward three years later and every trunk is rattling this lame-o’s music. I know cats from Ft.Meyers (his home city) who constantly tell me stories of how fake this cat is…
i always find it ironic how women love this nigga but he be str8 shittin’ on em’ in his songs! Shit reminds me of that Chris Rock bit on misogynistic music “girl he ain’t talking about me!” *cue music* “slap em’ with a dick, slap em’ with a dick! put the dick in their face, a dick in their face…”
it’s also interesting how the moment he steps away from a mic he speaks MAD PROPER..
Plies!!??…really!!??… reallly!!??? no really!!??…
@ Flea
That watch says “COON…”
LOL @ Gaucho
GO COP THAT DEATH OF ADAM!!!!!!
STAY UP STAY UP STAY UP
How is he “the Future of Rap” & he’s older than Method Man & Rick Ross?
This fool is like 34 still callin bitches wet wet he needs to give it up I forgot what TSS dude said that but when they did i was dying
@ CB4: Nah man, Meth is still the oldest, he’s 37. I believe Ross and Plies are both around 32 years of age.
@ OED: HA HA HA!!! You’re bad my ninja!!!
This dude has the worst style in rap. He has no style lol. If Ne yo wasn’t on that song do you think girls would like it. He’s disrespectful towards women and his market is women doesn’t make sense. What would the rap world be without him a less ignorant rapper like we needed another one after Jim Jones and Young Jeezy. Go back and sell drugs your flow is busted baby.
Does anyone have any music by an artist named Shawn Anthony; a lot of his music has been played on Entourage.
this album won’t be gold ?! or this album will be plat.
but if plies does a new GOLD status, he must have a secret affiliation with tha Riaa!..ownahohhshyt!
he’ll be da first and last golden goon.. ouuh golden coon maybe …
i dig plies.
i always thought i’d hate his shit, but i had to listen to DEFINITION OF REAL for a review. surprisingly, i liked it.
joints like “worth goin fed fo,” “somebody loves you” & “one day” are tight. they’re simple & bare bones, but he breaks down the drug game & the streets better than your favorite mega-metaphysical-sooper-lyrical-cerebral emcee. sometimes, when things are kept simple, they touch your soul more ‘cuz it’s straight real, nothing is lost in translation. there’s a sense of honesty. he ain’t trying to be clever to the point where he loses you like some of these wordy-ass niggaz, who come off as smug know-it-alls sometimes.
as in journalism, just because you know every word in the dictionary doesn’t mean you have to use ‘em all. like gotty says, “learn to say more with less.” that’s what plies does.
everybody ain’t got to be super-lyrical… some niggaz will strike a chord on pure emotion. and that makes for good music too. shit, i can’t stand a lot of these eggheads rappin about the size of their cerebral cortex & flying thru space & shit. i think when plies does straight street shit/reality rap, he’s respectable. and his beats are tight.
jeezy got better over time, he has more messages in his music now. maybe plies will grow too.
