Imagine everyone’s surprise when independent powerhouse Koch Records landed one of their biggest hits from an virtually unknown rapper with the name of Unk. With conventional wisdom out the window, Unk kicked off his career forcing half the nation to “Walk It Out” right before he showed them his “2 Step,” earning a spot amongst the newer hitmakers. Looking to prove he’s no fluke with the party favors, Unk’s back with 2econd Season, a lively mashup of crunk, call and response, and crassness which ranks high on ambition, low in terms of ingenuity.
One quality Unk doesn’t lack however, is energy. Cuts like the spirited “In Yo Face” and the bounce-laden “Like Wham” keep the party going while partner DJ Montay supplies the entire album’s animated production. Another plus for the Big Oomp Camp is that they’re amongst the few of keeping the sounds of credible crunk alive with co-signs from Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat on “Wet Wet” and the haunting instigator “Beat Dat Azz” supporting their movement.
Problem with 2econd Season is that it unfolds like an hour long halftime show. Midway through, the sporadic bass and stilted deliveries from Unk and his guest stars start to become damn near exhausting. Sean Kingston’s droopy chorus on “You’re The One” warrants an unneeded lull in momentum while Unk and the Ying Yang Twinz “Sweep The Flo” with unadulterated fuckery. And “Walk It Out’s” first cousin “Show Out” shamelessly revisits the Atlanta’s biggest hit to no avail.
For what would be considered a sophomore slump in most circles, Unk’s 2econd Season is successful in matching the consistency of the previous record, if not surpassing it. With out a doubt, Unk’s got the formula to move the crowd. Too bad it can only be tolerated in small doses.
