Obviously Barack Obama’s election has caused a major paradigm shift in America for the various reasons we’ve all been hit over the head with over the last few days. What people don’t seem to address is how Obama affects another hot topic issue: interracial dating.

The idea of a Black man with a White woman on his arm sometimes raises eyebrows and even pisses some people off. Any Black fella out there who has dated a white girl has probably had to answer a few questions or defend his choice from at least one Black female out there. By the same token, the female has probably had to battle the accusation that she was in it as some sort of exploitative social experiment or to quell some inner desire to “try it out.” As you may recall, the relationship was most famously stigmatized in Yeezy’s “Golddigger,” in which Ye remarks that “when he gets on he’ll leave yo’ ass for a white girl.” Ideas like this have been the basis for the criticism for these interracial relationships. Then there’s the idea that the biracial child will be in an eternal struggle to find his or her identity due to the parents’ own racial identity insecurities.

Now, a product of such a union is the President. Furthermore, Obama’s father wasn’t a full-time part of his household, leaving the son to be raised by his white mother and maternal grandparents. Still, Barack has been able to stay true to his roots, crediting both sides of his family for his success and inspiring Black people across the country. The idea that a biracial child will be inherently “fucked up” doesn’t fly anymore

It’ll be interesting to see what happens now. The most powerful man on the planet is proud of his biracial identity. How will that trickle down to the everyday couple at the mall? His meteoric rise has brought about change and brand new ideas. One can only wonder if Obama’s success will make the whole “Jungle Fever” stereotype a thing of the past as well.
