This album has managed to remain on my playlist for quit some time now; this song in particular.

There are about four different versions of the track, all of which are quite stellar. But Jay’s verse on this joint propelled it into out of the atmosphere. It was pleasantly surprising to see a video for it floating around, because this is a song that needs to be heard.

The tale of success is often an epic and inspirational one; the tale of the successful, however, seldom is. Few times do people take a moment to realize that those we look up to and those we hold to a certain standard are often more afflicted than we are. We spend hours upon hours criticizing their missteps and shortcomings, because we are often so in love with what we see them as that we’d hate to imagine that they are like us, or worse.

On their end, that’s not close to being a fair trade off, and for the most part, they are often one step away from joining Kurt Cobain in the cloudy loft above just to escape the glass box atop the pedestal. More often than not, prodding them to be better, is nudging them to take that step.

This song speaks to that unsung struggle. It speaks to Amy Winehouse’s addictions, it voices Kanye’s cries, and goes further to speak for Rick James, Nikki Six, Shakir Stewart, Johnny J, Pac, Big, shit, probably even John Gotty™, and everybody you look up to as a shooting star in your darkest night sky.

As you wish upon that star, it’s already imploding, exploding, and preparing to crash into a silent nothingness of a grave and forever be lost. Grant it the peace of wishing upon it, and not cursing it to Hell.

“Success…is like suicide. Suicide, it’s a suicide….”
