Generally what you hear from the final product of an album doesn’t represent the entire creation process. Scrapped songs and altered production ironically are the setbacks that constitute forward progress.

Still fresh with the aroma from the 4 Cigs caused by his debut album White Van Music, Jake One caught up with TSS to break down the origins of the album’s bonus track “Hurt U,” which features the efficacious pairing of Pharoahe Monch and Kardinal Offishall.

So this song is really old. It was done for Kardi’s 2nd album on MCA but got shelved when MCA folded right before the record came out. Kardi and Monch killed the raps but the beat just wasn’t doing it for me anymore. I updated it a bit thinking I might put it on White Van Music, but I still didn’t really like it. Seemed like the perfect opportunity for an iTunes bonus track. The best part of the song to me is how they’re actually are rapping together. Not the “I got a hot 16 for you son” style that passes for a collaboration these days. You rarely hear that kind of teamwork anymore. Probably too much work for most.

For more in depth analysis on the collaborations helmed by Jake One, be sure to check out the physical version of White Van Music which is available in stores now courtesty of Rhymesayers Entertainment.
