Well, here’s Asher’s XXL freestyle. It’s self-explanatory like an IKEA manual. He pales in comparison to his classmates. In undergrad we called this “biffing,” i.e. falling flat on your ass or face.
I don’t question whether or not Asher Roth has talent — the dude can rap. But knowing how to rap and needing to be a rapper are two totally different things. He fits neatly into a SubZero refrigerator box I’ve labeled “Too Many Rappers, Not Enough Fans.” (More on that later…)
I don’t know, Benny, we’ll see. I’ll probably be wrong about Asher Roth’s lack of necessity or impact on the game. He’ll probably be wildly successful and I might even own an Asher Roth LP this time net year. But to continue with our XXL Basketball Analogy…
Asher Roth is the white kid who comes to tryouts at the beginning of the season standing 6’1″, and no one knows much about him. Folks in the bleachers start whispering about how small he is, but the conversation usually ends when someone brings up his decent jumper — which looks awfully familiar. Yeah, he puts a couple points up every time but no one comes out against the kid, because he’s not hurting the game. In the crowd, everyone stands with their arms folded, thinking about Marshall. You know, Marshall the 6’10″ white kid who stunned the division for three seasons but didn’t show up this year (something about going through Detox.) Yeah, that Marshall. Marshall who grew up playing street ball. The one whose gully fade-away J had all of us talking. Now we’re stuck with this semi-soft white kid from the burbs and we ain’t wanna say he’s a pussy… but… he’s just not Marshall. After all, you can’t teach height.
Oh, and I heard a rumor in the hallway. Marshall’s coming back to play again. Sooo… who’s this new guy again?

Asher Roth is complete huffery to me. I went to college with his type and unfortunately was loosely acquainted with that type (stoner “hip-hop”/skater white dude from the burbs who wants to rap about fun college stuff and being from the burbs and tries really really hard to be funny and clever lyrically but more often than not comes off corny)…..needless to say, he’s the kind of fella who’s cool to smoke some kill with, in fact, the burb kid usually has some fire that would make even the most accomplished THC-heads raise their eyebrows, but other than being cool to chill and smoke with you don’t really want dude near a mic, but hey all the other suburban white and/or rich kids like him so he keeps on anyway because he’ll have that following, whereas all the city kids are just like “he’s aight.”
And that freestyle was extremely wack and just validated everything I wrote.
Ash will end up as an A&R for a major. Or he be like that Jamie Kennedy guy–one of these semi-talented white boys that’s just obnoxious enough, and has just enough urban flavor and connection to keep getting gigs for no good reason at all. Word to Seth Green and Jay Mohr.

@ Black Canseco: I see your point and agree to a degree BUT, I don’t even think that A) Roth is talented nor B) does he have much “urban” flavor to anyone except rich and/or suburb white folks. Point blank, period. He has little to no appeal to people outside of that demographic, mostly based on the fact not that he’s suburb middle class, but based on the fact that lyrically he’s mediocore and corny.

@ Frank: I’m still not sure about Cudi, he’s energetic, good live show, but I’m not sold on him just yet. Blu and Wale are monsters though would be a nice duo, B.O.B. is nice and Factz is slowly growing on me. The rest of them cats are (thus far) not very impressive to me, but that could always change over time, though I really doubt I’ll ever be feeling Charles Hamilton and Asher Roth. Sometimes first (and 2nd, 3rd, 4th) impressions are hard to break.

Once again it’s looking like the Roth ego has written a solo career check that the Roth talent can’t cash.
So Asher keeps getting compared to Em like they’re in the same lane but the only similarity is that they’re white. I am not going to pretend like race doesn’t matter in rap right now but dudes don’t have the same style, subject matter, or demeanor so I think it’s sloppy that Asher is always discussed in terms of Em.
