A few years ago I considered Sly Boogy one of my favorite rappers.

To me, he was next up. Unsigned Hype. Bound to blow. Whatever.

On top of having the Scott Storch-produced “That’s My Name” in rotation on MTV Jams for hot one, Sly had just dropped the batch of hot rocks known as the The Fifth Letter mixtape. My personally signed copy is still tacked up in my room.

Stan-ness sounds present, I know, but it’s warranted.

This beast from the IE has some of the stupidest wordplay you’ve ever heard. His metaphors are over and over and over the top. And, aside from being able to actually craft some meaningful songs, Sly sews it all together perfectly with his unrelenting flow and born-with-a rap voice. But, like I said, that was two years ago.

Since then, he’s been Swayzed out. Gone. Amber Alert for Boog. Few and far between, tracks seemingly smuggled onto the Net.

That all changed today, though.

I stopped by old faithful, DubCNN, for the West Coast rundown and found some news that made me excited enough to write a post on a Saturday. New Boogie. Three new tracks, all exceeding my forgotten expectations. A new EP, The Beauty Of Death, appropriately coming out on Halloween, with a music video to boot. All of which lead to his first full-length album, dropping in 2000-Nina.

If you can’t tell, I’m hype. You should be too because if you don’t know who Sly Boogy is, pretty soon you will…right alongside everyone else.

I promise, today is the beginning of something serious.
