Most of us can relate to Hip-Hop on some level. If not, then we wouldn’t be here, right? With the trap music/gangsta shit that so much of this genre was built on, I find myself having to relate solely on some metaphorical level. It’s refreshing when a rapper spits a verse that I can relate to 100% and say to myself “yea, I’ve been there.”

I got my tux on
In the city where the people keep Chucks on
And they told me that they don’t see
my name on the list so I’m stuck home
In a brand new suit, my girl look cute,
I done spent my dough renting a brand new coupe
Just trying to splurge, park my shit on the curb
I thought it was A-list, I feel like a nerd
Guess that’s what I get for trying to do what the stars do
So I’ma do me go hit up a bar or two
Fuck drinking champagne,
give me Jack D. on the rocks, DJ spinning doing his damn thang,
playin some dope shit nobody has heard about
No flyers for the party, strictly on word of mouth
And wouldn’t ya know, that the place that I ain’t wanna go
is the same place they got love for Joe, so c’mon party with me.

– Joe Scudda from Statik Selektah’s “On The Marquee” off Statik Selektah’s Stick 2 The Script

Joe Scudda paints a picture of those magical nights when you end up having a good ass time that you never planned on. Cuz lawd knows I’ve been denied access to many a door due to over-crowding or premature post-rat-a-tat-tat shutdowns. Of course, instead of the bar, I end up going to Club Waffle House and having an unexpectedly damn good time. These are always the nights that garner the best memories. Joe sets the stage for such an occasion and accurately reenacts the events with pitch-perfect precision.

Is it the weekend yet?
