“In My Draws” - Review Of Devin The Dude’s Landing Gear

If you are familiar with Devin The Dude as a rapper, then you already know what topics his album will touch on before you even push play. Mr. Copeland is a connoisseur when it comes to marijuana, escapades with women and sharing the details is his area of expertise. His first album since his departure from Rap-A-Lot Records, Landing Gear, doesn’t stray far away from his formula. At twelve songs deep, he leaves little room for error with the run-time clocking in at less than fifty minutes.
One of Devin’s qualities that make him such an interesting MC is his sing-song style and matter-of-fact humor that for the most part, gives him the ability to never run his redundant concepts into the ground. The laid back, bass heavy song “In My Draws” is vintage Devin; complete with tales of trying to find a lady for the night, being stalled by the police, and not trusting the advances of a woman in fear of bad intentions. “I Can’t Make It Home” doubles as the first single as well as the most accessible track of the whole project. Devin revisits his distrust in the police as he recounts being pulled over while D.W.B. and arrested for a D.U.I.
Other notables include the Spanglish ode-to-booty “El Grande Nalgas” and the moderately uplifting song “Yo Mind,” where he warns those who are starting to slip, that they need to get back on their feet. And of course the self-reflective, loner anthem “I Need A Song.”
Unfortunately, with such a short track list, stale songs like “Me, You” and “Stray” stick out like Devin in a Truth commercial. The remainder of the tracks fall somewhere in the middle of the road. That doesn’t result in a failure to launch but not exactly a perfect landing either.

I thought Waiting to Inhale was better, and I agree it could have been longer, but I probably would have given it a 3.5. Thinkin Boutchu is my ish tho…
This album has a couple of joints that I like, but as a whole it really didn’t impress me. Devin didn’t really put his foot into this one.
This album is a personal 4/5 for me, with “Your Kinda Love” being a definite stand out track on the album.
when da snoop/devin album
or maybe an other one with the dude.

I wanna know what happen to that track with Spice-1.
The track with spice 1..i haven’t heard yet..but that and the track posted up here, Highway ft Smoke Dza woulda definitely bumped this album up a bit.
^ yea i been fiendin for that spice 1 track since I heard the clip of it on one of those videos devin put up…
Can someone up Mickey Factz’s Leak Vol. 2? No links anywhere work anymore…would be really appreciated…Thanks in advance…
i don’t know… imho, this album didn’t sound nearly as contrived as Waiting to Inhale. the productions sounded much more refined on this album and devin’s use of humor didn’t push into silliness like some of his previous albums have. it seemed as if devin was much more comfortable flowing over the lush backdrops of his production and while the album was a bit short, it seemed more akin to his first LP than any of his former attempts. granted, some of the tracks could have used a bit more development i.e. “Me, you” and “I Need a Song” but both tracks are still approachable and haven’t driven me to the FF button on every rotation. as far as the last track goes, it was definitely not what i was expecting but in a good way. the spliff had become a roach by the time the beat dropped and i was expecting to hear another “Georgy” based upon the beat and the track title. when i heard the lyrics, i almost choked on the inhale and spit the joint across the car. this album was short on content but didn’t have nearly as much fluff as Waiting.
when ya’ll finish doing what ya’ll doin; holla at me, i’ll be in the bathroom boo-booin’.
Devin is in his lane and he watchin those “yellow lines” Devin is an artist that can MAKE a song or song’s content work for him. I fukz wit this one and I think “STRAY” is a dope ass song.
Man… to be honest,…. the CD was fulfilling enough, left me wanting more. I don’t change any songs cuz I wanna hear it in a row. The first time I put it in, I was in the car and I was fucked up and needed a good song to get me going. All i heard was a slow ballad like beat that took all my attention with it and the words …I need a song… that i can sang… when I’m alone…. wit my smoke and my drank…. Every verse was is ON Point with my life and I was feeling it that i played it again and every song had it like that….. Lovin’ It Devin….. You sing youre chorus’s and rap yo verses… That what’s up!
