A few weeks ago, TC wrote about the decline of the R&B album. He was right, vocoders, the desire to become singing rappers and overly formulaic snoozefests that somehow pass for albums have dominated the market. Jazmine Sullivan has come out of nowhere to bring us back to the golden age. Her new album, Fearless, powered by production from Missy Elliott and Salaam Remi, is an adamant declaration of a new powerhouse on the R&B scene.
Jazmine’s sound has immediately garnered comparisons to Lauryn Hill due to her full voice and willingness to attack each note as if it were the only thing between her and Heaven’s gates. Sullivan does not coast through a single moment. She exhausts every breath in order to create beautiful and at times heart-wrenching songs. I’m more of a minimalist when it comes to R&B production. This allows singers to showcase their skill. Sullivan’s “Lions, Tigers & Bears” and “My Foolish Heart” are light on production but heavy on boisterous sound. “After The Hurricane” is one-woman throwback to SWV’s classic songs while “One Night Stand” is modern day doo wop.
There are no rappers on the album. No boom baps and DJ scratches. Just melodies and instrumentation. This is rhythm and blues at its finest.
Here’s a sample of some of my favorite songs from the album. If you like it, go cop it. As much as Hip-Hop needs you to buy quality albums, R&B may be in even more desperate straits.
And we need more Jazmine Sullivan’s.

just off the strenf of the co-sign, I’mma give her LP a lissen. and if I like it….dayum….I’mma hafta go cop it. fack. These ain’t times for frivolous spending, but I’ve been buying shit I like and off of suggestions/(pre)views too, and I like the feeling of NOT stealing, lol
& STILL LOL @ New England
^ when I said “stealing” I actually meant previewing a CD via download, and not deleting the mp3′s occupying my hard drive, gathering e-dust, lol
I steal all the time.
It’s okay.
We broke. It’s best to steal before copping.
That said, I’m sitting here w/four albums, about to purchase them, after stealing them first.
Gotta redeem some of these BB Reward Points so I figure why not.
Know anything about Sa-Ra Second Time Around? I feel like I should obtain all the Sa-Ra I can before their physical mat’l becomes completely obsolete.
I need some suggested reading.
Feel free to suggest.
^ Reward Zone! lol
only Sa-Ra CD I copped was the one they dropped last year…what was it called? “The Hollywood Recordings” or some shit like that? I jammed to it for a minute. I gotta whip it out again, pause.
but yo, found this new website courtesy of dallaspenn: http://youknowyoudeadazzwrong.com/
^ good for guaranteed laughs
last significant/substantive book I read was “The Autobiography Of Malcolm X” in the ’90s…lol
“Bomb The Suburbs” by William “Upski” Wimsatt
1) slept-on
2) prototype for hip-hop “snark”
3) encourages readers to get out and make a difference instead of observing, i.e. “…if you’re not part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem”
^that shit is funny as hell
That “Butta Creme” video…saints alive!

I need Sa-Ra’s “Cosmic Fuzz” & “Cosmic Dust”. Been looking for both of em for months. And a strong co-sign on Jazmine. One part Lauryn Hill & one part Alicia Keys = the next big thing. “Fearless” is so soul driven, no gimmicks. Ms. Sullivan is an artist who should be here for a while. My girl hates when her video comes on cause I’ve openly declared my love for her awhile ago lol.
These joints aren’t on the album but they shoulda been…
Smile- http://www.zshare.net/audio/204478220e6fc0e0/
Round Midnight- http://www.zshare.net/audio/204479235650d88a/
Break My Little Heart- http://www.zshare.net/audio/20447610a096fa5b/
I didn’t like Fearless too much.
Her voice is strong, but she didn’t seem to formuate a distinct sound for her album. Her single sounds nothing like the rest of the album & the rest sounded more reserved compared to it. Almost like she was holding back imo.
I’ll dig around & find those two.
Uhhh…Malcolm X? What is this, 10th grade lol?
ay…one of Ric Flair’s robes got donated to the Smithsonian. That’s ill.
anyway…last book I got into was Dyson’s book about Bill Cosby.
What is this, 10th grade lol
^ for me? basically. i haven’t progressed much since then
Ghost should cop one of Ric’s robes and rock that shit.
that would only be right
^My favorite rapper rockin a Ric Flair robe? that’d change my life somehow
Salaam Remi is that dude!!
As for good reads…the last book I finished was Monster: Autobiography of an LA Gang Member. My brother pledged Alpha last year & Monster was required reading & we went to Barnes & Noble to pick it up. When he came home last week, I saw the book on his bed & since he said he was finished with it, I snatched it up & read it straight thru. I usually read alot of non-fiction, mostly about true crime & mafia life. The last book I actually purchased was Bully by Jim Schutze.
here’s a book so fucking appropriate for the times:
“Behold A Pale Horse”
whatever you do, don’t Google “New World Order” & “Barack Obama”
don’t do it.
lol
@ Gotty
I know its a lil out of date but tis the season so check out “How to Get stupid White Men Out of Office: The Anti-Politics, Un-Boring Guide to Power”
LOL @ David D “…that’d change my life somehow”
I totally agree…this R&B rebound began wit “Teenage Love Affair,” “Customer,” & “Green Light.” Jazmine is keeping foing strong!
man…you dudes can’t help me lol.
I read Behold…& Monster like 10 yrs ago (even though I revisit Monster every few years).
From The Browder Files > BAPH
I got Hollywood Recordings on the humbug one day.
2 post same day, what TC must be off…
But I’ve been a Jazmine supporter for months, girl can sang but those producers didn’t do her justice. She has mad material out that I felt they could have chosen and would have made for a decent album. I hope she’s around for a while, I’ve copped the album as I said I would and even gave a copy away-
Amp- on the money definitely should have been on the album
Gotty, I recommend a few books to keep your interest:
The Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius (Dave Eggers)
Any book by Chuck Palahnuik
A Team of Rivals (Doris Kearns goodwin)
Any book by Chuck Palahnuik
—————————————–
Fight Club dude? Hmm…aight.
I went out & copped “Fight Club” off the strength of the flick but I always make it to the 2nd chapter & then I lose interest. Guess I need to finish it.
Here’s Jazmine’s version of Andre 3000′s “Prototype”…
http://www.zshare.net/audio/204532004cc67bf5/
Oh yeah, she did the do on “Prototype” but 3K created a song so beautiful that most covers…they’re bound to be good if the artist can sing.
^ Yeah, I was piecin it out, but that’s all of em lol. I’m looking for an MP3 of her version of Christina Milian’s “Say I”.
Yo, y’all needa write up on my man Drake.
Gotty read:
Choke by Chuck Palahnuik
Manhattan Loverboy or Chineese Takeout by Arthur Nerisan
Mr. Vertigo by Paul Auster
Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan
These have been som of my favorite reads over the last 2 or 3 years also
The Land of Laughs by Johnathan Carroll to give you that uneasy feeling bluring the lines between fiction and reality.
Yo, y’all needa write up on my man Drake
=================================
I read somewhere Drake was just in the stu with Jay-Z. With the hurtin dude is about to put on the industry, I figure you’ll see something on him sooner than later. Speaking of which…
New Drake!
Sooner Than Later
ht tp://www.zshare.net/audio/20475977827219e2/
He raps, He sings, He even cuts julianne fries!
Can you say “next up’?
ay, G I can put you on some graphic novels!
We’ve already talked about Drake. If you don’t know him after all this time & work…well…get familiar before it’s too late.
graphic novels? wtf is that, anime?
Graphic novels are the shit!! My top 3 picks for the uninitiated…
Watchmen by Alan Moore
Groundbreaking graphic novel. A great read & after you see the movie (if it ever gets released) you can tell your peeps “the flick was decent, but I read the graphic novel & it was 10x better” & not be lying lol.
The Ultimates Vol. 1 & 2 by Mark Millar
Takes The Avengers & puts them in a modern setting. Classic heroes re-envisioned for a post 9/11 world. Action packed, the Ultimates reads like a motion picture.
The Punisher Max series by Garth Ennis
Don’t be fooled by the movie of the same name. This is the real Punisher, in all his cussin, mafioso killin glory. Authentic street stories with a dark edge.
P.S. Anything by Warren Ellis. Dude is one of the best writers out there. High concepts that are always rooted in the everyday norm.
^ 1. Bendis’ five year run on Daredevil
2. Planetary
3. Watchmen
^ Why stop at Bendis’ run? Brubaker doesn’t miss a beat.
yea, his first arc was right on point, but it definitely trailed off after the whole jail thing. But yea, I think that Bendis run was the best thing I’ve read. I was dying for the next issue every month
Bendis is good in moderation. Secret Invasion is a mess. Captain America by Brubaker is the only Marvel title I collect & it might be the best book coming outta there. And Planetary is sooo slept on. One of the best things Ellis has ever written.
reads:
anything by Jawanza Kunjufu, the list is long, the topics only somewhat varied. He’s a man that really could cause a lot of change if more people paid attention.
that new Tim Wise, Speaking Treason Fluently looks promising. I haven’t read it yet, but I’d give anything he drops a go if time allowed.
Miles Marshall Lewis, Scars of the Soul Are Why Kids Wear Bandages When They Don’t Have Bruises. I can’t recommend a book more than this one.
I simply do not read enough…not true, I read hundreds of “essays” penned by the future every week. To be truthful, make sure you’re enjoying life now, the future can look oh so bleak (sometimes).
Yea, I’m sleepin on that Cap. I’ll prolly get em when they get collected. Really, nothing is doing it for me right now, I’m getting that Secret Invasion cuz I’m already invested in it. Bendis does better with gritty, underground shit like Daredevil or Powers. Planetary just comes out once ever 2 years, otherwise it’d be up there with the greats. And I’m kinda on Morrison’s Batman, but it’s alittle crazy . But I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on the strength of his X-Men a few years ago
That Dead azz wrong site… had me dying… that’s for that I needed that laff, consider it bookmarked…
Jazmine’s Fearless is good but it can’t compare to Tweets Southern Hummingbird
Thanks Chief for Heav D joint… its def worth the retail pick up in Dec…
Gotty what’s motherfatherin good?
Hi P & TC.
Seems like Marvel & DC are stuck on repeat, one big event after the other. I only pick up Cap cause it kinda takes place outside the normal Marvel universe.
Glad to know I’m not the only comic “geek” around this mugg lol.
i’m with you too amp. watchmen changed my fucking world back in the day. shit was too bananas. i pray that the movie will do it justice.
as for jazmine’s album…i really, really dig it. that girl can sing and she’s here next week at the HOB. i might have to cop that ticket for $25 even though i’m too damn old to stand for an entire concert.
reading recommendations:
Secret Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
Killing Johnny Fry by Walter Mosley
Man in the Basement by Walter Mosley
A Simple Plan by Scott Smith
i’m a sci-fi head myself, but those right there are good.
known world by edward p. jones. well worth it.
