Words By Darius Sinclair™
For the past few years, VH1 has tried to expand its demographic to reach the younger generation with their ensemble of bizarre reality shows and particularly, their tragically unrecognized Hip-Hop Honors. This year, they plan on adding two special Hip-Hop themed broadcasts to air week before this year’s Honors: 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs and VH1 Rock Doc: NWA: The World’s Most Dangerous Group.
The top 100 list should be interesting considering the channel it’s being aired on, but wouldn’t put Mundy to shame. Unlike MTV, this channel doesn’t look to flash as they generally keep the origins intact and represent the real. So expect Big Daddy Kane, Run-D.M.C. and Public Enemy in the midst of the list a lot. They’ll also show archive performances of Outkast, Eminem, Grandmaster Flash, among others. My picks are at the top of the list, Jay-Z’s “U Don’t Know” and Outkast’s “Liberation.”
The NWA show is a documentary that they’ve done already on MTV as well as BET, and I think even SpikeTV. Expect interviews from the members of the group, Eazy-E’s widow and narration from Chris Rock (which I thought was odd considering his pissing on them in CB4). Nothing brand-new, but definitely something you should catch if you don’t know about the rise and subsequent fall of self-proclaimed “world’s most dangerous group.”

Damn, West Coast cats REALLY embraced the Jheri curl, huh?
I think Egyptian Lover still rocks his Jheri.
My boss just came up from behind me and saw that pic, and said, “Man! Brothers With Additudes! I used to love that band.”
He’s a brother from Canada. haha.
@ Darius Sinclair ™
“Brothers With Attitudes”
thats’ PC for the owrkplace I take it, or was he being serious?
@DS – Tell your boss he’s smart to say it that way!!! But also tell him that saying “NWA” is acceptable also.
OH – and you know that Ice Cubes arm was greaaaaasssssyyyyyy as hell!!!! lol
Yo, I remember in the 6th grade, there were these twin girls in class, they both had the Jheri curl, and one day there was one of those things were people had to stand in front of the class, and they both stood against the blackboard, and the Jheri curl juice circles never completely came off the board.
I started to wonder did VH1 get better, or did I just turn 30.
Jazz One, you turned 30 homie. Sorry. Don’t feel bad.
My boss said he doesn’t like that word. I told him Aggins with Additudes is acceptable too. He laughed.
VH1 is more hiphop than BET…
I think Egyptian Lover still rocks his Jheri.
==================================
I hope that shit ain’t still swooped over his eye.
BTW – I’m checkin Cube at the HOB in Cleveland sunday. 25 fuckin years later and he’s still relivant. Cube for G.O.A.T 2012 (starts campaign).
Ain’t saying Nigger in Canada a hate crime?
hip hop honers is less about attracting young viewers and more about the 1st-3rd gen of hiphop becoming VH1 age.
VH1 used to be old people music. now, it’s just music,
*cues up Back In The day
I always liked Ren more b/c he didn’t eff w/ no curl.
NWA became “CB4-esque” when when they went to visit the prez @ the white house.
the prez = gangster
going to meet the prez = not gangsta
The Death Row collective was on it’s way prior to Pac’s death, but really, there hasn’t been a west coast group since to even come close to these dudes.
(tho’ early Cypress Hill was some ill sh*t)
When you think of all the music Dre’s put down (been CREDITED w/putting down), why doesn’t this dude have like a statue in Compton or some sh*t?
VH1 is more Hip-Hop than BET or MTV. But in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t even matter because they’re all viacom. The illusion of choice strikes again
VH1 Soul be playin some aiight joints…Better than BET or MTV any day.
