Nice week to be considered old school I guess. First PE gets crowned #1 by VH-1 and now the Kings from Queens stand a good chance @ making it into the Rock Hall Of Fame.
“Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five opened the door for rap at the Rock Hall as the first hip-hop act to be inducted in 2007. Now, Run-D.M.C., nominated in the first year of its eligibility, has the chance to follow on the strength of rock and rap blends such as the 1986 cover of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” and classics like “It’s Tricky” and “My Adidas.”
“The big thing they did is took hip-hop more into the mainstream,” said Jim Henke, chief curator of the hall of fame and a member of the nominating committee. “They did combine a lot of rock elements. As far as hip-hop groups go, they’re certainly right there at the top.”
Rap is getting older. But what it’s getting more of is respect as a true form of art & influence.
Thanks to those who paved the way.

My Run-DMC story…
I was living in Hollis & Run-DMC were taking promo pictures for “Tougher Than Leather” in front of my building. I still remember being in complete awe watching them casually strike poses in their signature gear, shades, fedoras, & Adidas. After the shoot was done, Run-DMC stuck around to give autographs & bs with the crowd. Just as D gets around to signing my friend Jamel’s Starter cap, Jamel asks “Why don’t you guys wear shoelaces?”. I remember all three of them exchanging looks, then hopping into the van that was waiting for them & dippin off.

I think the song Rock Box is better than the ones they listed. By far…
Run looks like Mike Epps in that pic lol.
@ OED
Remember Missy in 2002? I think that’s as far as it got.
I envy your RUN stories! dammit! I hate being so young!
I don’t really like saying what is and isn’t hip-hop anymore, (and I hope I’m not repeating myself by saying) but Run-DMC’s “Here We Go (Live at the Funhouse) IS hip-hop.
I got good RUN stories, too… but i also got bunions, arthritis and baldspots; not to mention premature hearing loss. So Tone Def, count your blessings and load up on Cool Kids. It’ll even out.

I think the rules are 25 years after your 1st album for eligibility, so if they get inducted, they’ll be first ballot HOF.

Dizastix – Russia thanks you!!! lol
I remember seeing Run -Dmc at the Swatch Summer Concerts at Pier 23 (Chelsea Piers in Ny for you youngsters) with Kurtis Blow + Fearless 4, right before Sucker MC’s dropped. i never relly felt them although the influence was major. The fact that they were the first Hip-Hop as everyman group was
big. No costumes, no choreography, just straight rhymes and beats. Here We Go is dope because it sounded closer to Hip-hop than anything other than Crash Crew or Mike + Dave productions.
I remember seeing them at Latin Quarters in ’86. It was a Celebrity Tuesday and they were rolling in when some dudes tried to snatch their ropes. One cat got close before DMC knocked dude flat. Sad to see dude now with the little timid voice.
