Blasts From The Past At “We The People” Festival 9.27.08
Events By LC Weber on September 30, 2008 at 11:23 amOn Saturday night in downtown L.A. the third annual “We The People” music festival jumped off with a laundry list of talent, from RZA to Primo to Les Claypool. I got there well after dark, hit the beer garden for a couple of tap-water flat Miller Lites and watched the folks who’d been there since 2 p.m. relinquish sanitary practice for a comfortable seat among plastic cups and cigarette butts peppering trampled grass. The problem with being fashionably late is you usually miss all the fun.
Nonetheless, I caught the act I came to see — Murs. The super locked MC blasted his way through a half hour set with high-fructose punch, igniting a bleary-eyed audience into crowd-surfable waves. After covering a sizable chunk of material from his new album, Murs For President, the So Cal native brought out another local, and legend — Kurupt. Folks damn near stomped each other to get a picture of the man as he regaled them with a few bars. And though that moment felt a certain climax of the night, it was during EPMD’s set the true surprise of the night got the blood a-rushing.
As you might imagine, the two long-time cohorts dropped gem after gem on the Hip-Hop heads crowding the stage — ending with “Crossover” and stretching mics over a fan base that knew every word. Then, as if manifested by rap divine right, they called for The Man. The Myth. The Chef… Raekwon.
Rae did little more than spit a few acappella bars of his classics before time ran short, but just his presence felt monumental. And it spurned conversation all the way back to the car in the dank fall night — when, when, WHEN will we actually get Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II? There’s been anticipation swirling around the album for so long it feels like a fairy tale that’s too good to ever be true. To ever really happen.
So long as road-weary, day-drunk festival goers get second and third winds from the sight or mention of Raekwon, he’ll be able to put out OB4CL to serious numbers. But we passed the 13th year mark for the anniversary of the original this August. How many second and third winds does the sequel get before we’re supposed to lose hope?
An album you can be sure to see, Murs For President, drops today. You can buy it at Amazon.com.

Sounds like a live night. Will be copping the Murs and JakeOne in the near future for sure.
@ Flea
That’s the wrong reason to cop anybody’s album
@ TC: Don’t get it twisted my ninja, I’ve bought plenty of MURS’s previous releases. I’m just saying that after seeing him live for the first time it reaffirmed my decision to continue to support his work.
LOL. That’s what’s up.
@ TC aka Senor Buzzkill: That’s not a bad reason to buy an album.
But yeah, Murs has been copped.

props to nahright for letting it go early….
@ Flea — I’ve bought albums on strength of live performance before… ex. Saadiq’s new album… and it was worth every penny. Plus, Murs is great live. I’m with you!
^ true that
support is support.
LOL @ Senor Buzzkill
Let’s all get over it… RAE WILL NEVER DROP O.B.4.C.L. II…. There has to be other reasons as to why this album hasn’t dropped.. I’m looking at the type of grind Ghost has put in the game and i’m like “I know Rae could do something about this”.. Anyway, I guess we’ll be on this discussion board 5 yrs from now wondering “what ever happened to this album”… By the way what’s up with WTK??.. Did his mixtape “Absolute Greatness” drop today????
@ woodywood
Check the Willie The Kid post.
To the rest.
That is a lie. If you were to go to this concert with me a few years back which featured Twista, Luda, and Wyclef and you saw how Wyclef had the superior performance with the freestyles, guitar, and sheer energy despite half the crowd leaving before he hit the stage and him not having the discog to match the other two, and you were to immediately cop The Preacher’s Son, who would be the real loser that night?
A live performance, or a great mixtape has nothing to do with that actual album itself. You should never get burned by an album without hearing it first.
just seen murs live as well a few weeks ago at rock the bells up here in the northwest. will be seeing him again on my b-day next weekend along with kidz in tha hall. great hip hop, my b-day, ill honey’s, good beer…..priceless.

How About Jay-Z & Obama - Live Presidents
yeah, not bad
For the record. The double disc with Dre and Primo is Nas’s idea. lol.
At Rock The Bells, Rae was saying the album is coming so who knows. Meth and Red said they’re gonna do a How High 2 also, but thats just them screaming into a mic so who knows what will happen.
The man, the myth, Raekwon? I love Raekwon as much as the next man but you just made it seem like you saw Jesus. His presence felt monumental….Really? lol. At the Rock the Bells him and Ghost were pretty good live, it started raining during there set which made it even better but come on, kind of feel like you over wrote this but whatever, I bet the show was good.
@ Aron… on account of the crowd’s hype when he took the stage, the fact I’ve never seen him perform live and my fondness of Wu… I didn’t over write it at all. He’s The Man cause he’s one of my favorite MCs and he’s The Myth because folks have been debating OB4CLII for forever and ever, Amen.
I said “felt” monumental, not “was” monumental, fam. Personal opinion.
