… Is the equivalent of a fourth quarter Hail Mary from the opposite endzone with one second left on the clock.
Best Buy is set to acquire online music distributor Napster, the one-time illegal P2P site, in an effort to compete keep up with the growing digital music industy.
With subscription sales flat and iTunes as competition, Napster has struggled to gain consumer traction. Sales of physical CD’s have been tumbling at Best Buy, who recently announced it will shrink CD floor space to make room for new music instrument sections. Together they may be able to find on and offline cross-promotions and other synergies that will differentiate them from online only iTunes, Amazon and Rhapsody.
So Best Buy is considering cutting back on CD’s in the store and they think replacing something that costs at the max $25 with something that runs close to a grand and up?!? Only with thinking like that can teaming up with Napster, which isn’t even a leader in the field when it comes to getting music online be a viable option (TSS > iTunes > Amazon… you get the idea) make sense. This might seem like a sound idea on paper, but it’s ripe with the smell of desperation for two companies who’ve been lapped despite having a head start.
I can see it now:
Customer: Excuse me, Do you have any more Carter III’s in the back?
Best Buy Employee: Sorry sir we’re all out, but we are having a great sale on our brass instruments this week.
Can’t wait to see this exchange in person.
Sidenote: I wonder how the RIAA feels about this since Napster was their first target in their ongoing crusade to cut out music piracy. It’s gotta burn them up a little that Napster’s gone legit. So maybe there is some consolation to this merger…

fuck best buy, they neva have good CDs anyway.
Instrument sales is a good look for Best Buy. I don’t think they’re talking about cellos and oboes, more like keyboards, guitars, amps, maybe MPCs, turntables, and DJ gear, to cut into Guitar Center clientele.
^^^ Yo, one thing I can say about Best Buy is the inventory completely differs depending on where you are. I’ve stopped at some Best Buy stores in the middle of small towns I was driving through and found some underground stuff (ex: DOOM’s Mm…Food before the re-issue) that I thought I would have to cop online.
If I’m buying a physical copy its definitely gonna be from “the Buy” though.
LMAO at the thought of Best Buy selling cornets, flutes and drumsets. Major “L” on the way.
keyboards, guitars, amps, maybe MPCs, turntables, and DJ gear, to cut into Guitar Center clientele.
=======================================
good point, I didn’t look at it like that. but don’t they already carry that stuff? I know they carry keyboards at least.
Yeah, I was just thinking that I went to BB a few weeks ago & they had all types of local & underground stuff. I went bonkers & spent like $90 (had a $40 gift card though).
Anybody else actually starting to get bugged out by the economy?
I think I’ve been ignoring it (or trying to) but w/the weekend & yesterday’s news, it’s all starting to seem to real all of the sudden.
Yeah Gotty, it’s getting really fucked up. We’re gonna have to go through a couple years of real shit regardless of who gets elected. But it’ll start to rebound eventually.
yeah, i was reading the paper this morning & two of the companies that were the talk yesterday were two who survived the first Depression. I think that’s when it sunk in.
I could’ve easily thought “hell their time was up” lol.
I don’t think it’s that simple though.
Richard Wright, keyboardist and a founding member of Pink Floyd, died at his London home on Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 65.
Wright met Floyd members Nick Mason and Roger Waters in college, and joined their band Sigma 6, who would eventually become Pink Floyd. While Wright was an early vocal contributor in Floyd, his role would later morph into keyboardist and experimental instrumentalist, as he learned the synthesizer and Farfisa organ, among other instruments. His writing role also expanded, with his most notable credits coming as co-writer of ‘The Great Gig in the Sky’ and ‘Us and Them’ from 1973′s ‘Dark Side of the Moon.’
Wright left the band following ‘The Wall’ album, but rejoined when guitarist David Gilmour took on the role of chief architect for 1987′s ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason.’ He continued to play with Gilmour on the guitarist’s solo material, including his 2006 album, ‘On an Island.’
Wright sang ‘Comfortably Numb’ with Gilmour at Sessions in 2006. Watch the performance below.
The MTV show which helped launch the careers of BRITNEY SPEARS, *N SYNC and EMINEM is to end after ten years on air.
The music channel’s popular Total Request Live (TRL) show has been axed, with the final show expected to be broadcast in November (08).
Launched in 1998, the show featured hot new music videos, and viewers were introduced to their favourite pop stars through exclusive interviews.
Former TRL host Carson Daly is expected to return for the two-hour special finale.
And stars who shot to fame on the show are sad to see it go – with rapper Eminem saying he’ll miss causing trouble on the beloved series.
He says, “I’m going to miss TRL. Where else will I be able to start feuds, defend my honour vigorously and act like an angry teenager on national TV? Oh wait … The VMAs!”

================================
they do, but the selection is very limited. The thing is, I don’t think anyone right now would think “let me goto Best Buy to buy DJ or recording equipment”, they’d goto Guitar Center.
But I’m assuming if they do go through with this plan, they’ll have a bigger inventory than they do now and they’ll also have it at a lower price than Guitar Center, which could be a good look. I don’t know how big that market is though…But I wouldn’t mind having a cheaper place to buy quality recording equipment
See, we gotta go through the lows in the economy to bounce back up. All those old factories in places like St. Louis haven’t been working for years. Now companies like Volkswagen are thinking about building plants here. Toyota and Honda are increasing their production here. Also, it’s a great time for big investors. People’s savings might be fucked, but millionaires and billionaires are probably being advised to invest here in the near future. It’s just gonna take time.
a few years ago a nerdy best buy employee tried to sign me up for their legit mp3 download service… he said that p2p services were all going out of business… does anyone even still use p2p sites??? i was tempted to school him on the joys of rapidshare…
and as far as the economy goes, i say we don’t need any more government bail outs… the government is only delaying the inevitable… if a company fails, just let it fail… only the strong survive… economic evolution 101…
The eocnomy’s effed up in certain aspects. Banks and lending/investment firms seem to be in trouble the most, but people will take this opportunity to buy low, so everything will eventually bounce back. Don’t think that spending something like $10 billion/month in Iraq doesn’t have an effect. The virtually recession-proof Corvette will see less models and will halt production for 10 days, and the GM plant will layoff 75 employees. My family buss. has had a bad ’08 compared to the excellent ’06 and ’07 we had.
But even through all this, I still see people everywhere buying plasmas, new cars, the malls stay packed and shit like that.
Funny thing is that last week, while the price of a barrel of oil dropped below $100, gas prices went back up.
“if a company fails, just let it fail… only the strong survive… economic evolution 101…”
Problem with that is that companies have employees. Employees with families. And besides the paycheck, alot of these people depend on the pensions, retirements, and health plans that come with salary. It’s not that simple to just sit back and let these corporations drown and not worry about the working folks who get left SOL.
real talk, if u got some extra cash (talking plasma tv money) dont go for the tv but invest. intelligently. you can thank me later. and buy the tv later.
Peep Game Ya’ll…
Lehman Bros. files bankruptcy and B of A takes over Merrill Lynch. So the Fedreal Reserve announced that it was easing the terms of its emergency lending to security firms.
1st Question – How long should it take or does it take to make a decision on policy regarding lending terms? Im sure its not just 1 or 2 days! We all have seen the rules and guidelines for lending terms from investment firms or anything regarding a loan. DANG GONE PUBLICATION NEAR THE SIZE OF “WAR AND PEACE”!
Not only that the Feds developed a fund where 10 firms and banks have to ante up $70 BILLION dollars. They can access these funds in an emergency situation.
Each firm can withdraw 25 billion in emergency situations. The feds say that would increase if more banks are admitted to the pool.
2nd Question – If 10 banks choose to withdraw their portions doesnt that equal 250 Billion?
I dont know about you but that doesnt equal up!! With the stock market the way it is and investors pulling their money out of stocks and the like where is this POTENTIAL 180 Billion short fall coming from?
3rd Question – isnt the Federal Reserve just a glorified loan agency itself?
4th question – What would be the interest look like on a loan like this to keep this fund operative?
And last question……arent they just really bailing out the super wealthy ?
@TURK
hi, hot boy
(no homo)
No lie, when I worked at best buy, they had the best prices, but they overcharge a little bit. better off getting from a privite seller.
CDs don’t sell because they’re overpriced. They’ve always been overpriced. They took the opportunity to bank on “new technology” and duped the world into paying $15-$20 on a piece of plastic, when cassettes (with moving parts and different assembly pieces) never cost more than $10. You can’t tell me that the production of a compact disc is more costly than a cassette tape. Combine that with most albums being half good and the interwebs, and you have low CD sales. There’s no good reason CDs can’t be $9.99. They start selling them at those prices, you’ll see a boost in SoundScan.
@tres… the government doesn’t bail out companies because they care for the employees… they bail out companies because they feel this country would not be able to function without the business… i don’t know exactly what fannie mae and freddie mac are, but it must be nice to know that you work for a company that cannot fail despite its poor performance…
my view on the situation is selfish i admit… unless i really fuck up, i will have a secure job… i will make my mortgage payments… and if the stock market goes to hell i know that it is a great buying oppurtunity that is going to pay off when the economy bounces back…
I know that’s not THE reason they bail companies out, but its A reason why they can’t just let them fall flat. Unemployment is crazy right now. Far as I know, Fannie Mae is a lending institution.
@raine – Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are mortgage lending companies who gave $$$ to individuals to purchase homes. Most of the loans were ARM loans and not fixed.
So when holders couldnt pay the adjusted rates which typically skyrocketed, they just didnt pay and homes went into foreclosure. Which =’s loss of $$ for the mortgage firms!!!! And now they get help from the Feds!
@Greums – WTF? HOT BOY? You need to explain….(*lookin’ at Greums sideways)
