We have been here before…literally. If you check Sorce’s post, it was almost a year ago to the day. And every time we make a trip back around to this neck of the woods, discussions ensue.
So instead of espousing our beliefs as to why this album should be an essential part of the Hip-Hop canon & required listening for all, we’ll let you handle the discussion.
And, for the record, I still do The Wop & cue “The Mall” when the UPS man slings a box onto my doorstep or I walk out of FootAction knowing I just bought crack in the form of rubber & leather.

I still remember going to get this record at Circuit City in Lakeland when it dropped. My favorite cut off of this isn’t You Know My Steez, but Betrayal w/ Uncle Face. I remember having it on repeat every time I put the cd in. I dug The Mall and Above the Clouds w/ the Rebel INS. Gang Starr always came hard. I remember copping soundtracks just for their songs. Caught Up for Work, Blade for 1/2 & 1/2, and Belly had the Militia Remix w/ Rakim and WC, but I got that for obvious reasons. I also remember looking for You Know My Steez 3 Men & A Lady Remix for years after it was mentioned in the fat tape section of The Source. It finally dropped on the 2 disc greatest hits and was well worth the wait. Hip-Hop is the shit.
to10 hip hop albums of all time. period.
required listening for the rooks.
best album of 98?
Lakeland Florida?
I was wondering when we were gonna see this album posted…. damn if this ain’t my favorite Gang Starr album.
Yeah Wit-E.
I know you said before you’re from Tampa. I actually live just north of there in Dade City (aka Bumfuck Egypt).
premo was in charge in 98…..anyone remember the cuts he did on all city?
what about devin the dude….he dropped in 98, juvenile changed the south
That’s my Robbin’ Hood Theory.
That All City album has some bad ass production on it. EZ Elpee, DJ Self, Pete Rock, D-Dot and Ron Lawrence (from the Hitmen) all had hot beats on that album. Not to mention Premier did another track besides The Actual.
I remember seeing the video for Ha on Rap City and I thought it was the ghettoest thing ever. I’ve always been a sucker for a song where the beat changes and I told everyone about that song for months. I also remember The Source saying in their Under the Radar section that Juvenile’s flow was nasty and to check for him. I had 400 Degreez before anyone I knew did, and way before it blew up.
The Militia is my shit. We bumped that hard on the way to baseball practice, like everyday.
This was the first time I ever heard Krumb Snatcha, too.
this verse was like backpacker 101 when i first heard it
So just perhaps you wanna challenge my style of rap
Talkin bout you bust caps, we know that’s just a pile of crap
The underground is where I dwell at
It’s where I find my heaven, and where you find your hell at
You’re in my clutches now, you get slit up and lit up
just like some Dutches now, see I’m hard to define
My mind travels far, from ghettoes to galaxies
representin GangStarr — The street life
The reason why my mic ignites, I bring more ruckus
than a nightclub fight, or bar brawl
I’m swingin lyrics like broken glass palm to skull y’all
Hold your head, cause all that weak shit is dead
See the times are changin, and me and my peeps is gettin crazy fed
So remember when you writing your rhymes
Stop fantasizing, and bring some real shit next time
Yeah, bring some real shit, yo
I remember going to the store to pick this album up. As soon as I heard it was sold. I think i used that money to buy NBA Live ’98……but every gangstarr record is nice, even the ownerz had alot of nice tracks. Gangstarr never put out a bad album…..
just an incredible album…nuff said!!!
Loved this album!
Pre-req listening.
Dope Album from Gangstar…..Up there with Hard to Earn IMO.
