“Los Angeles Times” – Review Of The Game’s L.A.X.
ALBUM REVIEWS By TC on August 27, 2008 at 3:28 pmPerhaps the most puzzling facet of The Game’s character is not the fact that he continuously partakes in unusual antics, but it’s that he has the talent to let his music do the talking — opposed to his various shenanigans. Two critically acclaimed albums deep in the game, and it’s his reputation off-the-record that’s usually the topic of discussion. However, if he wasn’t making good music, nobody would seem to care. And judging from “Dope Boys” and “Game’s Pain,” the first singles off his third album L.A.X., he plans on keeping his spot as the West Coast’s premier attraction intact. He also stays true to his ability to thread the line between commercial and credible for an entire LP.
If it’s not broke, there’s nothing to fix, so The Game follows his redprint to success yet again, enlisting proven heatmakers such as Scott Storch, Jonathan “J.R.” Rotem, and Kanye West to lay the groundwork for his brand of gangsterism. And with valuable producers, you get an invaluable benefit: range. Polar opposites like the dark and scenic “State Of Emergency” and “Cali Sunshine” with its beaming, vibrant inklings of Nottz’ created guitar, both work well within the album’s Californian theme, as does the aforementioned “Dope Boys.” But Game doesn’t let all his production get all the shine as he exercises the flow on the ode-to-freedom “Let Us Live,” exhibits a natural chemistry adjacent Raheem DeVaughn on the rhyme-laden “Touchdown,” and blacks out on DJ Toomp’s heavy metal massacre “House Of Pain.”
Conceptually, Game has never been too much of a prolific thinker. Just a gangsta he suppose. But the highlight of L.A.X. is watching him take steps towards those uncharted waters and venturing out into deeper territory. “Never Can Say Goodbye” finds the Cedar Block Piru accurately (and eerily) recounting some of Hip-Hop’s fallen greats’ last moments with vivid detail. With Wayne on the background vocals and a desolate Cool & Dre serenade on the forefront, Game peels a few extra layers off his thick-skinned demeanor to face some puzzling questions that circulate around his pain on “My Life.” Although it’s not a full explanation of what troubles that brain of his, it’s still a step closer to the light where as he’s kept listeners in the dark for the greater portion of his career.
In the finale, the subject matter jumps from serious to critical on the riveting “Letter To The King” which finds the Doctor’s Advocate and God’s Son reflecting on the accomplishments of Dr. MLK while taking swipes at Jesse Jackson. Here, Game carries out “The Dream” with a greater understanding and austere lyricism like “He set my mind free/so my mind free at last/So much, that I don’t even drink from a fuckin’ glass/I’d rather find the first fountain I can/and do it fast…” Ill.
Yeah, Game drops more names than Sammy the Bull and he rarely is there a moment where he rocks a chorus for dolo. But with the exception of Kanye, there hasn’t been a new artist this decade with a better admiration of constructing albums with all the climatic twists and turns to keep a listener engaged–as well as entertained. Hate it or love it, the underdog is now a top dog in the rap world and with L.A.X., he not only proves the third time is a charm, it’s also a given.

beautiful review…i copped it three times…one each cover haha
^ Still haven’t had a chance to listen to it. I’mma have to get to that. This is so unlike me.
*SMH*
looks like Game cut a check to TSS for this 1.
Can’t wait to get this
Looks like Game making a ransom video on that cover…
The Carter III is better than L.A.X. There. I said it. Here we go.
I know TC is a Game apologist like I’m a Wayne apologist but I’m going to talk about technical feats first. As far as Game’s rhyming ability, I respect it. He has respectable flows, even when they’re not too diverse. Lil Wayne has more flows than he does, as evidenced by the Busta Rhymes “Don’t Touch Me” remix. When faced with the double-time challenge of rhyming on the fours, Game falters.
In terms of having cohesive albums, Wayne’s is an emotive mash of craziness. Game is also much more emotional than he is known for. Gangster emotion registers a little differently but he’s clearly tapping into his “scarred” side for L.A.X. I respect that too, actually.
The name-dropping thing…I’ll never get over. He populates the albums (and the press surrounding the albums) with so many references, you wonder if he has a “self” the way Wayne does. Is he just reconstituting hip-hop as it happens or is he participating in a thriving artistic community? Hard to tell but this album doesn’t stray far from the safety of creating “bookmarks” for hip-hop moments. I’d rather have an emcee who shows me who he is than one who rehashes a lecture about hip hop greats. It’s like… I get it man. I get it.
Although it’s not a 4 star album in MY book, the review is thorough. I don’t know if any of Game’s albums have been 4 star for me because I think his lyricism lacks. The ABAB rhyme scheme gets tiring (see: Rick Ross). If Game could drop and pick up syllables like B.I.G. or place potent double metaphors in rhythm like Jay, it would be understandable for him to name-drop those idols so much. But he doesn’t. He can’t do those things but seems as if he wants credit for BEING that ill emcee.
Since that’s the problem most people have with Wayne (the Greatest Rapper claim) why isn’t anyone questioning Game’s conceit in terms of mentioning Eazy E and torch-bearers to whom he holds no candle?
^Co-muthafuckin-sign!!!!!

LMFAO! I never looked at it like that, but so on point.
Wayne sucks.
HAHA @ ‘ransom video’
I knew Wit-E would be on time… i STILL haven’t listened to this either. I wonder what I’m waiting for?

Nas – Untitled
after 5 weeks : 392k world wide,
thus 400k week 6th ! pretty decent for a no commercial album but controversial release. but hope that nas will be gold at the end of the year. i think right if two singles coming and coming well !
(second official vid “make the w go round” soon so)

Drew, as far as the “bookmarks” and “ABAB” rhyme style references, you were right on point.
DOES Game actually claim to be the best though?
I mean, on record yes, but I’ve never really noticed him go on long diatribes in interviews the way Wayne has…
Wayne couldn’t pass a subject matter sobriety test to save his life, and Game doesn’t challenge the margins on his notebook paper, but for me, it’s much easier to listen to an album that’s AT LEAST coherent.
LAX is a dope album, a lot of guests but non the less it is good listening. Here is another dope LA artist out of OX county to be exact. Ladies and gentlemen….. Madlib

HOW COME ALL THE TI JAYZ KANYE – SWAGGER LIKE OURS linx GOT DELETED?
ANYONE GOT THAT CD QUALITY ZSHARE FA YA BOY?
which ya boy cd?
Ayo Drew……
I feel you peeps and I know all of that is a “In My Opinion” post up. But really man….you can’t really fault Game’s lyrics and not mention Winey’s lyrics or lack thereof.
Case and point , Weazel’s ever popular and trashed “A Milli”, 1st verse –
Ima Millionaire,
Im a Young Money Millie in aire, tougher than Nigerian hair,
My criteria compared to your career just isnt fair,
Ima venereal disease like a menstrual bleed..
Threw the pencil and leak the sheet of the tablet in my mind,
Cuz I dont write shit cuz I aint got time,
Cuz my seconds, minutes, hours go to the al mighty dollar,
And the al mighty power of dat chit cha cha chopper,
Sister, Brother, Son, Daughter, Father motha f**k a copper,
Got da maserati dancin on the bridge pussy poppin,
Tell the coppers..hahahaha you cant catch em, you cant stop em,
I go by them goon rules if you cant beat em then you pop em,
You cant man em then you mop em,
You cant stand em then you drop em,
You drop em cuz we pop em like Orville Redenbacher,
Now I don’t know about anyone else but I think I could muster up a better OPENING vesre than that!! My only point is…. WEABLE AINT AS GOOD AS PEOPLE TRY TO MAKE HIM!
Please lets remember as well how WANYEA wants everyone to think of him as the being an ILL emcee. He even stopped writing his rhymes to be more like JAY and BIGGIE! C’mon mayne……they all have flaws one way or another.
Wayne ability > Game’s ability
Game’s voice > Wanye’s voice
End of
“Nas – Untitled
after 5 weeks : 392k world wide,
thus 400k week 6th ! pretty decent for a no commercial album but controversial release.”
^Controversy is free publicity and it usually equals sales. Hero was the commercial single. It was meant to blow and it didn’t. I think Untitled didn’t do very well not because of controversial reasons or because it was a “no commercial album” but because alot of his fans that were still keepin hope alive and bought Hip Hop is Dead were really disappointed so why would they come out of pocket again for Untitled?
Since this is a Game post -
Letter To The King > any track off Untitled
I’m buying The Recession on the 2nd and just like when I bought The Inspiration I’ll see Nas’s cd and pass. I know Jeezy is no Nasty Nas but Nas isn’t Nasty Nas anymore either so.
and
Game’s charisma > Weezy’s charisma
I concur with The Ricketts Man

“Winey’s, Weazel’s , WEABLE, WANYEA ”
^If your gonna call someone a name other than their real name atleast make it entertaining/humorous. The names above just make u sound lame.
Ma’fuckaz complaining again???!!! Gooooooooddaaaaaamn!!! What does it take to please todays hiphop audience???!!! I guess Wale was right on “The Mixtape About Nothing” when he stated “hiphop ain’t dead it’s the fans”. Real talk my ninja.
And Jeezy over Nas??? Get the fuck outta here!!! If you’d rather hear the ad-lib king over Godson your ass is trippin’ BIG-TIME. I like Jeezy but I ain’t buying his shit over Nasty Nas NO-TIME!!! With all the bloviation over albums and artists going on here I wonder when the fuck do y’all find time to actually LISTEN to anything???!!! Shit.
Game>weezy..at least game doesnt get shitted on when ever he’s on a song with ill emcees
Damn, Nina…
at any mention of Nas, you make the time to point out a negative (or several)…
it borders on being “personal”…
Why is that?
On paper that first verse looks alot better than it sounds. Both Wayne & Game have their faults and strengths. Wayne is a better lyracist (when focused) and Game makes better albums.
At the end of the day: albums (not sales) = legacy. The Game could stop right now and have a quality catalog of albums, while Wayne would be remembered for his antics as much as his output.
As for Nas: his album sales have always been a slow grind in terms of sales growth, but he’ll top out at or around platinum within a year. Hero was a commercial flop, but that’s more on the label not pushing it rather than him not putting out a quality song.
@ Nina
yeah right.
plus Letter to the king > Untitled…. huuu???
yeah cuz Letter to the king iz a Nas joint !!!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/17233023c5f695d3/
Make the world go round iz a Game joint !! u see wha i mean… ! not on the good album… inverse!
“untitled is a lyrical masterpiece” homie.
and Untitled without game’s track > Recession and LAx ! (and i like a lot jeezy’s new release).
yeah, Nas ain’t Nasty, now…[ for the moment ]…
he say himself he’s so Classy . but even classy
Nas’ verses >>>>>>>>>>>>>> everytime.
on all features ! My President is black, “he murdered it”, nahh. (c) jeezy himself.
but with preemo/nas if an album see the light of the day…. illmatic will be Back !
remember : ain’t > at all recession’s verses !

n i still believe that if any other artist had put out HHID…yall would think it was a good album
^ old.sole, from what I see sometimes, you’re prolly 100% correct.
hero is a flop cuz the song and the clip ain’t commercial. yall just the sound is banga with potential but not a hit like got money and tpain ish like everytime.
NaS don’t need a commercial acclaim. [he will be quasi Gold with a flop !!! that’s great indeed.
he needs more and more great music, to have more and more critical acclaim and so have a success in stores. platinium!!! WITH preemo !!! that’s will be damn! so HipHop Ain’t Dead, He’s Coming, next episode.
Good call OED: I didn’t want to call Nina out, but I’d like to know the reasoning behind the venom as well.
HHID wasn’t bad, he ain’t as well as a God’s Son, a Stillmatic o The Classic Among The Classics ! u see ! It was non-homogene album, with different tracks an themes. But a good tribute fo hiphop ! to me.
OED, usually i blame stans…nas seems to lack stans(from wut i seen)…think bout all the ppl callin the amilli video “creative”
“If you’d rather hear the ad-lib king over Godson your ass is trippin’ BIG-TIME. I like Jeezy but I ain’t buying his shit over Nasty Nas NO-TIME!!!”
Did u buy Untitled? If so good. It feels good to support artists u enjoy. I hope your happy with your purchase. I buy cds for the ride and The Recession will last alot longer in my cd changer than Untitled ever would.
It Was Written is one of my favorite cds. I bought that shit on vinyl , cassette, and cd. And over the years I bought the cd a few more times cause it got lost/stolen.
Godson doesn’t do it for me like Nasty Nas did. I like tracks here and there. Godson had a few nice joints on it but I haven’t loved a Nas album since It was Written. Sorry u think I’m trippin but I think people who think Hip Hop is Dead and Untitled are albums worth coppin are trippin. Luckily their not spending my money and I’m not spending theirs so in the end who cares.
i don’t expect anything about dr dre
just detox like yall… to see if the hiphop will see his third revolution of sounds ; or if it will be with timbo ?
in the next years . . .
but yall, a Nas and anDre album… OwW, that can be the best thing in hiphop since the lost “Oh My God” album, never released !
sorry for Blueprint 3! Excuse me Sir Hov ! for that u will the second thing.
Nina fail……”i cop albums for the ride”. wtf. any fan of music will cop music for its quality not how good it sounds on ur poorly equalized system
good review rellish.
dude makes dope ALBUMS, cant argue that. Don’t think I could ever put dude in the top ranks of MC’s, but I can ride with everything he’s put out.
…one comment at a time.

dis trailer > belly 2
“Why is that?”
@OED,
I might come off sounding like a Nas hater but I’m not. I just expected more from Nas and over the years I finally lost interest in his albums.
I wish I could feel the same way some of u do about Hip Hop is Dead and Untitled but I just don’t. Why wouldn’t I wanna like and enjoy an album by an artist I use to listen to on repeat from the summer his shit dropped until the spring or the summer the following yr?
I still like Nas. I still like and sometimes love tracks off his albums but overall the albums themselves haven’t done anything for me.
“if any other artist had put out HHID…yall would think it was a good album”
Bullshit.
Gotta love Suge Knight…beat those women down Big Suge!!!!
in my town no less.
@Turk
Turk aka the huge hug dogg ! lil rascal that you are !! lol

&& word to the Koko B Ware avatar!
The name-dropping thing…I’ll never get over. He populates the albums (and the press surrounding the albums) with so many references, you wonder if he has a “self” the way Wayne does.
I don’t really think Wayne has a “self.” He has made a caricature of what a rapper is supposed to be and rarely ever exposes his true self. The dude talks about all these things like killing, going to the club, and being a martian. He talks about every single female on his songs as a prostitute or a bitch, and kids eat the shit up. This “man” got signed when he was 13 or 14 to a very prosperous label at the time and made alot of money. The only time he got shot is when he shot HIMSELF on accident. He has nothing to say lyrically except negativity. I hate to sound like O’Reilly right now, but that is why i don’t like Lil’ Wayne. He is a bad representative for hip hop. Tha Carter and Tha Carter II were both 4 cig albums for me, but right now he’s making it hard for me to defend hip hop with his sexist, fake gangster bullshit. I don’t think L.A.X. was THAT great either, but i would rather have L.A.X. represent hip hop than Tha Carter III.
I don’t blame the Eagle’s for suing his ass for this shit…
Mama always told me I was crazy,
My hoes say I’m amazing,
But I don’t listen to a lady,
But the bitch say I’m hot,
And I say no bitch I’m blazin,
Like what the fuck do you expect,
I’m muthafuckin cajun
I feel caged in my mind, it’s like my flow doing time,
I goes crazy inside, but when it comes out it’s fine
Like wine, wait, watch, see I get better with time like a watch,
Osh-Ba-Gosh Posh Spice husband couldn’t kick it like I kick it,
Bitch, I kicks it,
No cereal like a land and I sticks it
Whatever she asks me, after she licks it
That’s too explicit,
Well why you listening,
(sniff) I smell smoke, and something sizzlin
That’s her pussy,
So hey pussy play with pussy, or play pussy.
[ Verse 2: ]
They say ya nobody till somebody kills you
Well where I’m from ya nobody till you kill somebody
And you know what they say, when you’re great,
It’s not murder, it’s assassinate
So assassinate me bitch!
‘Cause I’m doing the same shit Martin Luther King did,
Checkin in the same hotel, and the same suite bitch,
Same balcony like, “ASSASSINATE ME BITCH!!”
Slim toche, I don’t rap, I film movies
Wit my rap, you can call me Mr. directors’ chair,
yeah, and that’s a wrap.
Cut on to the next, not the next scene, bitch the next check.
Some say that X makes the sex spec.,
So play with the pussy or play pussy.
How dare he compare himself to Martin Luther King.
LAX blows like a whale!
“Like, OMG…”
Every rapper has their favorite “keywords” to use. So kill all that Game name dropping non-sense. Only reason people pay any attention to it is because 50 mentioned it. I could pick any rapper & point out 5 “keywords” they use in 99% of their songs. Wayne: martian, star, spaceship, b*tch, weezy, not to mention his overuse of the word like….Game: Biggie, Pac, Jay, Impala, Compton. Its not that big of an issue.
“I still like Nas. I still like and sometimes love tracks off his albums but overall the albums themselves haven’t done anything for me.”
—————————–
Nina
It’s ultimately not important whether I recall or not, but I honestly can’t remember you having ANYTHING positive to say about Nas other than in some long ago historical context.
i gave it a 3, tops…
“”i cop albums for the ride”. wtf. any fan of music will cop music for its quality not how good it sounds on ur poorly equalized system”
lmao! I have no use for cds in the crib. Who does?
I could burn Jeezy for the ride now but I’m a fan so I’m gonna support. I’m already listening to it in the ride off my ipod but sometimes I forget the ipod so thats when the 10 dollar cd will come in handy and it will stay in the ride.
for the record….I think that C3 is a pop album…..
I feel the same way about Game that a lot of folks feel about the underground I listen to…
*yawn*
Yeah, I get it. It’s fine.
Blase blah… skip, skip, skip.
It’s not that he’s terrible or wrong or any of that… his beats go hard, at times, and he’s got great timbre to his voice. He’s got personality for days. But he doesn’t bring anything new to the table. At all.
What is he saying? How are his beats or subject matter breaking any ground? Is he really giving you something you’ll care about a year or two from now and still be getting burn? How is he making waves… other than in his interviews?
The dude has built a career on hype over substance.
*Golf claps*
Cant we all just get along ?
^maybe…like tomorrow or sumthin
if C3 is a classic, thus L.A.X too …
but not for me, yall !
if Untitled is a masterpiece. HH ain’t dead !
bye.

I like it. I think it’s been in my car deck the longest maybe since big doe rehab. like 5days straight, even if it’s the shitty explicit webrip. I took it out the other day so i could bump me against the world (classic).

even the intro w/ dmx are tolerable, and the hard liquor skit is such a banging beat and the mexican valet is funny too. except i dont know what he says at the very end of the skit…
“I don’t blame the Eagle’s for suing his ass for this shit…”
^Its The Rolling Stones publishing not the Eagles. And I think we all know they could care less what Waynes lyrics are on the track so posting them was not necessary. They just want their money and thats it.

neew preemo beeat ! ill bill new track ! sick beat !
*waits for ATCQ to sue lil wang*
still deserve to get sued if ur label cant bother to clear samples…especially on a release as big as C3
good review but i disagree, it isn’t that good.

good review but i disagree, it isn’t that good.
===================================================
what he said.
I really think this album deserves 3.5, just like Carter 3. This album certainly has the weakest beats, of any Game release (A Kanye beat with a Gil Scott Heron sample sure sounds dope as hell, but it’s too busy, you can hardly appreciate Game and Common spitting because it sounds like a duck is trying to fuck a keyboard) LAX is more cohesive and focused than carter 3, the highs aren’t as high, Tie my hands, Mr Carter, Shoot me Down, are better than Letter to the King, My life, but the lows aren’t as bad as Waynes, Gentlemen’s affair is a whole lot better than lollipop and La la.
Some seriously nice guest spots though, Nas and Luda both bring the fire.
nice album.
Books Says: “because it sounds like a duck is trying to fuck a keyboard”
I spit water out of my mouth when I read this. I agree. I was trying to figure out what sound was occurring on “Angel” and you about summed it up. I like Game more than Lil Wayne. I am a Left Coaster so it’s a regional thing I suppose. Wayne is weird and sips too much sizzurp. Love him as a hook man though.
the recession > l.a.x.
didn’t love any of the tracks from the new game. the singles: his worst yet. I thought cool n dre and rotem let him down; this was not their best work by any means. I really like the scott storch one though. the recession on the other hand is better lyrically (not saying much) and far better as far as productions go. I really like five or six tracks from the new jeezy. the game like two or three. I think you guys cut him way to much slack on the review. by far his worst effort. I would give 3/5 for the new game and 4/5 for the new jeezy.
I think that LAX = C3, they are on the same level for me, i still bang both…pause…havent got the The Recession yet to put my .02 in, but as far as them 2 they have the same ups as downs…plus I’m always lovin that Spanglish song, shit is hot.
personally, i think its a good album at best… which aint a bad thing, especially in the state hiphop is in. I think he could have done better, esp with all this retirement talk.
This isnt a “black album” moment, not the album you wanna fake retirement on. And seeing as how his 1st album was classic IMO, 2nd album great (yet not classic) and this album just ‘good’ looks like he’s losing steam…
All in all The Game is still a nice emcee… in this day in age dude is still doing “music” which means alot. Dude makes “music” not just compiling hooks and verses, i think he puts time into his craft….
i aint coppin it 2more times 1 is good
anyway im still listnin so far great album
