but if the dream team from back then played the so called redeem team, i think the dream team would shut em down. they played with more passion, more team spirit, and just betta basketball in general.
The Dream Team, for all the hype, nostalgia was just a better constructed team for international play.
You had 12 guys and–only one of whom was under 6′1 (Stockton) and about 8 of those guys could be first option jumpshooters from 15ft on out. You had Bird even hurt he was a knock down shooter. Chris Mullin killed international squads from the outside. Pippen shot ‘em down. Laettner hit shots. Drexler was hittin… Jordan, by 92 was a quality jumpshooter.
Plusm TDT were all way more fundamentally sound in guarding pick and rolls, executing pick and rolls, playing space as well as the ball… way more than this current bunch.
TRT can’t shoot worth a damn. With the exception of Michael Redd who didn’t even play much, nobody on this squad is a knock down shooter; Kobe’s only a good jumpshooter when he’s getting 20-30 shots a night and is in rhythm.
Also, TDT was swole–MJ was 6′5-6′6 pushing 220lb. Chuck was 6-4/6-5 250lb, Malone was huge… Ewing was punching 270lb… Magic was 6′8 230lb… You wasn’t pushing none of those guys around anywhere on the court.
LBJ is the most sold guy on the squad and he was taking some shots.

between the foreign-based talent, the grassroots systems they got for teaching the game and growing talent (as opposed to pimpin’ teens off the blacktop like we do here)… then factor in guys going overseas to ball (if you’ll get a check from Russia, you might get talked into suiting up for ‘em) and the result is gonna be more competition from more squads.
We might take in 2012 but i’m gonna go out on a limb and say i’ll be 50+ before the US gets another gold medal in basketball.
Don’t forget though. International play was different back then, too. They all emulated the NBA and so the players didn’t have to adapt to international rules/style of play. Now it’s a totally different situation. The world done caught up.
