This lifesize poster of the “Black Moses” Isaac Hayes hangs in my family’s basement, better known as my parents’ DJ headquarters. His arms are outstretched with the silent promise to give his adoring masses what they wanted: pure unadulterated soul and funk. With his passing, soul music lost its Supreme Designer this past Sunday.
Isaac Hayes will always be remembered for being the Shaft maestro – the sexual, gritty, testosterone-driven soundtrack of the 70′s soul school era. But there’s a rare B-side that will always be one of my favorites. His “Never Can Say Goodbye” cover never overshadowed the Jackson 5 rendition. But there’s a maturity and a sensual vulnerability that sets it apart. It really strikes a chord if you’ve ever missed someone:
“There’s that same unhappy feeling
There’s that anguish there’s that doubt…
Tell me why, is it so
Don’t wanna let you go.”
Rest in peace, Isaac Hayes. You will forever be missed.

was flipped by the Pointers Sisters into a tracked called Easy Days from their release Steppin with Bonnie Pointer on vocals…
Great entry. I considered putting “Never Can Say Goodbye” on the tribute I wrote earlier in the week, but since the site’s focus is comedy, I put the “Gimmie one rib” clip from I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” along with the “Chocolate Salty Balls” song…lol.
