“‘Yall dont even know every day I’m livin with stress
Got up out the streets you think a nigga could rest
Can’t even enjoy myself at a party unless
I’m on the dance floor hot ass vest
You think I’m freakin’ these chicks right?
I’try not to brush against they chest
You get a lawsuit for shit like that, I feel trapped
Swear to everything when I leave this earth
It’s gon’ be on both feet, never knees in the dirt
You could try me fucka but when I squeeze it hurts, fine
We’ll lose two lives, yours and mines
Gimme any amount of time dont let Ms. Carter grieve
at the funeral parlor drippin’ tears on my sleeve
Told the judge didn’t budge it was him or me
and I ain’t trying to be hard but I’m guilty as charged
Put my mercy on this court and my faith in God
And pray hard none of my nephews wanna be stars…”
Volume 1 is often overlooked or criticized, but hidden between some of the feeble pop attempts were true lyrical gems, such as this song.

Word!
I hate all girls with alterior motives..
@ TC: Huh???!!!
Though I’m 20 plus years old no sons, no daughters…..
Hate putting my life in the hands of fake promoters…
Before The Dynasty this album had all the songs where he actually gave us a look into his personal life. “You Must Love Me” is a a gem as well.
Can’t even enjoy myself at a party unless
I’m on the dance floor hot ass vest
You think I’m freakin’ these chicks right?
that part always made me scrunch my face up because we all know goddamn well shawn corey has never touched a dance floor w/ a broad. The only dancing his ass was doing was in Hawaiian Sophie…
Vol.1 was my shit aside from “I know what girl like”… some songs grow on you over the years but not that shit…
Here the in my voice right? I hate that you noticed……
had to do it, I love that line.
Vol. 1 has several classic Hov songs, “Lucky Me” & Imaginary Players” being my personal faves. They kinda get overshadowed or maybe “outshined” by the glitzy, glossy, “shiny suit” songs which ended up being the reason this is one of Jay’s weaker albums.

Alotta women these days have alterior motives. Most people for that matter.
I guess when you’re caked up AND famous, most prolly seems like everybody.
WTF!!! This hoe don’t even live on the continent- Rep. VP nominee
This song is my shit.
Someone should release a Sarah Palin sex tape.
So…I’m the only one who thought this was one of Jay-Z’s weaker albums?
Don’t get me wrong, it has some killer tracks on it, but besides Blueprint 2 and Kingdom Come (not for me) its one of the weaker ones. Of course, compared to most other artists albums its still very solid, but its a bit ‘pop’ sounding for my liking.
Thank you. Me and my cousins were talking about this. They were not giving any love to Vol. 1

It’s only weaker because it probably has some of his worst songs ever on it. Sunshine & I know what girls like (his worst imo). Maybe you can throw in the city on there, but everything else is up to par.
I am a huge Jay fan, and i already had forgotten about that song. I just didn’t like the album that much…maybe because I’m too young or something…My era was the blueprint and stillmatic…not reasonable doubt and illmatic…Either way it goes, that verse is gonna be hot forever….Jay-Z is the BEST RAPPER ALIVE and will remain the BEST until he dies…At that point, hopefully Pac’s Makevelli theory will have taken place and he’ll be back again! LOL!
@MZ I kinda fucked w/ sunshine…

Real Niggaz
Rap Game/Crack Game (More NaS Vioice Sampling)

You Must Love Me (Classic Kelly Price’s Soul made this song
“Damn I just Shot My Nigga , Ran off into the night as if that was not my Nigga” – Jay-Z
The Lumps of Coal
(Always Be My) Sunshine (Lame)
City is Mine (this actually could of been better I think it was a little extra)
I Know What Girls Like (Lame should have been on Notorious K.I.M.)
The singles messed the album up…
In My Lifetime Vol. 1 sold me on Jay-Z.
I wasn’t convinced with Reasonable Doubt……I feel like I had a reasonable doubt since this was the high priced clothing designer/mafia, cristal era.
In other words, mofos was seeing a lil money and the music was being affected. Thus shiny suit syndrome.

============
Inspiration for the post actually. I kept hearing it my head w/Wayne saying it & wanted to go back to listen to Jay say it instead. Been stuck all week long.
Vol. I was a super solid album. The only tracks I skip are “City is Mine” and “Girls Like” or whatever that ish is with Lil Kim & Puffy.
On the bright side this joint had ‘A Million & 1′ (and then the two remixes that hit the streets). It has Jay’s hardest joint ever- “Where I’m From!” I know ‘P.S.A’. and ‘You Don’t Know’ are hard, but ‘Where I’m From’ was on some different ish.
I was about to list my favs, but it really comes down to everything vs. the two songs I put in the first ‘graph.
Streets is Watchin is another slept on classic…i’m one of the few ‘Hov fans that puts this right up near the top of my list of favorites by dude…reasonable doubt then blueprint then Vol. 1
Niggas wanna strip you to the bone for shit you own
Hate a nigga like that faggot…get your own.
Buckwild on the beat.
Hear the hate in my voice right? I hate that you noticed…
