Live ‘98
ARTIST WEEKS By TC on August 7, 2008 at 10:35 pmThis definitely goes without saying but in terms of posse cuts:
1998>2008
You can front all you want but all these “hood anthems” we’re being bombarded with nowadays are straight up garbáge, and forgettable. Does anyone remember Webbie was on the remix to “Speedin???” Who had your favorite verse on “Don’t Touch Me (Throw Da Water On ‘Em)???” And why is that we refer ever new Khaled collabo as “I’m So Hood Part ____???” The usual suspects of the era still managed to be everywhere there was a studio, but in terms of actually making an impact, the difference is vast. In this day and age, all these dudes are concerned with is cashing a check. And you can tell because that’s all their regurgitated rhymes entail.
While the days of MC’s battling on tracks for bragging rights may be an afterthought at the moment, the legacy is not. Backtrack for a few minutes with these collaborative efforts that’ll guarantee to cause chronic neck spasms when you relive them.
SoNG:
John Blaze (Fat Joe Feat. Nas, Big Pun, Jadakiss, & Raekwon)
Theme: Audio firewater from 5 of New York’s hottest MC’s (at the time).
Producer: Ski
Hottest Line: I hate an actor that plays a rapper/I’m Terror Squad Beta Kappa/Everybody’s favorite rapper — Big Pun
Winner: Fat Joe

See, sometimes less is more. Pun and Rae undoubtedly dazzled with their lyrical gymnastics and Nas and Jada were sly as they wanted to be, but Joe Crack rode the beat with precise precision in the 4th quarter to remind you who put the fuckin’ shit together. It’s simple mathematics.
SoNG:
4,3,2,1 Remix (LL Cool J Feat. Method Man, Redman, Canibus, DMX, & Master P)
Theme: A trick to get people to purchase Phenomenon.
Producer: Erick Sermon
Hottest Line: Canibus is the type to fight for mics/beating niggas to death/and beating dead niggas to life — Canibus
Winner: Canibus

The lukewarm P verse gets props for extending the song’s radio spins. And LL was nice with his performance but it was like your opponent going to bathroom in the middle of a chess game. You cheat. But all things considered, the rookie was the MVP for this joint.
SoNG:
Fantastic Four (DJ Clue Feat. Cam’ron, Big Pun, Noreaga & Canibus)
Theme: Superheros in Hip-Hop! What else?
Producer: Clue & Duro
Hottest Line: Ay yo, the President is like me/he smoke weed too/Don’t really like to fuck/he just get head too — Noreaga
Winner: Noreaga

Unfortunately for Cam, ‘98 was the year he was oft-confused with that Ruff Ryder cat, and Clue may have let Canibus’ “astronomical, physicomicals” run a little too long. With the Latino heavyweights battling for the belt, it was Nore’s charisma that allowed him to edge Pun in the photo finish. You could almost visualize him wildin’ in the booth with every ridiculous statement that he made.
SoNG:
Blackout (DMX Feat. The Lox & Jay-Z)
Theme: A critical beatdown of a Swizz beat, complete with Timbs, hoodies, and chains.
Producer: Swizz Beatz
Hottest Line: I’m Paniro so I hate a snake, rat or a pig/I pop shit cuz I’m the 2nd best/the 1st was BIG – Styles P.
Winner: The Lox

If a gang of spotty solo albums over the years isn’t evidence enough, “Blackout” all but proves how the crew from Yonkers works better as unit. Not that Jay and X came weak, but with Sheek’s imagination, the gangsta of Styles, and Jada just being Jada, they stood no chance. They almost bodied them as bad as they did the Made Men that year…
SoNG:
Banned From T.V. (Noreaga Feat. Nature, Big Pun, Cam’ron, Jadakiss & Styles P.)
Theme: Explicit, horny muzik
Producer: Swizz Beatz
Hottest Line: Disrespect and watch ya body cave in/Pump the shotty gauge in/Hit the shorty while he potty training/I ain’t playin’ — Big Pun
Winner: Inconclusive
“Banned From T.V.” is without a doubt a monumental track. But Pun’s brief excerpt, Jada and Styles tag-teaming, and Nore’s rambling didn’t necessarily dominate the excessive horns that somewhat seem to overshadow them. Quality regardless.
SoNG:
Pure Uncut (Eightball Feat. Silkk The Shocker, Psycho Drama, Mystikal, & Master P)
Theme: Dirty South base bass heavy Hip-Hop
Producer: Mo-Suave-A Productions
Hottest Line: Don’t really want it to be like that but I’ll tear this bitch up if I have to/Shut this mutha-fucka down/bend it backwards!!! — Mystikal (You’ll have to hear it).
Winner: (Tie) Mystikal and Buk
The accomplice to Twista’s “Adrenaline Rush” hit the track with an unorthodox flow that had you guessing where each verse ended and began while Mystikal just straight up ripped shit. No slight to any of the track’s other players but these two just went above and beyond the call of duty.
BONUS - Eightball Feat. DMX, Canibus, & McGruff -Pure Uncut Remix | Pure Uncut Video
SoNG:
Niggaz Done Started Something (DMX Feat. The Lox & Ma$e)
Theme: 187. Redrum. Homocide. Death muthafucka, death!
Producer: Dame Grease
Hottest Line: My 16’s be so real/you can feel ‘em in ya veins like Romello’s Pops from Sugar Hill — Jadakiss
Another hard-headed nigga that wouldn’t listen/so you got/what you came for/(what’s that?)/Surgery with the chainsaw!/Grrrrr…. — DMX
Winner: Everybody

This track is epic for a number of reasons. Not only is it the perfect closer to a beautifully morbid debut album, it’s also the nation’s first (if only) commercial appearance of Murda Ma$e - a young Harlem resident who specializes in killing homosexuals and abusing corpses. Lyrically, Jada and Styles were unfuckwitable and X, given the extra time expected for the track’s owner, did exactly what he was supposed to do: go apeshit, bananas and all. And Sheek, hell he took one for the team, getting outta the way early so his mans could get they shine. The result: 5 MCs, 5 Cig song.
SoNG:
Reservoir Dogs (Jay-Z Feat. The Lox, Beanie Sigel, & Sauce Money)
Theme: A little bit of Shaft, a whole lotta heat, no Tarantino.
Producer: Erick Sermon
Hottest Line: Shit, I lost track @ Sheek’s verse.
Winner: Jay-Z

It would’ve took some immaculate rhyme-slaying for Jigga to bring the click home after they overloaded the bases with incredible metaphors, but a cool, calm and collectively-conceptual Carter shut the building down in under a minute. Big thangs…
Honorable Mention: Pete Rock Feat. Raekwon, Prodigy, & Ghostface Killah - Tha Game

great choices TC…they just don’t make collabos like they used to
“As soon as you chitter chatter/your shit’ll shatter/I’m the kid outta the Bronx/that will stomp you to death like it didn’t matter/I’m even better than before/iller metaphors/killers bet it all on Pun/cuz one verse-dead ‘em all”
That shit is from memory …haha
Anyway, if anybody besides me is into the World Rally Championship, you know they don’t show it on the Speed Channe anymore, but I found a torrent site that got all the events:
http://www.rallytorrents.com/
that honorable mention should have given more shine… i’d put that track up against any of the above tracks…
That’s cuz niggas had to actually get in the studio to do a track together. So you couldn’t slack or your verse might get dropped from the song.
^^^ very good point
I STILL got this issue. Man.
Mundy… I’m going to fly over there and give you a stern talking-to.
Get. Out. Your. Fucking. Keyboard.
Clickity clack, motherfucker. Get to it!
Gotta agree with M.Z. couldn’t email your verse in back then. U had to be at the studio to show and prove. Man I know I’m old now. Cause I’m really sitting down thinking about how live 98 was.
Yo Dirk, you should hook a dude up with Monty Alexander- Concrete Jungle…Perhaps your new CPU can find that joint…mine sure cant….I’m gonna go do some bong hits now and when i return i expect to see a link for that shit….lol…thanks in advance.
I’ll agree that 99% of the posse cuts are booty. but there’s been some heat this last 10 years…
“1,2,3,4″ from Talib, Rah Digga and Xzibit?
“Come Close” Trip Lee, Sho Baraka, Flame
“Philadelphia” feat. Redeemed Thought, J-Silas, R-Swift,
“I ain’t having that” Magnum Force, Starang Wonda, Redman
“Intercession” with Mark J, 4th Avenue Jones, Japhia Life
“I’m Not You” from The Clipse, Jada, Roscoe P.?
Two Words with Mos Def, Talib, ‘Ye
Ghetto Show with Talib, Com and Anthony Hamilton
U DOn’t Know (remix) - M.O.P. & Jay
I’m loving all this 98 shit…cause that’s about where the shift started to happen with music…
The westcoast started to spiral downward :(
While the eastcoast was getting unified and started taking over shit…i,.e Ruff Ryders, The Roc etc.
Nowadays collabos ain’t what they used to be
Talent ain’t what it used to be, and hell “The Source” ain’t even worth reading anymore
sommo’:
“Peruvian Cocaine” - Immortal Techniqe, C-Ray Walz, PumpkinHead
“Rising Down” –The Roots, Chrisette Michelle, Wale
“Rising Up”–The Roots, Mos Def, Styles P.
“Guess Who’s Back” feat. Face, Ye, Beans, Jay
“Soapbox” feat. AckDavis, R-Swift, Young Josh, Phien-X, Monty G, Mark Arthur
“Round & Round” Remix–Jonell, Method Man, Pharoahe, Kool G. Rap

ALL OF THIS WAS 98?????

I have that Source issue…
Only in much better condition!

@ Canseco
a couple more:
Guerilla Monsoon Rap - Talib, Monch, Black Thought
Get Em - Mr Porter Jay Electronica Guilty Simpson
Ay, this week has been great, one of the best in a long time on TSS,. I’ve just been sitting back amd reading all the post, comments, and production credits for most of the music yall posted. I see that many of the producers from these tracks are similar to the music thats out now, just one ‘of dem thangs that makes you go hmmmmm’…..
I have been biting my teeth all week long, I wanted to get into so much of the debates and what not but im glad I didnt…..
GREAT WORK, THANKS!!
to answer your question Games verse was best :P
got damn! this is one week when i wish i had internet…
*patiently awaits for “the week in review”*
aHH nINE aTE bABY !!!
NEVER GUNNA BE NUTTIN LIKE IT AGAIN !!!
ALL THIS CRAPP WE GITTIN NOW A DAYZ…
IM ‘BOUT 2 SWITCH GENRES ..LOL
NAH SYKE !!!
If you missed out on hip-hop in ‘98, you’re a loser.
That cover is in such bad condition cuz I read those more than my textbooks back in high school. Magazines were all that was in my bookbag… hence my horrible cum gpa.
gotta give a shout to Cam’s verse on Banned From TV…that song is my SHIT!
but 4,3,2,1 is the best one.
swear to god, was rapping DMX’s verse to the lady this AM while she was putting on her face and I was in the shower….
“cuz it’s….better to give….”
No mention of Nature on “Banned From T.V.”? Come on!
That’s sad too, cuz I was just thinkin of throwing away my old ass The Source issues when I just moved. That’s how much I hate the magazine now. I got Vibes from 1994. But not that first issue with Snoop. That’s priceless.
shooooooooo…..10 fucking years ago!!! man i’m almost 30 in this bitch!!!!
man 1998 was the bomb year…most likely catching me in front of the lunch room hanging wit older cats and them asking me how the fuck i got clues springtyme stickup so damn early. shit just a ghetto nigga puttin up will smith numbers ya dig?
i remember totally going ape shit when i heard his verse on 4,3,2,1…he was that cat where everyone was trying to be ther first cat to put you on to some obscure Canibus freestyle….like i speak at frequencies dogs would have trouble hearing Canibus is the lyrical version of German engineering, raw metaphors keep em high for months, fly around the world twice without refueling once.
dope post!!!! best of this week!!! my bad but i gotta finish that verse…
if you look at me long enough, i start to read your thought if your signal was strong enough, than i call your bluff like how many rhymes you got? i can go for more millienias than mazdas got on the car lot. aint no where to run to when i confront you. nigga i call your bluff like you had a phone number. who wanna see canibus get wild. who wanna act fly? and get shot down with with a surface to air missile, i take em on in all shapes sizes and forms any nigga close enough for me to spit on. 0-60 im already doing a hundrend when i’m blunted and i give it to any nigga who want it…..
