When you decide to remake one of the most influential rap songs of all time, you better do it right.
So like I told TC, Def Squad came correct with their remake in ’98.
When it came time for Reggie, Erick Sermon and the ‘baby of the bunch,’ Keith Murray, to record their version of Sugarhill Gang’s archetypal “Rapper’s Delight,” they didn’t do much more than tweak the original.
Aside from it becoming the trios only real hit, it was (and is) the only reason I can spit just about every single word to the almost 7-minute song when I hear it get play at clubs with taste.
Word to my youth.

True, Def Squad did successfully make a “true old school” gem sound relevant but Pun & Joe shaaat on the original Deep Cover like their was no original. And like Pat M. said, when it gets to that “Lil’ Italy, middleman rhyme,” END game. Even Snoop was in the video showing love. I gave you fair warning Beware, Deep Cover ’98 is killin’ anything “delightful.” Grit over gloss homie.
Def Squad – Def Squad Delite
VS.
Big Pun & Fat Joe – Deep Cover ’98

Deep Cover aka “The song where Pun blacks out and becomes a hip-hop immortal” gets my vote…
Sincerly,
Def Squad Fan
Pun and Joe kill it, hands down… Def Squad’s “Rapper’s Delight” was a cover, the Twinz straight murdered the Dre beat (shit, even crack’s verses were tight…”i’m still the fat one that u love to hate/ catch you at ya mother’s wake/ smack you then i wack you with my snub tre-8″….whaaaaat)…whatever, pun wrote that whole joint anyway but damn, every time i hear that beat come on i always secretly hope and prey it’s the twinz version…is that wrong?
both remakes do the O.G.’s justice…
but they don’t capture that classicness, if that makes sense…
Def Squad’s version DOES capture the playfulness present in the O.G…
and Pun & Joe got that back & forth thing down pat…actually, Pun & Joe would prolly shit on Dre & Snoop lyrically
Both joint were dope but you gotta give it to Pun & Joe Crack. One of the illest ever over a “Chronic” era Dre beat. Crazy. Don’t completely sleep on Fat Joe either. The back & forth between the “Twins” was crazy.
Both zshare links are the same..
*wormin’ to Nice & Smooth’s “Hip Hop Junkies”*
Brett’s a Jet
my vote goes to pun..even though yall didnt put the song up…?

^ not wrong, but it IS funny…lol
lol @ young berg (no offense amp, i know that ain’t your cup o’ tea)
i can’t lie tho, “Sexy Can I” gets burn when i’m doin the do
Damn, my brother’s a Jets fan, I was wondering why he was blowin up my text so damn much
I try to listen to everything at least once. Sometimes you can find a diamond in a steaming plie of poop lol. Dude is a servicable mc & has basically started his own movement without a co-sign from an established MC or producer. He’s also proven to be adept at a skill that even escapes some of the illest MC’s signed or unsigned. The kid knows how to make a hit record. Only time will tell if his talent level will one day rise to the level of his own ego, but who knows.
Jets get Favre? Schweeet!
Why is “Sexy Lady” on his album?
So are they gonna change the Madden ’09 cover to Brett in a NY uniform..?
I gotta go with Deep Cover on this one…
I’m forever indebted to def squad for allowing me to spit the original “rapper’s delight” and look like a Hip-Hop historian in front of company, so they win.

“Blueprint 3!!”
This is a no contest. I am an old head and I love that Def Squad let the original shine thru .. hell I sto – acquired that album on the strength of the single alone..
BUT
The Deep Cover remix was UNDENIABLY better
This question is blasphemy.
Deep Cover. Pun dumbed out.
the question isn’t which cover, it’s compared to the original.
Nice as BP and JC were their rhymes had nothing t do with the song’s intent.
The song was about a good cop gone bad and getting even with corrupt undercover cops.
Big Pun talked neither. Joey talked neither.
They painted some nice pictures, went in hard, but the song coulda been called “Gorrillas in the midst” or “rhyme animals” and it would’ve been the same results.
the def squad cover at least sticks with the heart of the song’s intent and essence.
Pun took the crown with his verse.
Deep Cover in a landslide
Covering Rapper’s Delight seems a little uninspired, Pun and Joey Crack took a dope Dre beat and just tore into it. Trying to rap along to it (don’t front, we all try) leaves you breathless – for me this is the one of the most satisfying songs to listen to, excellent example of quality flow over a raw beat…Listening to Pun on this track and
Pun on ‘Yeah, Baby’…what the fuck happened?
Pun !
legend.
Latinoooooooooooooo
Deep Cover.
No question.
