Words By Landon A.

In the 90′s, there was only one TV show that joined Hip-Hop music and culture with the youthful sense of humor courtesy of a cast of up-and-coming stars. In Living Color was arguably the dopest sketch comedy show of a generation. From Snuff & Roam to Homie The Clown, In Living Color put a twist on humor that made it relevant to the times.

Let’s not forget the dope performances either. Grand Puba, Redman, Pete Rock & CL Smooth as well as Gangstarr have all blessed the stage and melted faces on the show during its years on the air.

And the Fly Girls…oh the Fly Girls. They could have very well been the reason I wasn’t allowed to watch the show as a kid (but did anyway when my folks left the room…sorry mom). J.Lo as a Fly Girl dancing to routines choreographed by Rosie Perez? My young heart swooned.

But unfortunately like all good things, In Living Color came to an end. Ultimately all of the Wayans (yes ALL of them) had bailed out of the show and it aired its last episode on May 19, 1994.

Since the demise of the show, Jim Carrey & Jamie Foxx have gone on to become movie superstars, Jennifer Lopez graduated from backup dancer to full on diva and Shawn and Marlon Wayans gave another show a try only to see it flop. (Note: I’m going to go ahead and say I LOVE The Wayans Bros; John Witherspoon totally made that show).

No sketch comedy show today brings the refreshing comedy that In Living Color did back in the 90′s. No sketch comedy show reps Hip-Hop culture like they did either, so for that I give In Living Color “two snaps and a rewind” – Men on Film.
