gettin me hyped up with that old nas ish…what do y’all think – “Illmatic” and “It Was Written” = best #1 and #2 effort by an emcee? if it ain’t the best, it’s at least top five…what’s good with a (c)rank it – first and second album edition?
That would go to B.I.G. sir. No question.
BIG, Nas, Pac are the usual suspects, but it could definitely get people talkin…i’d give it to Biggie by a hair over Nas…just think what coulda been if the man had been around to drop 3, 4, etc.
“currency is made in trust of the messiah/i’m spendin’ it to get higher/earth wind and fire singin’ reasons why i’m/up early, trustworthy is a nine that bust early …”
that’s mandatory good monday mornin’ listening for me on my nyc commute – speakin’ of which, that 2nd pic was taken right up the block from my school (@ grand central), and i swear that’s how it looks when i’m on my way home from class. eerie.
where that game (dirty) at?
^^^ co-sign TC.
Gotdamn, Gotty, that joint ALWAYS reminds me of driving around Manhattan at night…I guess it puts you in the same mood as well..
always loved that song… “Illmatic” and “It Was Written” > “Ready to Die” and “Life after Death”. Hypnotize might be the most bangin rap song of all time though. Nas could never make a track like that, much less a Hard Knock Life.
rosecity – reverse your > to a < (ha!)
we could argue all night but i listen to nas’ first two way more than big’s.
@ Rosecity
That may be your preference but for the reason you stated about “Hypnotize” & Hard Knock Life is why Nas doesn’t get that nod. He’s not as versatile. And I’m amazed at people who try to act like It Was Written was as good or even on par with Illmatic. I met a few, not a lot but it always makes me scratch my head.
Those are some dope ass shots Gotty.
Kast got the best 1,2,3
^ hmmmm … valid point.
I’d give the 1,2,3 to Mobb Deep.
Maybe Kanye.
I’m not gonna sit here and pretend Kast got an universal classic besides Aquemini cuz they don’t.
Tribe got the best 1,2,3 (also)
Redman got the most underrated 1,2,3
Juvenile Hell, TC?
@ Tres
I didn’t think it had to be a direct order. Like if someone wanted to note Common’s Be to Finding Forever or Scarface’s Last Of A Dying Breed to The Fix, I don’t see any harm in that.
But Juvenile Hell doesn’t exist to me.
Definitely Southernplayalistic & ATLiens No Question!!!!
And If Youre Going 1,2,3 Aquemini
ahh shit, in that case give me Gang Starr, Daily Op./Hard2Earn/Moment of Truf. I’ll take Brand Nubian’s 1,2,3 as well.
Also, is there a more solid 1,2,3,4,5 than EPMD?
And if Detox turns out to be another masterpiece, will Dre have the greatest 1,2,3 of all time??
Or Dr Octagon, Dr Dooom, And Black Elvis
com. sense for an honorable mention?
*snagglepuss*
the roots, even… heavens to murgatroid – exit stage left…
Sex Style Does Not Count
seems better if it’s debut (1), and 2 (and 3?)
a rough list:
Run-DMC
Tribe
BIG
Nas
Kanye
‘Kast
EPMD
Ice Cube
Redman
De La
KRS
Gangstarr
Ghostface
Busta Rhymes
for real tho, Run-DMC’s first 3 kill most any first 3
^^^
:-/
I just threw out the last few for arguments sake, but the list down to about EPMD is thorough. Run-DMC’s first 3, and Tribe’s first 3 were crazy.

LOL
Best 1,2?
Nobody gonna mention Rakim? Kane?
If we’re talking newer cats, I’d have to go w/Big & I ain’t even huge on dude’s legendary status like that. But his first (and only) two albums = pretty hard to top.
@ Gaucho (how am I Gaucho? That’s YOU! LOL)
I was refering to the Run-DMC comment. R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the architects that built this shit, but lets be real.
Tribe has a stronger case than Kast. Hell I’d put Goodie Mob’s first two against theirs. Kast are by far the better rappers but they set it with Aquemini that kinda cast a shadow over the rest of their discog. And it’s not that the other albums aren’t exceptional product either.
Any props for Game’s first two, anyone? Or the first two BDPs for sure.
You coin the name, I pass the shame….
Gaucho Libre (Gaucho-Free)
Good choices for 1st 2′s….
BDP (hell yeah!), Tribe, and yeah, Goodie seemed to already have learned from ‘Kast and came out real strong on their first 2.
If it’s JUST1st 2′s, De La makes as strong a case as anybody… Their 3rd, Buhloone Mind State was solid, but a little too way out there.
I’m sorry but I’m like Lupe, Tribe wasn’t required listening where I’m from. I would take the 1st 3 8Ball and MJG’s over them any day. The first 3 Kast albums are classic, so it isn’t even an argument. Its Kast and then everyone else.

LOL @ 8 Ball & MJG over ATCQ
please
@ TC – told u it was at least worth a discussion…u don’t give ATLiens enough credit IMO…definitely a timeless classic…bangin from front to back
ATCQ get too much credit IMO. They were cool, but damn! Folks act like they invented the wheel or something. I own some of their music, but don’t really hold a lot of weight with me. EPMD gets WAY more love in my book.
Folks acted like they invented the wheel or something
=====================================
Um…they kinda did. I’m sure EPMD will both tell you Tribe is better
@ Sherm
Bangin’ front to back doesn’t equal a classic. Once you understand that everything can’t be a classic, you’ll understand where I’m coming from with ATLiens
EPMD and Tribe aint even in the same lane!!
Or level
When I was young I want to be like EPMD. That’s the level of influence they had around my way. Tribe was cool, but no one really bumped Tribe like that. I give them props, but that’s where it stops.
EPMD = The first successful “swag” rappers.
@ Milwaukee
But you’re speaking from your own narrow perspective. U gotta see things from a broader scale. If you missed out the Tribe like that…its never too late to go back.
So ninja is saying EPMD wasn’t spitting! Ya dudes tickle me for real!
So TC…
Is Dre’s “2001″ a classic?
Naw I own there stuff. That’s all my older cousin played when I went by her house. Those dudes were just good, but that’s it. Also, I understand they influence Kast but it NO competition when you compare the two. Tip aint seeing 3000 on the mic. Hell he wasn’t seeing Phife!
i thought we were talkin bout the best 1,2,3 in that order….
Kast has that easy.
@ E
Its not even close!! Kast wins it!
‘Kast = best 1,2,3 and 1,2,3,4
@ Milwaukee
Why EPMD gotta be discredited because they’re not better than so and so. We know what they did, they’re living legends and basically all their hit records have been redone: testmant of greatness
@ Amp
Of course it is. It comes off as a little bloated because a handful of songs are extremely strong, but if you listen to the lyrics on every joint or listen to the precision that went into every beat, its obviously a work of art. One of the best orchestrated albums ever.
Kast
I think where every gets confused with Kast is that while they’re some of the dopest/illest/capable MCs on the planet, their albums seem to get boosted up because of the fact — namely ATLiens.
Now truthfully, there’s nothing wrong with the album but if there’s any low points, its that 1) in terms of production diversity, this is probably last on their discog. All the beats sound like came from the same sperm cell. Not saying they’re weak but definitely not the best thang poppin’ and 2) Most of the songs really ain’t about nothing. Just displaying their dopeness on the mic. Not a bad thing either but they showed equal flair on the mic for Southernplaya… and Aquemini while tackling some weighty topics (not to mention the colorul musical arrangements they utilized)
Balance of power.
@ TC
I didn’t discredit EPMD? My thing is this. I’m almost 30 so I remember Tribe from their start. They have dope music sho nuff, but when I place their music next to Kast its not even close. Now with them and Ball & G that’s just personal taste, but I know a gang of people who feel the same way.
@ TC
Ummm…no.
“2001″ comes off bloated, because it is. Tell me “Bang Bang” isn’t maybe the worst song Dre has ever done. There are some classic songs on there, but as an album, it’s just not as good as “The Chronic”. It may have been among the best albums that year, still doesn’t make it a classic.
“Let’s Get High” is a cool joint, but c’mon B. Aside from Dre & Kurupt’s verses, this is a snoozer. “Murder Ink.”? The bad songs jump out because of how wack they were. You can’t compare a hungry Snoop, Daz, Kurupt, RBX, & Lady Of Rage to Hittman (where is that Hittman album they aludded to in the end of the “Forgot About Dre” video?), Ms. Roq, Six-Two, Knoc-Turn’al, and whatever anonymous, hasn’t been heard from since, was a wrap as soon as they signed to Aftermath mc I might’ve forgot.
4.5 mics/cigs
I think that was The Source’s original rating. Sounds about right to me.
fact: 8Ball & MJG are legends, there’s no doubt about that, and I do fuck wit them…but their influence has primarily been regional.
fact: Lyrically/stylistically/verbally, Andre 3K is light years ahead of most rappers, past or present, dead or alive.
fact: ATCQ & ‘Kast are icons/elders/legends who have had way more influence in the game/industry/culture than 8Ball & MJG…put them on the same level as Run-D.M.C., P.E., N.W.A., Wu-Tang
8Ball & MJG and Tribe? don’t ever bother mentioning them in the same sentence ever again…Tribe preceded them and more people know more of their songs word for word and 8Ball & MJG don’t have ANY classic records that get mentioned alongside People’s Instinctive Travels, Low End Theory, or Midnight Marauders
end of discussion
@ Amp
The impact of the album kinda merited that extra .5 Why is Dre relevant at this current date and time. What raised the awareness of Eminem’s skills in the “hood”? How did Xzibit become a household name? Why do we care about Detox? Why did the hype around 50 triple when he signed to Aftermath? Its this album. Yeah you can go in and knitpick the little things (“Murder Ink” ain’t hot? And “Bang, Bang” nor “Let’s Get High” aren’t bad songs. Hatin’ on Ms. Roq I see lol) like you can do with Pras’ verses on The Score but sometimes it becomes bigger than the music. And in 1999, it was the best album that year.
@ Milwaukee
Nah, you were saying something about niggas saying EPMD weren’t spitting. I mean Tribe might not have made a powaful impak! boom with the cannon where you layed you head but you can’t ignore how they influenced a nation of millions. I don’t think they’re better rappers than Outkast but for the type of albums they put out, I’d say they had their craft mastered from the start while Kast made sacrifices in the form of experimentation.
ATCQ is the only one whom I can listen to the 5 albums in a row on a regular basis.
The thing with Tribe is they fell the fuck off AFTER those 3 albums. I was done with them after I copped that “Beats, Rhyme, and Life” trash! Sorry Teef but Ball and G got classics. You may not be a fan, but plenty of southern rappers have been influenced by them, ask Luda or TIP.
2) Most of the songs really ain’t about nothing. Just displaying their dopeness on the mic.
u mighta heard but werent LISTENING…
jazzy belle…babylon…mainstream…E.T.
^^^ those werent about anything?
@ TC
Naw I was asking were dudes saying the weren’t spitting. Dudes were calling them swag rappers like the didn’t do there thing. I think line for line, album for album Kast is better. Even with the experimentation, because the experiments worked.
Tribe fell off….yeah, I’ll admit that, if you’re referring to their output of critically acclaimed albums…even Q-Tip admitted that a reunion and a new album is out of the question simply cuz it wouldn’t be right
so, if that’s the case….
8-Ball & MJG fell off too.
last album they did…uhhhh….I don’t remember nobody playing that shit or even talking about it
as emcees, Q-Tip & Phife were not Rakim or Pharoahe Monch…they didn’t need to be because Tribe’s music wasn’t just about beats or rhymes, it encompassed an aesthetic
@ E
Add 3000′s last verse on “Elevators” too. Really the whole album
@ Teef
OK sure…..If you say so.
“Bang Bang” off 2001 is my shit.
^ You can’t be serious.
That chorus is so jarring, it ruins everything else that’s going on. Skip.
^ You can’t be serious.
That chorus is so jarring, it ruins everything else that’s going on. Skip.
@ E – thank u
all I know is I won’t hold my breath for the day 8-Ball & MJG get a spot on VH-1 Hip-Hop Honors, either as honorees OR performers…not to say that recognition by a Viacom network validates one’s existence, but…
Tribe’s been there already, and it won’t be long ’til ‘Kast gets there either
I’m dead serious.
“EVERYWHERE I GOOO
ALL I EVER SEEM TO HEAR IS…
BANG BANG!
[cock back]
BANG BANG!”
@ Wit
What about “Ova Da Wudz,” “ATLiens,” “2 Dope Boyz…” “Wheelz Of Steel”
(Ahhh I said “Wheelz Of Steel” gotta listen to it lol)
I didn’t say all, I said most, and its true. We love the music anyway.
“Bang Bang” ain’t that bad
Hey can we talk it out!?!?
so what u want TC, an entire album of the same shit? that would get old…so they did what they always do, they made the deep thought provoking shit…the gangsta shit…the next level shit…the radio friendly bangers….and put it all 2getha on 1 album an made it work.
@ Teef
There certified in the South! They don’t need a “VH-1″ stamp of approval! Especially the VH-1 who honors Missy! No one waiting on a VH-1 certification playboy!
What you mean? Aquemini isn’t the same shit. Very diverse. They were just some regular dope boyz “Skewing It On The Bar-B” but what about Dre spitting acid on modern science on “Synthesizer” or White America on “Y’all Scared”? What’s fuckin’ with “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” musically on ATLiens?
ATLiens is an incredible record but they proved that could top it musically and conceptually with several of their other albums.
Wait. What’s wrong with Missy?
@ TC
If we going to honor hip hop, there’s a whole gang of people who should have went before her. She did her thang and all but lets be serious!!
so because they made a betta album than ATLiens, ATLiens cant be considered a classic? get the fuck outta here….we arent arguin a betta album of ATLiens vs Aquemini….dude called Nas the best 1-2 album, u said Big would get that, and then i said Kast would get best 1,2,3…nobodys 1st 3 albums stack up against Kasts 1st 3…thats all im sayin…
if you redirect A WHOLE SOUND THROUGHOUT THE GENRE (jazz samples/TRIBE) based off the strength of 3 albums, I think it’d be safe to assume those albums did their tbing.
Neither 8 Ball & MJG, nor Outkast had that kind of influence – & I’m in no way trying to discredit their music.
@OED
And I understand what you saying and you right. My thing is this, just being first to do something doesn’t make you the best by default. George Mikan was the first big man to kill in the league, does that make him better than Shaq or Wilt? HELL NAW!
Why is this even an argument? You know how silly it sounds to try to discredit the classic status of ATLiens, 2001, Tribe’s first 3… Regardless of how good each individual track is, these are albums that are universally loved and regarded as some of the best work this genre has to offer.
When you cop an album and you throw it in the stereo and almost force yourself to listen to it front to back a few times, if its a masterpiece like those mentioned, you realize how those weaker tracks fit into the grand scheme.
@ OED – i think ‘kast has had close to (if not as much) influence on hip-hop music and culture (especially in the south) as anyone….10/10 rappers from the south are gonna cite them as major influences (and probably 5/10 from everywhere else)
“the grand scheme”
good point, Tres
all of these groups/albums had weak cuts IF you detach them from the album, but that’s the whole point…these dudes were crafting ALBUMS while their peers were still learning how to craft a proper song.
@ Milwaukee
that’s exactly what I’m saying though. As far as the jazzy samples heard all throughout that particular era, NOBODY was effin’ w/ Tribe at that point. They were running the point, & other groups were waiting to see what THEY were doing.
It’s all good though. It’s an interesting debate nonetheless
“i thought we were talkin bout the best 1,2,3 in that order….Kast has that easy.”
I agree. Tribes first 3 albums were all great but no one switched it up like Outkast. All 3 Outkast albums had their own unique sound. Tribes were all in the same vein.
although kanye isn’t really a rapper (although I do kinda like what he brings to the table), his first three efforts are outstanding. I can’t think of anybody else who comes even close. yea, maybe Outkast, def not Tribe, Nas comes to mind (though I Am… has only about 4 good tracks, outstanding nonetheless). Probably not The Game; I skimmed through the beats and is def a step down from his last two, and yea, the name dropping is ever prevalent.
maybe outkast? are u serious? u sayin kanye’s albums are betta than kasts? pleeeeeeeeeeease….
not even close.
^^^
I’d take Kanye’s 3 over Kast’s 3 as a whole. Aquemini is the trump card but Late Registration>ATLiens no question and don’t even wanna mention the other one
I can’t believe Cube didn’t come up for first two.
lol @ Late Registration > ATLiens…and are you saying Graduation > Aquemini???…it’s funny how people state things like they’re facts when in all reality all of this is just opinion…Kanye’s skills on the mic are questionable, especially when compared to Dre 3 or even Big Boi…yes, his beats are good, but so are organized noise’s…they’re not even really in the same genre; especially Graduation, which is more of a pop album than a hip-hop album
Aquemini is the trump card
===========================
I thought that was pretty explicit. Kanye ain’t got nothing topping that, but as whole, I say he takes it.
Compare the varied subject matter, production, and impact of Late Registration and ATLiens and look how they measure up. Again, everybody’s get caught up in how nice Twins are on the mic, we’re talkin’ album vs. album.
People are quick to shit on Tribe and I gotta laugh.
Are y’all getting caught up on the rhymes or listening to the albums as a whole?
To each their own, but damn…
im kinda late butIt was written>>>>>>life after death(its way overrated)
as for 1,2,3 that vote goes to Kast Aquemini>>kanye’s catalougue
just for the record, i have never (and would never, ever) shit on Tribe…as far as Late Registration vs. ATLiens goes, most critics are gonna agree with you just because they’re Kanye dick riders…it’s a dope album, no doubt, but there’s definitely weak spots (lyrically and (less so) production-wise)…i don’t think it’s a “classic”…i don’t think it has an amazing amount of playback value at all…the beats maybe, but the lyrics? ATLiens, on the other hand, has almost as much impact now as it did when it came out imo
album vs album i would take any of Kasts 1st 3 albums against any of kanyes albums…
kanye isnt anywhere close to the same level as andre or big boi on the mic and i prefer organized noise production to kanyes.
This debate today is why I come here! While I didn’t agree with some, I respect everyone taste and opinion.
What about Ghostface? He got a solid 1,2.
