Words By David D.
Three years ago today, we all witnessed one of the most devastating storms in recent history lead to one of the biggest debacles in American history. As someone born in Louisiana and raised in Mississippi (essentially maintaining dual citizenship in those states the whole time), I can attest to the tremendous struggle we’ve had to face in the last three years. My home states have pulled together and clawed their ways back. Granted, New Orleans is still not the same as before. Neither is Mississippi, but the progress has been heroic.
On this three year anniversary of Katrina’s arrival in New Orleans, I received messages and emails from friends and family that had moved out of the city in preparation for another hit from Hurricane Gustav. Evacuations seems to be moving more smoothly, but the fear is still in the air that we will have a repeat of the tragedy from Katrina.
New Orleans is a city whose culture is based on celebrating adversity. Just look at the Jazz funerals that celebrate the lives of those passed. So instead of wallowing in my own worries and fears for my loved ones and loved cities, I’m gonna cue up some Juvenile and pre-Baby-kissing-Weezy, whip up a daiquiri and middle finger that bitch-ass Gustav.

Gustav got upgraded to a Hurricane. It’s expected to hit the gulf, levees and all early next week.
watch the eff out, fam!
Be Safe Bro’.
But please ..cue up Maze instead.
Good shit homie, enjoy that daiquiri while the rest of New Orleans joins you in that middle finger salute. By the way, gumbo might be the best edible thing on the planet
Props for mentioning this. I was born n raised in Nola. Left after the Katrina but my friends and fam that still live there are all evacuating for Gustav right now and callin me stressed out and fearing the worse.
The levees are stronger now than pre Katrina so as long as they hold no Katrina’s going to take place again. Not to say Gustav might not fuck some shit up but I don’t think my old neighborhood will see another 12ft of flood waters from Gustav.
I told them I’d celebrate this holiday weekend for them too since their plans unfortunately got screwed thanks to Gustav.
GWB’s ass will be chillin’ with McCain somewhere. he might show up this time…

man, I doubt we have another “katrina” incident…lord knows we can’t take that shit again.. “When The Levee’s Broke” was my shit…had my ass crying like a baby..
At least we are learning something. I read something like 700 buses will be evacuating some 35,000 people before the hurricane comes, we are actually taking precautionary measures. It’s a small step but it’s a step. That’s the one thing I hate about living in the US, we dont really do anything preventive we just act when it happens, in certain areas at least. Rebuilding levees is not preventive, they dont even know if they will hold, it’s ridiculous. Why half ass it, make sure the shit can withstand anything our imagination can conjure. Talking about this shit gets me heated, hate seeing people having to live like that.
