A Great Day Indeed…
ARTIST WEEKS By MZ on August 8, 2008 at 4:33 pmOn Sept. 29th 1998 thanks to the efforts of XXL, 200 old and new school Hip-Hop artists assembled on 17 E. 126th Street in Harlem to show solidaridarity as they recreated the photo of Jazz musicians taken by legendary photographer Art Kane back in 1958 at the same address. The East, West, Midwest, and South were all represented the group got together to reflect on how far culture had come as well as what direction it would take in the years to come.
But don’t take my word for it, listen to those who were there.

Photoshop.
I wish I had this cover as a poster.
That’s actually a dope picture. It MAY, just may be photoshoped up. But dammit, it’s a good job.
If it was photoshopped, they would have been exposed for it. Come on people.
yeah, photoshop? cmon…i swear we believe lies more than the truth and vice versa now…
but yeah, they actually had this joint available as a poster for the few months following this issue dropping. I wanted to buy it, but I was a broke college freshman when this dropped, so cutting this joint off and putting it up on my wall had to do…the story they wrote for it was cool too, i remember them saying how Lauryn almost didnt make it, and that when she did make it…she left right afterwards…no fellowshipping! ahahahahh
Only thing hip-hop was using photoshop for back in ‘98 was Southern album covers.
LOL @ MZ
Pin & Pixel foreva!
I still have this issue I knew it was something special as soon as I picked up.
Is anybody who has this issue willing to scan it as a HQ tiff, then post it somewhere?
As long as you have a HQ tiff you can take it to most printing/copy centers and get a poster made, although it will be pricey ($50+)
fucking dope cover…
On a side note anybody got
Sway & King Tech – This or That (1999)
Can’t find anywhere
I still never understood why SHAQ was included. Can someone justify that?
I got a poster of this mounted on hardboard right next to Art Kane’s Jazz Portrait from 1958….taken in the same spot as the Great Day in Harlem joint…
Shaq Fu! Fu Schnickens… My biological didn’t bother was actually a nice little song… So yeah, Shaq’s on the cover in the photo.
@Black – Yeah I know. BUT WHY?
@NDiamond….where can i get a copy of that poster?
I never was aware of the picture of the Jazz artists that inspired it.
@ fatty, yeah I have it, but no scanner. Even with one, not many people’s scanner could take a four-page foldout scan.
@wytemike, ripping.

I remember I kept this cover forever, I had it on like 3 notebooks back in high school.
I have this mag and connections to make the reprint possible.
I searched all over the web for a copy of the posters originally printed, but came up with nothing.
If theres a link out there somewhere to get a poster/print let me know.
If theres no link out there I suppose I’ll go ahead and make some up – If you want a copy you can send me a line arichardson20@gmail.com
funny, i kept this mag…colour me impressed!!!
Still a great pic today. The article was interesting as well. I remember reading about how Black Thought was shocked that Rakim knew who he was and gave him some dap. Why didn’t you scan the whole magazine and save me some time in the future?
Wonder if XXL is looking to repost the picture. I really would love to get that joint.
Yeah that’d be great to get enlarged for a mural or some shit. XXL get on your job.
I still have this copy of XXL in MINT condition my magazine collection is of the meter
When XXL dropped that issue they sold posters of the cover for a limited time….prolly have to go to Egay to find it now…it is about 2ft tall by 4ft wide…like that old school Jordan “Wings” poster….
I was there the day this picture was taken, and believe me, it was a wonderful experience. Since next month is the tenth anniversary, I might post something on my blog. Thanks for the memories…
XXL is still selling the poster here: http://www.xxlmag.com/contests/0908.xxl-hiphop-history/form.php
