This isn’t new… but it never gets old. That is, if you’re like me and have an affinity for vinyl so dusty it makes you cough.
“Yacht Rock” was a Channel 101 webisode series following a fictionalized Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins as they relive the stories behind their greatest hits. In the above episode, Michael meets a young Warren G, and history is made.
I tend to pull a lot of yacht rock on my crate digging outings. I’m talking grocery store music. CVS soul. Rite-Aid funk. Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Player – these are the distant cousins of Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly and even Teddy Pendergrass.
So kick up your flip-flops, grab yourself a Mojito and enjoy the smooth grooves. I give you three of my favorites…
Eagles – One of These Nights

“That’s gonna be some good ass banana bread!”
eagles…doobies….hall & oates…
thats my shit
hall & oates
To this day I never understand why more than just De La Soul has sampled that “No Can Do” beat., and the Beastie Boys with the “Those Shoes” Eagles sample. The only thing I can figure out is clearance, but I know for a fact Hall & Oates will let it go to the right artist. I don’t know about the Eagles, though. One thing’s for sure: Both them shits is fire. For real.
P.S… Ever mixed MiJack’s “Billie Jean” with “No Can Do?” It’s the straight panty dropper at the weddings and bar-miztvahs, man. Seriously.
CVS soul. Rite-Aid funk.
lol.
how true… throw a lil’ Fleetwood Mac in there for good measure while you’re at it.
good shit.
Okay, one (or more) more tip because I’m feeling generous (drunk) tonight: Joe Jackson (Steppin’ Out), Steely Dan (Peg), and The Police (just because Puffy and Cam’Ron did it doesn’t mean Sting ain’t got some more breaks out there for you. Trust me, he does).
No lie, I copped The Best Of Hall & Oates (and Foreigner) on vinyl a few weeks ago lol.
FM by Steely Dan= the shit

Whatup, OED! Thanks for the love yesterday… hahaha hilarious too.
Yeah though, huh? I can’t walk down a pharmacy aisle without getting my best lil Michael McDonald impression on at some point. Doobie Bros. if I’m lucky, a Motown cover if they’re trying to punish me.
Gotty… I’m signing “did you ever know that you’re my hero” over here. Foreigner?? Hot Blooded?? We can TALK.
signing = singing
but it’d be a whole lot sweeter if I was sign-language-ing it.
There’s a lull in this DC show. Yah Month B There
There’s a lull in this DC show. Yah Mo B There
I’m not that drunk that I misspell shit. Put that on my damn BlackBerry
I just came here to see Blu and Exile. They rocked it.
what up, LC… (hey baby-that was private talk)
TEEF, DAMN YOU!
prolly a dope ass show.
I swear I could listen to the joints all damn day…ok, truthfully about 3 hours before I tried to slit my wrists with a plastic spoon.
can the dj also play a lil’
Phil Collins, Elton John, and a couple of Doors tracks for me…
Sir G, Hall & Oates gotta be the most soulful “blue-eyed soul” group ever…I Can’t Go For That -IN MY MIND- was an early hip-hop song…..”Sarah Smile”….Whaaaat?!? Dopeness.
Yacht Rock is my shit though. I’d rather listen to that than what’s on stage right now. Phonte’s renditions of classic yacht rock and pop songs are fresh.
the joints = these joints
Wajeed & Kev Brown are conversatin’ right in front of me. But I don’t know them niggas, so whatever…lol. And some dude got “I Deed It” in black letters on the back of his orange shirt. Balding lite-brite dude.
u gotta go up an tell him ‘u da best main’
OED, you ain’t missin’ much. ‘Sides Blu & Exile, the energy here has been kinda lame. Even 10 Cane, Patron, and Red Stripe hasn’t enhanced shit over here for me. I’m thinking about Yumm’s Carry Out chicken waings with extra Mambo Sauce right about now. Yeah, if it was all that here my BlackBerry would be in my pocket.
The OKP Boho Clique is in full effect
Invincible just rocked it. Ol’ girl can really rap.
workin on a fri night sucks donkey dick.
im out
I dont know, but
“We’re Not Alone” is the shit.

Im drunk as fuck listenin to ‘hard knock vol.2′, and i know every freakin word…’u want me to be in your show, huh…
Before Steely Dan’s Aja was posted here I never bothered to give it a real listen…back in the day it was just that crazy music my folks would play to make me laugh, “You were high” & “take [Drink] your big black cow and get outta here” was the only part of the song I understood.
But that Decon Blues is on that next ish, and in my rotation
_Drink scotch whisky, all night long, and die behind the wheel.
_They got a name for the winners in the world. I want a name when I lose.
_They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, call me Deacon Blues.
