Words By Malik V.
Though The Firm was hyped up to be a super group of MC’s, they turned out to be a disappointment after sounding perfect on paper as a group of lyricists taking full advantage of the Mafioso theme of the late 90′s. Nas, AZ, Foxy, and Nature gave us “The Album”, their only release as a group, and though they didn’t exactly create their place in hip-hop history, they did bless us with a track that had it all: “Phone Tap.”
In terms of a bangin’ beat, lyrics, delivery, and concept, “Phone Tap” was the perfect package. The beat, by none other than Dr. Dre, who also laid down the hook, is hypnotizing with its somber-sounding loop and drums, but not quite enticing enough to divert the listener’s attention from Nas and AZ. Highlighting Dre’s style, the beat is simple, and provides the perfect platform for two MC’s who know how to feed off of each other.
The concept is pretty simple: two thugs executing a scheme, carrying on a phone conversation, who suspect that they’re being bugged by the feds. Its’ execution was flawless. Nas and AZ’s raps sound like they’re speaking through a phone, with crackling sound effects throughout. Nas and AZ spit about their predicament and their whereabouts, and in between, Dr. Dre comes in with the chorus, playing the role of the cop: (“We got your phone tapped/ What you gon’ do?/Cuz sooner or later, we’ll have your whole crew”). While Nas and AZ never actually confirm their suspicions, they make them well known: (I feel awful speakin’/ For some reason/ Feel the phone’s tapped).
The beauty of “Phone Tap” is that it gives us both sides of the story, and presents them vividly. We can imagine Nas and AZ staring out the window, looking for cops, and talking to each other on a rainy and gloomy day. We can also picture the evil smile Dre would get as he hears two G’s setting themselves up for getting knocked. We feel a genuine sense of sympathy for Nas and AZ, who are digging their own graves and going against their gut by talking, and the mellow and foreboding beat only highlights that feeling. As far as concept tracks go, “Phone Tap” has be high one of the best, as a vivid story is told through effects, lyrics, and a beat.

Give us a Nas, AZ, Dre reunion!
people hate this album, but i always loved it. theres alotta bangers on it. dont 4get, Nature makes a quick appearance on his track too.

phone tap, desperados, and im leaving are the only 3 songs from this album that get any play from me…
Nature – Fives Minutes To Flush
Desperados
Too many on this album IMO. It had it’s share of fluff that was a part of the times. But still solid shit that’s listenable today.
Great song. Reminds me of season 1 of The Wire.
i liked all those mentioned, plus bust ya guns and im leavin.
The Firm’s album was dope… it just had way too much hype. When it missed the mark that was set for it, then people started to say it sucked. Bullshit. I’m gonna bump that shit all day tomorrow.
Thanks Malik
the dopest part of The Firm joint was the cassette. It was packaged like a cigarette box. (It’s always the little things lol)
The album was cool in spots, but it didn’t have to much shelf life.
I think at the time Cormega being “replaced” for Nature bugged me a little. Not that Nature wasn’t dope, I just wanted to hear Mega up in the mix.
Nah, The Firm has its place in my books…
but just never followed thru.
and hell to the yeah that song was on fire !!!
true indeed.
word up to the cigarette packaging. that shit was dope.
This joint had heat! I have to disagree wit ya’ll this joint was heat. It didn’t live up to the hype, but I bumped the hell outta this joint. The cigarette box was ill. Not a classic, but what joints weren’t listenable on this album? Nowadays, even my favorite joints have songs that are soooo corny (i.e. Skillz’ “Yeah Ya Know It”)
that whole album was not handled well… with better management and not as much controversy with the label and contracts and all that, the firm might very well have been the gold standard in hip-hop…
I might go for the wackness sometimes, but I take that first joint “Firm Fiasco” with me. That’s that shit you put on with some old friends when it’s rainin and you’re blazin reminiscin bout some old jux yall did in high school or somethin.
Apropos: Good lookin’ out on the GTA IV soundtrack Wit. I was actually really feeling the Jazz Nation and Fusion FM stations but never figured I would pony up for that shit. Gratsi.

@Wit – E….thanks man, I tried it yet again and it worked (my bad!) also thanks for the password joint!!
nas and az have a wonderful chemistry together, with a reputation of being two of the most prolific lyricists to ever grace the face of hip hop…phone tap displayed all of that and more…i actually heard this song the last time it was on stray shots and have been bangin it since then…i’ve bought albums by both of them and i am waiting to hear the news of a collabo album between the two…but till then (if it ever happens)…i’ll be bumping phone tap
firm fiaso
phone tap
executive decision
desperados
those were prolly my fave. it was a solid album IMO…
and how can you not love canibus goin in on desperados
“i re-arrange your rib cage like a 12 gauge at close range, and change the position of your frame…”
To Gotty
nature did have 4 lines
“Yo son some other cats tried to ruin our plans
Sendin two decoy bitches with pictures of you and your man
Askin your whereabouts – I gave ‘em no leads
For all the nigga know them hoes f**k with police”
but as good as they were i think it was alright that it wasnt mentioned in the post…cuz in the grand scheme of things az and nas were the ones that gave life to the song
