It’s usually never a good idea to tell the world the impact your album will make before it’s released, let alone even made. Nevertheless, Nas has made a habit of this dating back to 2006 when he originally wanted to call his album Nigga, before giving in to Def Jam brass and settling on Hip Hop Is Dead. Never one to back down, Nas went right back in the studio to work on what else? Nigger. Wanting to create awareness and conversation on the word, yet this time the label seemed to be on board —until it was announced the album would go untitled and people began hollering publicity stunt. Is Nas a sell out for changing the title or did he stick to his intended vision by leaving the album nameless? While that issue may never be resolved, Nas is partly successful in delivering what he set out to do.
From the brooding opening piano loop on “Queens Get The Money” to the uplifting snare snaps on “Black President,” Nas channels his inner Walt Whitman as he explores the Black Diaspora in America. Lyrically Nas is dense as London fog as he crams historical references, terms, and names throughout the album as he takes us from the days of Willie Lynch to Willie Hutch to Barack Obama. On “You Can’t Stop Us Now,” Nas reflects on both the overt and covert setbacks African Americans have faced and overcome. “Make The World Go Round” addresses the respect/fear/hatred between Blacks and Caucasians. He does make a slight misstep on “We Are Not Alone,” as he reverts back to Nastradamus conspiracy theories, but jumps back on course for “Louis Farrakhan” “Untitled,” where he ponders if he’ll too have to die for his message to be heard.
Sonically, the mood of the album is sparse and somber as sweeping minor piano chords are prevalent throughout. They are effective in keeping you tuned in to what’s being said, but the overall tempo begins to drag and songs blur together. “Sly Fox,” is one exception however, as Nas berates Fox News and the media in general. The frenetic guitar struts provide a much needed jolt in the middle of the album. Guitars once again pick up the pace on “Fried Chicken” as Nas and Busta Rhymes profess their love for the unhealthy delicacy over a honky-tonk piano loop and lively bass line.
Despite referring to his self as a revolutionary throughout the album, Nas never proposes any solutions for the issues that he brings up. Instead of a call to arms, he delivered a Black State of the Union Address. The closest he ever gets is on “Hero,” when he stops presenting the issues long enough to actually provide a song to inspire listeners. Over a Polow Da Don backdrop that is equal parts HBCU halftime show as is it futuristic space chase, he reflects on his own journey in life that’s brought him where he is today. In the last verse he wisely makes the title controversy bigger than himself as he asks what the next generation will learn from this when it’s time for them to express their views.
Overall, this album sums up everything we’ve come to know Nas to be: lyrically and conceptually great, while lacking the ability to match production with his words to create that musical equinox that’s irrefutable to all. Not to say the beats are atrocious, outside of “Make The World Go Round,” but they do make listening a chore at times instead of keeping the listener engaged. Lyrically though, his wordplay and delivery are sharp as ever as if all the attention to the title made Nas put extra effort and focus into his words. Now that he’s thoroughly laid the issues on the table, (several songs revisit the same topic i.e. “Testify” and “Y’all My Niggas”) we’re just waiting for him to tell us what the next step is.

Nas-Nas-Nas-Nas!

Oh yeah, great review. I was also hoping for a 4.5. Everyone that I have talked to says this is the best album of ’08, and can’t take it off repeat. My boy from work told me that he woke up early yesterday and just to listen to it in his living room.
^ Nice. Looks dope homey!

@ LETSO

Also, for everyone whose hailed it, I can count alot of people who were dissapointed by it as well.
I’m ready to check out some other reviews though.
N*gger/Untitled Album:
4 cigs [.......*...] 5 cigs
Somewhere in there IMO…
That HBCU/Hero line was great.
Nice review.
“Queens…” & “Nigger” = got me zoned out. Love’em both.
4.5 would be shooting this one way too high tho.
i dunno…i’d give this 5 cigs…i think it was the best concept album i’d ever heard, and i think its gonna be regarded as a classic a few years down the road…just like it was written…it was by far the most focused album i’ve heard
i think some of yall have gotten too used to hearing bullshit so ur givin this a tad too much praise…i agree its a banger and betta than most things comin out lately, BUUUUUUUT, the beats are pretty weak and i think that takes away from the album as a whole- i woulda gave it a 3.5

Concept album? Where? 5 Cigs?
I think people get caught up in the whole legend of Nas and his position in Hip-Hop, like he can do whatever and have immunity.
Lyrically and conceptually, Nas holds it down, just about every outing. But this isn’t Dr. Cornell West’s honors banquet, you gotta make music that makes a deep impact. And with some of his production selections of every album post-God’s Son, some of the songs just come out good opposed to being great.
This album has some poor sequencing as well. “America” after “Hero” and “Testify” after “Sly Fox” are nothing but standstills in momentum. “We’re Not Alone” could have been left on the cutting room floor for the more aggressive “Cops Keep Firing.” I mean Nas will probably always be relevant, but he shortchanges his own self when he doesn’t make the most of his studio time. This album can’t see Stillmatic or in terms of memorabilia. Where’s the “Made You Looks,” “One Mics” and “I Cans” at??? He hits the mark with “Hero” and some of y’all diss the shit which I cannot understand.
Let it marinate. It’s a good album. But not one of the best you’ve ever heard. Lets be real.
Where’s the “Made You Looks,” “One Mics” and “I Cans” at???
==============================================
OK, I can see “Made You Look” and “One Mic.” But “I Can”? I don’t think those belong in the same category.
What’s wrong with “I Can?” Because it had kids on the chorus?
It did fairly well on the radio as it was pretty catchy but still dropped knowledge the youth like: As cute as can be/up in the club with fake ID/careful ‘fore you meet a man with HIV
I agree w/ you for the most part, Señor Gaucho (that’s TC to the rest of ya). That “Like Me” joint he left off bangs, and “Cops Keep Firing” woulda been a very nice addition as well.
My one major flaw w/ the album is not the beats throughout the album, but the fact that it lacks that ONE or two songs with major NUTS, and by that I mean less cerebral, and more “Kick In The Door”… The subject matter calls for a little bit of both, don’t cha think.
The lack of a definitive “banger” isn’t the worst thing though. It has me liking a different song every week, so I think it for that reason, it will prolly be an album that ages well as the months and years pass.
http://current.com/items/89116566_taxi_driver_gets_eight_years_10_strokes_for_3_ounces_of_pot
not a classic but i think down the line people will examine it and see it for what it is…people dont give soco-political music the same opportunities as other forms. the beats arent all weak but now what u expect in an era of Kanye and snap…as for as conspiracy theories…folks thought the Watergate scandal, IRan-contra and the northwood files were wild speculations…all a conspiracy needs is two people not telling a third…
controversial disc… so a contr’ review iz necessary.
plus i think that : nas can’t make bad ish but he can make very good ish with weak productions (weak in the sense of ain’t real hot bangaz, impactz… like God U A Gun or Nas Is Like, …) cuz musically in this album. Nas wanted musicality. in a bigger sense.
to illustrate his words. but an anti review can see the day maybe one of yall. but MZ review izgood.
WE NEED like killer mike itw, a Nas itw about his N!ggrr album.
peace&bye

bill danze ft. preacher – ima kill ya
Nas = Ken Griffey Jr. of rap
^ Strong statement OED
I keep listening… and listening…. and listening, but I stand by the 4 cigs still.
With the truth that was spoken on Association, it should’ve made the album!!! Middle Finger (Cops Keep Firing), Esco Lets Go, or even War Is Necessary were all bangerz (imo) that didn’t make the album. With all those omitted, I’m running with the 4 cigz.
True that, DH, but there’s quite a few parallels:
Both “The Natural” when they came on the scene./accolades galore
Projected by many/most to achieve GOAT status w/no problem
stumbles (injuries) mid-career/others stole a little of their initial shine
still make it look/do it easy in the “later years”, albeit w/ a little less of the “umph!” and “wow” that categorized them early on
both steady-to-great as they head towards “legend” status
I don’t care what crap anyone has to say about Nas-critics,haters…et.c. I believe he follows through as much as is allowed and out of his step to educate youth and the much ignorant others….In him I see what I see in Tupac’s lyrics(when speaking about rebeliousness). I don’t mean to compare these rappers side by side. My point is to emphasize the effort Nas has put into his album make his views heard and inspire action among others..
I f people hate the controversy Nas seems to stir, then they probably would do better by not paying attention to him. They are the same people who listen, or buy his music anyway!
I’m just telling it how it is. If you have a problem….say something!
That Griffey/Nas comparison is spot on: Maybe that’s why they’re my two favorites.

Court: Bush can order indefinite detentions
But appeals panel says prisoner can challenge action
By ADAM LIPTAK
New York Times
WASHINGTON — President Bush has the legal power to order the indefinite military detentions of civilians captured in the United States, the federal appeals court in Richmond, Va, ruled on Tuesday in a fractured 5-4 decision.
But a second, overlapping 5-4 majority of the court, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Ali al-Marri, a citizen of Qatar now in military custody in Charleston, S.C, must be given an additional opportunity to challenge his detention in federal court there
An earlier court proceeding, in which the government had presented only a sworn statement from a defense intelligence official, was inadequate, the second majority ruled Administration victory. The decision was a victory for the Bush administration, which had maintained that a 2001 congressional authorization to use military force after the Sept 11 attacks granted the president the power to detain people living in the United States
The court effectively reversed a divided three-judge panel of its own members, which ruled last year that the government lacked the power to detain civilians legally in the United States as enemy combatants
That panel ordered the government either to charge Marri or to release him
The case is likely to reach the Supreme Court
How helpful the decision will be to Marri remains to be seen, as the majority that granted him some relief was notably vague about what the new court proceeding should look like. In that respect, Tuesday’s decision resembled the June decision from the U.S Supreme Court granting habeas corpus rights to prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay
Called an enemy combatant, Marri is the only person on the U.S mainland known to be held as an enemy combatant
The government contended, in a declaration from the defense intelligence official, Jeffrey Rapp, that Marri was a Qaida sleeper agent sent to the United States to commit mass murder and disrupt the banking system
Marri was arrested on Dec.12, 2001, in Peoria, Ill, where he was living with his family and studying computer science
He was charged with credit-card fraud and lying to federal agents, and was on the verge of a trial on those charges when he was moved to military detention in 2003
Brian Roehrkasse, a Justice Department spokesman, said the decision properly recognized “the president’s authority to capture and detain al-Qaida agents who, like the 9/11 hijackers, come to this country to commit or facilitate warlike acts against American civilians”
Roehrkasse added that while the department believed that Marri “had already received all the process he was due,” its lawyers were “studying the court’s decision and will respond to Marri’s contentions” before the trial judge
‘Deeply disturbing’
Jonathan Hafetz, a lawyer for Marri with the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, called the 4th Circuit’s decision deeply disturbing
“This decision means the president can pick up any person in the country — citizen or legal resident — and lock them up for years without the most basic safeguard in the Constitution, the right to a criminal trial,” Hafetz said
The 216-page decision included seven opinions, none of which commanded a majority
@ Pago, that links from my server and should be ALOT faster than any of the free hosting sites, it usually only takes about 2-3 min to download a tape off it. there might be alotta people tryin to download now, try again a lil lata an if its still not workin for u i will get it to u anotha way.
@ OED
Not sure if I could’ve put it better myself. Excellent comparison.
@ MZ
Forgot to congratulate you on the excellent review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album and thats all that matters to me…take what ever stance you want about nas’s title but he fucking delivered on this album.
Who said anything about the title? We’re talking music here…
what annoys me is the word nigger is all over mainstream tv right now….cnn, the view…and nobody is giving nas credit for bringing this to the limelight again
jaja @ ^^
i saw a clip on the bitches on the view discussin the word and 1 of them started cryin an shit, it was pretty funny.
@Wit-E :yeah makes sense. I’ll try again later.
I was hoping/campaigning for 5 cigs, but honestly, “Untitled” fell a lil bit short. I agree with the above comments, the album is lacking 1 or 2 “bangers” which would have added some needed “umpf” to an otherwise superior, albeit cerebral album. Still, this is another classic “Nas” album & is my #1 candidate for album of the year (so far).
And Junior ain’t did shit to be compared to Nas.
I’d say 5 Cigs But hey, not my review.
Everything that you said in this review is the same conversation that I had with a fellow DJ and we both agreed on lacking in production and amazing with the content but not in entirety…
@ Amp
Junior’s right at 600 HR’s with a myriad of injuries that have kept him out (several/multiple) essentially whole seasons at a time.
He’s not what he may have been (The argument w/ Nas is that he could be much better w/ different beat selections), but he’s still on the HOF short list.
He’s done plenty, mayne.
I noticed you campaining the last two weeks Amp and chuckling the entire time.
Especially when you did it yesterday in my Killer Mike review.
I just had to hold my tongue.
oh yeah: Griffey Jr. = Nas. All the way down to their fathers who acheieved success in their right while putting their children in the family business.
Just to expound (at work, sorry), there was hardly any mention of Bonds, and NO talk of McGuire, Sosa, A-Rod, or any of ‘em when Griff was still young and more inportantly, injury-free.
It took him taking a step backwards for any of these cats to get any shine.
to TC
i respect your opinion but i have some things to add…for one this definitely was a concept album, with nas talking about the n word and whatnot…but it was also deeper than that…i thought the album was a physical manifestation of the concept of free speech, especially with tracks like america, sly fox, and n.i.g.g.e.r…
also i thought this was lyrically just as good as stillmatic, and i thought it also has one element that stillmatic didnt have, which is an overall focus that pertains to the entire album in its entirety. from the cover, to the liner notes, to the actual music, this album is one piece of art representing the voice of the youth
Nas = ARod
Maybe a better comparison if you want to base it off the amount of talent they possess.
Tho the Ken Griff was just as good but whereas Griff was injured and watching A-Rod has been there still swinging and for the most part doing it.. but still not making the top of the mountain the way we all think he should.
maybe fthe first time on tss, but i say : new review iz necessary. someone ain’t really agree, see other things. lol @ darius “but hey, not my review” …
peace
when nas is on features or a soundtrack
he goes hard, still true, plus banga. and that is really a good comportment. he doesn’t keep his best joints/verses for him. cuz all time is ish is good.
when he’s weak it’s better than 90% …
I dig the album… I went out and copped it, cause I support real hip hop…
But I can’t help playing the Nas/Green Lantern “Nigger Tapes” mix. Its so full of energy! Lyrically as well as production-wise…
I wish the album had a little more energy in the actual music… but overall, it’s a great album.
That’s interesting what the review says about Nas not proposing a solution. That right there is something that a lot of our concious black brothers and sisters lack. We have the drive, the ambition, the right mindstate, the intellect, and the understanding of this society that we live in, but yet we have no long term solutions. So everybody talks about what’s wrong, but doesn’t stop the cycle, doesn’t ACT on it…
Thanks for the Information, thanks for the useful Post. I will come back soon , Great information about actors: castings
