He’s come a long way since his humble beginnings on the Southside of Chicago. Along the way, we’ve watched him evolve as an entertainer, an artist & as a man. From Stoney Island to now, he’s made his share of good music along the way.
Take a peek @ his discog.

Common – Thisisme Then (The Best Of Common)

* looks around *
First?
Baha Men>>>>Common
Like Water for Choclate is my personal fave
then One Day It’ll Make Sense
Be & Finding Forever are almost the same.
So he’s dropping two albums or is Wikipedia slipping on their update game? Lol.
ask Miss Info (a Chi native) about how Com used to reek of beer back in the day…lol
*looking around for my one day record*
i’m with M.Z. on ranking those Com albums…
2000: Like Water for Chocolate
2005: Be
1994: Resurrection
1997: One Day It’ll All Make Sense
2007: Finding Forever
2002: Electric Circus
1992: Can I Borrow a Dollar?
waitaminute…
M.Z., you ain’t mention Resurrection…hmmm
put that after ODIAMS….before Be & FF
1. Resurrection – I told TC earlier that yes, musically, Be might be better. But Be has lulls for me whereas Resurrection doesn’t. Plus, in terms of growth, this is where Com & No I.D. finally got it right.
2. Be – Kanye propelled Lonnie Lynn to another level w/his soundscapes.
3. One Day — Stolen Moments trilogy. The choice features (LBoogie AND Cee-Lo?) End story.
4. Like Water
5. Finding Forever – Good but this one won’t have as much staying power as One Day. Could’ve nudged out LW…but enh.
6. Can I Borrow – Yeah, and what? Soul By The Pound was enough boom-bap to give this one pull over…
7. Electric Circus – A lot of people slept on this one but it had it’s share of good songs. As a unit, it was kinda weaksauce though. “Heaven Somewhere” was worth the price of admission though.
Like Water for Chocolate is my personal favorite, with Resurrection not too far behind…but they’re totally different albums so it’s hard to really say one is better than the other
I actually like FF more than Be…it seems to be a little more cohesive but it does have striking similarities…I like water for chocolate better than be but not better than finding forever.
that song black maybe never gets old to me.
a Common AND Cube post within hours of each other…haha
^^^ good point Teef…Gotty’s tryna stir the old beef up again
^ actually…
there are some that allege that Cube took a shot at Com at the end of “Gansgta Rap Made Me Do It”
I dunno though

1) One Day It’ll All Make Sense – That song “Hungry” may have been short but it KILLED most other dudes whole albums. I love “One Too Many” also.
2) Like Water For Chocolate – Common came back on a whole new vibe with this project. The Soulquarians at their finest fo’sho.
3) Be – Why state the obvious??? After the abyssmal “Electric Circus” Yeezey put Com back on the path to making G.O.O.D music (pun fucking intended!!!).
4) Finding Forever – One of the best of 2007!!! This album had so many gems beyond the singles that we already heard. Yeezey and Com struck gold once again.
5) Ressurection – Com’s emergence from a “street” emcee to more of a “conscious” emcee (while still retaining his street edge, sort of a mixture of both). You can definitely see Common’s growth with this LP, both as an artist and as a man.
I’m convinced Petey’s got some Mexican in him
Petey, you stay doing the shit the rest of us don’t wanna do
editing Yayo out of his own shit, transcribing Eii Porter AND Reggie Noble skits….can’t find that shit at ohhla.com

Okay…LOVE Common…but…
He’s way to into the ladies…
Be could’ve been a classic for anybody with ears, but he caters too much to the fairer sex a little too much…
Like Water for Chocolate was fucking awesome because he spit his shit without trying so hard…
I wish Common would forget he had a penis. If he did, he would be one of the best doing it right now.
ET you are correct.
teef check out this site Im working on
http://www.the-chill-spot.com
the front page is still under construction but the forum is crackin…predominantly west coast. this forum is actually a spin off of the now defunct wcrydaz that was covered here at tss around this time last year.
it just opened a few weeks ago
1. Be – I mean it took Rashid to a level where everybody took notice. Didn’t hurt that the album was incredible. (4.5 Cigs)
2. Finding Forever – Is the format similar to Be? Why yes. But how the hell is that a bad thing? I think this trumps my next two because it has biteeee while other ones keep it organic. More of a balance. And it’s got more hits. (4 Cigs)
3. Like Water For Chocolate – Common’s favorite album and the most “Common-esque” album. It’s a Hip-Hop’s purists wet dream, but the range on it does have limits. (4 Cigs)
4. One Day It’ll All Make Sense – His first official, well rounded album but the songs weren’t as strong to take him that level. Lotta spittin’, not a whole lotta structure outside of the “Stolen Moments” and “Retrospect For Life.” I wonder if he still likes “G.O.D.” Still dope product. (4 Cigs)
5. Resurrection – Is the album’s title accurate? Why of course. But this album gets monotonous more than a little bit. It’s another one of them albums that seriously speak to die-hards of this sector of Hip-Hop but it doesn’t offer too much variety. Classic, never. Dope, forever. (3.5 Cigs)
6. Electric Circus – If you listen straight through, you’re asking for it, but this did have a handful of keepers on here. “Come Close” put everything LL did in 2K to shame and for you all-music heads out there, listen to the lyrics on “I Am Music” and tell me he didn’t get sly wit’ it. But that “New Wave” shit sound like he’s being chased down a neverending corridor in a cartoon, and Pharrell made “I Got Right Ta” on a trailer with a straw in his mouth. (3 Cigs)
7. Dollar Menu – This shit’s ass. And I don’t care what no one says, he knew better. He just wanted to see if he could get over. (2.5 Cigs)
Damn Sherm
you did what I set out to do, but never finished with all those a millis.
As for Ressurection, I guess I put before Be as well. But it’s been awhile hearing it & my memory isn’t as good as ya’lls when it comes to these kinds of things.
@ Petey, thats 1 of my fav Redman songs/videos
http://www.youtube.com/v/C3b4sH7JhgA
i can’t take credit for that – dj noodlez made the tape i just figured i’d put it up for yall
Be – (Before Erykah) Dopest… wish he threw one more “Corner” type joint on there, but what’cha gon’ do?
Like Water – Some of Dilla’s best work & Com was there to meet him in the middle
Ressurection – HER, Ressurection, Citrus fruits (Watermelon, Orange Pineapple Juice)
Finding Forever – Not a bad thing that it sounded similar to Be, so why not just play Be?
One Day – way too color by numbers…mushy…actually liked what he was trying to do, but thought the joint w/ Lauryn was to feminino. Some of that “sensitivity” seemed a little too contrived to me.
Electric Circus
Can I Borrow A Dollar
If TC flips Finding Forever and Like Water For Chocolate, I’ll agree with his list.
I would also like to say that I’m a proud owner of Can I Borrow a Dollar?. lol
One Day It Will All Make Sense is Com’s most slept on album hands down.
Last, but not least, … for all you fakers, other than “Come Close”, “Electric Wire Hustle Flower”, and “Aquarius”… Electric Circus is trash. Don’t try to act like ya’ll up on something that the rest of us ain’t. I’mma die-hard Com Sense fan, and even I’ll admit that the “Badu-era” Common was on some other shit.
Don’t forget that joint “Hot” on Electric Circus, Doug.
TC’s delusional. Res is classic.
D.Howser–yup One Day is snoozed on. Shante Savage was dope. Too bad Chante Moore was hot at the same time so savage got the “bootleg Moore” label.
If you took the best of Be and FF you’d have a top five, no contest.
com got slept on in chi tho. then again everybody outside of ye got slept on till they left. Chicago radio is just beyond corrupt, beyond segregated by race, side (southside vs. westside) and it’s also segregated by genre–the stations love white techno artists but marginalize black house/techno djs…
they luv “alternative” (liz phair, smashing pumpkins and that type of stuff)…
all the clubs in chicago are on the north side and owned by white folks catering to white kids so you’ve gotta get those clubs on your side if you wanna get known.
my point is it’s so difficult for chicago artists to have a “grassroots” movement because you’ve gotta go thru so much BS.
I’m like 100% with you TeeSea, on your list. “Be” is my ish. Still listen to it like The Blueprint.
im ova here bumpin some old naughty by nature…
treach was vicious on the mic….
i 4got how many classic tracks they’ve made…
^^^ That first Naughty was a beast.

Resurrection
Be / Finding Forever
One Day /Can I Borrow
Electric Circus
*strikes a Thinker pose*
Yeah, that seems about right.
Never was a huge fan of Common, but “Be” is a classic. Dude always came off a lil pretentious to Me & His more conscious persona was a complete 180 from His beer guzzling schtick on “One Day…”
^I concur. Be rules, and Like Water for Chocolate is a tight album, but with both he and Talib the music seems too self-conscious about being ‘smart’ hip-hop to really resonate with me.
Plus, fuck ‘Peace, Love, & Gap.’
Com’s Gap ad was cute. y’all hatin’. lol!
Tho L’s Gap ad was the best. snuck in the fubu plug and Gap didn’t realize he was plugging another product on their dime–still one of the illest moves in hiphop. hh marketing at least.
fy’all pointed out a big issue i’ve always had with conscious emcees: what’s it rooted in.
is conscious rhyme just another way for self-doubting cats to say i’m doper than you? is it all endless bars of “look, i can reference Che on beat and you can’t!” “I read more communist/conspiracy blogs than you!” “i got my black history down pat more than you!”
that’s one reason i’m digging a lot of christian emcees more and more because at least their vibe’s rooted in a specific message/idea that’s bigger than “i think i’m more positive than the next guy… for no real reason at all.”

‘Untitled’ album in stores, 15th July !!! RAW
NOOOOOOOO, why did you have to post something about common….
this is killing me, i bought tickets for a concert tomorrow night (8 july), but the concert was canceled, cauz they didn’t sold enough tickets, so i want to buy the tickets from the concert a day later, but that one was sold out…
there is properly a curse on Common for me, cauz last time i bought tickets to see him, it was the kanye concert but that one got canceled cauz Mama West past away..
luckily last friday Lupe Fiasco didn’t got canceled and i saw a part from the Cool Kids, but it was to late to watch the whole concert, cauz they started on 1AM and we had to drive for more then a hour.. but Lupe was just crazy!! That was really a good show!!
and i hope, that 1 day, i can see common live…. but till now, its just a dream….
i wonder if anyone who ranks “Resurrection” way down their Common preference list was actually listening to hip-hop back then, because back then it was ALL about either Resurrection or Illmatic, lyrically.
…just like the people who think TFA was the best Roots album ever….smh at all that…must just be a new generation that wasn’t there…
…like water for chocolate is my #1.
that album alone put me on to fela and femi kuti.
thank you common.
like water for chocolate is one of the dopest albums of all time IMO. Dilla and the soulquarians tore it up especially on “heat” with a healthy dilla on the chorus
1. Be
The marriage of Kanye’s genius soundscapes mixed with Common’s rejuvenated passion for rhyme, propelled this album as his best so far. (4.5 cigs)
2. Resurrection
I co-sign Mothra. It’s interesting to see a few of you put this so low on the list. I’m catching the same feelings when I heard criticisms about Biggie’s discography being small disqualifying him from GOAT status. SMH. This is a classic. (4.5)
3. Finding Forever
Newest ish. So of course it resonates a little louder. Anything remotely similar to Be is of course going to be compared to it, especially since it was the next album out, kinda unfairly I think. Another front to back. Pop’s kills it once again at the end. (4)
4. Like Water For Chocolate
Whenever I introduce Common to virgin ears (read: That friend who “Doesn’t listen to/like hip-hop/rap”), this is the first album I tell them to listen to. “Geto Heaven” alone, amazing. Dilla’s footprint is evident. Soulquarians went off. Just a great album overall. (4)
5. One Day… / Can I Borrow.. (tie)
It sucks to catagorize these two as the bread between the Resurrection sandwich. To me “One day…” was like the fire extinguisher to “The Bitch In Yoo.” Still both good albums, with standout tracks but no front to back situations, but great features.(3.5)
6. Electric Circus
The whipping boy album of the library right?
I felt this album got snowballed in early negativity, and never really got a chance to be thoroughly enjoyed. Come Close is one of the greatest hip-hop love songs of all time. If you’ve overlooked EC in the past go back and give it another chance. (3)
Common is a Top 10 of ALL TIME. Lets not get it twisted.
Magic Johnson beat AIDS
Shit! every album dude came out wit is the shit ! –wit “Electric Circus” “Like water for Chocolate” and “Be ” being ranked as the most high! in my opinion! not to mention all of the features, remixes and sountrack songs he’s had! just listen to the entire collection and you can see that no one else can match his style. and not many in the hip-hop has had such accomplishments and growth!

juste came out hov’ show in paris, common did the first part & killed it like everytime… seems like he was angry coz he throwed a lot of things on the floor including the drums used by the musician, & i remember last time i saw him on the kanye show he didnt made it
“Like Water For Chocolate” is the best damn album that Common ever made PERIOD!!!! (LOL)
