Words By David D.
I wish I could have paid for Wale’s Mixtape About Nothing.
Then, I’d be able to sue the brotha for false advertising.
Though there are a lot of “mixtape” cuts that allow Wale to just show how ill of an MC he is, he takes time to truly construct great conceptual masterpieces. Not the least of which is “The Kramer.” Wale creates a musical Babushka Doll in which the song begins with a very wide view analyzing the societal ramifications of using the “N word” then becoming more personal with each line.
Early lines like “Who gonna speak for us, who gonna plea for us/Who gonna be the new head N.I.C. for us/ Who gonna defend us when crooked police want us?/I’m just an insecure N-I-G er” offer glimpses into the fragile psyche of a man lost in the quagmire of modern day race relations.
The second verse peels of the outer layers and delves specifically into the way the word is used by his peers. “And (Master) P said that I should stop sayin nigga/but if I did what would be the difference…/ there’d still be niggas out there killin/there’d still be white people out to get us.” He repeats the word “still” to illuminate the fact that these arguments and contradictions about the word are keeping us from moving on to a resolution.
The song reaches its emotional peak when Wale takes us into the mind of a Black kid in an all White school of students who feel its okay to recite the “N word” that the rappers use in their songs.
The final scene in absolutely gripping as Wale paints a picture of a kid full of self-loathing. He has allowed the use of the word to get out of hand and hates himself for letting his White friends use it freely.
There are a bevy of topics related to the use of the “N Word” and far too many points of view to encapsulate every nuance of the word in only four minutes. However, Wale parses out some key points related to the controversy and thoroughly deconstructs the psychological trials associated with its uses.
My good folks, this is how a “Nigger” song should go.

Stack Bundles – Bundles Hot
RIP Stack Bundlez, he’s the only cat on the mixtape circuit who had extreme potential and skill. I’m still mad that he’s dead before he realized the success I believe awaited him.
this “put on dc” track was lame but im a firm believer that wale is the future of rap
mark my words. wale will be the new jay of the game.
mainstream appeal is just too much.
he’s like the intelligent version of wayne.
mixtape about nothing is not only better than carter 3 but it’s easily the best release of 2008 so far.
Rising Down>_____
I dig Wale but…
“mark my words. wale will be the new jay of the game”
Uh…highly doubtful
“mixtape about nothing is not only better than carter 3 but it’s easily the best release of 2008 so far.”
Easily? Nah, B.
maybe not easily.
rising down went hard body
Wale is ill, It took a while to get used to his voice though. The next Jay??? Not until he’s a few albums deep, heading up a few corporations, and grossing a 100 million or more.
Speaking of “Rising Down” why the fuck isn’t anybody speaking of it anymore???!!! It’s like it never existed!!!
mark my words. wale will be the new jay of the game.
he’s like the intelligent version of wayne.
——————————————-
You done sipped your kool-aid & the aggin next to you? lace your cult-Cortezs up real tight lol.
Is “Rising Down” a good album? Fa Sho.
Do I listen to it on a regular basis? Nope.
my hope is that he never becomes the next jay.
i hope that he just stays wale.
i am in love with Mixtape About Nothing. I would have bought it, and I haven’t bought a record in forever.
i think wale is insanely overrated – style over substance. his flow is meh, his voice is subpar. his lyrics might be on point but good rhymes can only go so far. oh and this “put on” dub is trash. i’m not tryin’ to hate, i wish him much success and i respect that he’s tryin to do things differently, i just think a lot of his shit is better in theory than in practice
Wale is cool, you just need to be in a certain mindset (mood) to listen to him. The first few times I listened to the mixtape about nothing, I was all over it. But after a few more listens it was time for something else.
But that’s the case with most music these days anyway.
It’s definately his window of opportunity now though, so I hope he makes the most of it.
i think wale is insanely overrated – style over substance.

Hmmm…sounds like someone else I know…
weezy?
word DAVID D, i just had this on in the car, and i was thinking about it when i logged on. good timing
the song is dope, definitely my favorite song on the album
being a white hiphop head, songs like this give me the craziest mixed emotions. i feel angry, guilty, black, super white, ignorant, empathetic, etc. makes me think hard about the way i carry myself. i guess thats the point. I have a feeling nas’s “untitled” wont really have me thinking like this, moreso hiding under my bed incase he runs in with a crew of crackerhaters accusing me of being a grand dragon.
wale did it … i hope nas takes notes … while i take tokes of the …
so glad you mentioned this track. its so well written, so impressive its amazing he didnt save it for a proper release. i was never a wale fan until i heard this tape but the kid comes correct. amazing…
WEEZY’S THE ONE!
New Lil Wayne Album Will be Year’s Biggest Debut, Targeted for 900k+
June 11, 2008
In Weezy we trust.
The music industry finally has something to shout about.
Thanks to an unprecedented pre-release blitz and the smash single, “Lollipop,” Lil Wayne’s eagerly awaited Cash Money/Universal Motown release Tha Carter III is on target to sell more than 900k albums this week, almost twice as much as the previous record-holder, Mariah Carey’s E=MC2, which debuted with 475k last April. That’s based on one-day sales reports from beleaguered music retailers grateful for a little hot fun in the summertime.
With brisk foot traffic across the country this Father’s Day weekend, there’s no telling how much highter Tha Carter III could go. Not bad for an album which leaked all over the web last week.
It’s the biggest debut week ever for Sylvia Rhone’s Universal Motown, topping Nelly’s total of 714k back in June ’02.
Slip N Slide/Atlantic Tampa rapper Plies’ Definition of Real, which includes guest appearances from Ne-Yo, J. Holiday, Keyshia Cole, Trey Songz, Jamie Foxx and The-Dream, looks to be in the 225-250k area. The prolific hip-hop artist is reportedly about to drop a second disc by the end of the year.
Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo’s band alter ego (with Shay Haley) N.E.R.D. come out with Seeing Sounds, their first album for Interscope, which will sell about 90k, give or take.
Rock crit and Louisville jam band acolytes My Morning Jacket are receiving big buzz for their latest on ATO, Evil Urges, which could do as much as 50k in first-week sales.
Alanis Morissette gets over the loss of boyfriend Ryan Reynolds to Scarlett Johansson with her new Maverick/Reprise album, Flavors of Entanglement, by consoling herself with 45-50k in sales.
Hitting retail on Tuesday is Coldplay’s Viva La Vida on Capitol, with EMI’s immediate future banking on its success.
Don’t feel too much pressure on yourself, Chris Martin.
The market was up 5% vs last week, down 14% vs same week last year and now down 11% year-to-date. We now return you to your regularly scheduled web-surfing
just listened to the mixtape with focus for the 2nd time today and this joint was def the one that stuck out. its a great album/mixtape. Him and Daytona’s mixtape gave me some good music the last week. As far as Wale, him and Blu are the only 2 new artists that I am consistently checking for nowadays.
Why isn’t The Hacksaw Jim Dugan or whatever you want to call it on teh mixtape. Pissed me off.
I think it’s funny how even when the shit aint about Nas TSS still takes the time out of their day to dis dude.
It’s funny how even though Nas isn’t mentioned, folks thing we’re talking about him.
“This is how a ‘Nigger’ song should go.”
That was a period at the end of that sentence. No ellipses, no comma followed by a Nas mention.
Song was dope. Song hit the points properly. It’s the correct way to do a song about “Nigger.” Nas doesn’t have a monopoly on the concept so praising Wale’s effort is not a slight at the almighty Mr. Jones.
*does the Moosa and goes to find out where Brent got that Kid & Play shirt*
^ Wayne too.
C’mon, David…We all know who that last sentence was geared at. Let’s not play coy.
why the Nas jabs?
we have literally like a million mc’s rapping, yet Katrina, Jena 6, educational and economic disparity, police brutality, black on black crime, nor most any other issue that ails the community is rarely even mentioned beyond a verse or mixtape single, and Nas gets continually shitted on for doing sumn beyond the formulaic rut hip-hop generally finds itself wallowing in.
Wale’s joint-especially the 2nd verse-is brilliant, but why not other opinions? Why not Nas’? Why not Blu’s? Why not whoever your favorite rapper is at the moment?
^ Ditto.
excuse my tardiness, but Rising Down is an incredible album, it touches all aspects of life (like the ROOTS always do) politics, streets, and it has a very lyrical balance…..I really dont need to mention the production do I??
Actually, the sentence was in direct response to the question Gotty posted on my last Nas post (where I did, admittedly critique/”shit on” his approach) where he asked who could legitimately make a song that tackled the concept. I thought Wale did it.
Hands up in the cub scout honor thingy. That’s what that was about. Not a swipe/jab/defecation on Nas
@ blaze….ur biased.
…but then again, so am i.
that roots album is most definitely the hiphop album of the year for me.
however, this wale mixtape is battling nas for best mixtape thus far.
as for weezy…dude, i’m still trying to listen to it all the way through. i make it to “let the beat build” and then i just get bored with the next to tracks….and then i switch to another album. i need to commit myself more to learning the finest wayne-isms and what have you…
@rich….if u dont stand for something you will fall for anything (someone please copyright that statement, I wanna know who came up with it and why)
Thats the reason so many young people are actually saying that weezy’s TCIII is such a good album, beacuse they listen to a couple radio singles and bull-shit leaks and feel compassion for him…..BLAH!!
That lp really SUCKD!! sorry, I do love the production though for some reason I cant stop listening to the beats, GOTTY/ ALMIGHTY TSS if you can be so brave could u direct me to getting that albums instrumentals?
ps….
dr. carter and mr. carter are amazing “all-around” tracks!!
props!

Hacksaw Jim Duggan was always a beloved crowd favorite; the classic ‘face rassler. Nobody wielded a 2 x 4 like that dude.
I hated Hillbilly Jim tho.

WTF@kamala…..et i aint effein eit u my dude, u alwayz have a nigg trippin b
remember when Randy & Bill Mulkey would have to fight The Road Warriors & the match would be over in, like, a minute and a half.
Animal would sit one of the weak-ass Mulkey brothers on his shoulders, and Hawk would come off the top turnbuckle with a vicious clothesline and make the dude flip in the air.
“Leaping” Lanny Poffo…lol
im jealous that u remember niggaz special moves, but when the roadwarriors that move that shit had to hurt….
Someone say Hack Saw?

Kamala + Rick Ross = father/son

Jake “The Snake” Roberts had that mean-ass DDT….
one of my most favoritest moments in rasslin’ history is when “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff turned against Hulk Hogan….that was thee best heel turn evar. Straight clotheslined his ass when he was least expectin’ it, then piledriver! lol
or when Randy “Macho Man” Savage jumped off the top turnbuckle with the ring announcer’s bell and landed with it on top of Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat’s throat.
old school
*raises hand*
I dated kamala’s great-niece. She didn’t wear face paint or smack her belly
That was said when that shit happened to da hulkster, i think thats the only time he cried, lol., my fave moment was probably the honky tonk vs. Andre da giant matches…u knew he couldnt but honky tonk alwayz showed me new ways to cheat.,.hehe, but i was alwayz the smallest n youngest outta my cousins…KICK EM n da NADs was my special n i neva lost…

Wow. You win lol.
Rising Down? I still listen to it. Ask my lady. I played “I Will Not Apologize” a good 3x in a row the other day while we were riding and this is coming from someone who’s not a true fan of anything except their live show.
@ Gotty:
can u please re-up those Willie Hutch Strays. none of’em work for me. RS would be great. ‘preciate it.

Those Hutch joints, i can help w/some but not all. somebody might have to help fill in the gaps. let me see what i can do.
Good Morning TSS, i had a dream about the demolition men last nite, do i need to stop smoking wigglez or was it at least twenty of them underneath at all times?
ps…how many guitars did the honky tonk man have…
Honky Tonk had more guitars than SD “Special Delivey” Jones had wins. Someone earlier mentioned that the WWF/WWE did the black wrestlers dirty. They aint lying, SD could never catch a break. They would make him job for Eli Porter. LOL
Remember Undertaker vs. Undertaker?
That shit was ill.
