It’s what you all been waiting for ain’t it? What people pay paper for ain’t it? For some the anticipation has been too much to bear. Because Dwayne Carter has elevated his status to where fans, fanatics, and of course, critics eagerly await his next move. Let’s face it: the kid generates buzz. And not the kind that will fade when the cameras go off. We’re talking the type of hoopla where his cameos on a hook generate more attention than the actual song. His tenacious work effort over the last couple of years has successfully produced an audience who swear allegiance to his every verse, forgettable or not. So with the release of the oft-delayed Carter III finally here, it’s all eyes on Weezy to see if he can hit a home run at the height of his stardom.
With the likes of Kanye West and Swizz Beatz among others rounding out the A-list producer cast, Wayne puts on a show, live from the most eccentric parts of his brain, proving he’s one of Hip-Hop’s most entertaining artists. But still manages to cast large shadows of barrenness while basking in his own light.
If there’s anything Wayne can do however, it’s rhyme. He allows listeners to journey into his codeine filled psyche on expeditions of intricate verses of madness. His strengths are greatly highlighted over simple yet abrasive mounds of drums and bass on the Bangladesh produced “A Milli.” It’s moments like this when paired with the right production, Wayne is able to claim victory. Shawn and Dwayne go for round two over a dynamic crescendo of piano melodies on “Mr. Carter,” which functions as an album highlight. D. Smith slows down the tempo on “Shoot Me Down” where Wayne pleads to be allowed time to soar beyond the stars, and is met with mellowness once more on “Tie My Hands” to give the pain caused from Hurricane Katrina some closure as Robin Thicke smooths out the chorus. And there’s no limit to Young Money’s confidence and cockiness as he pulls off a record named “Lollipop” over an alluring R&B gem without having to rap, rather effectively.
Still Weezy can’t seem the grasp the concept of a concept. He rose to prominence running wild on mixtapes but when it comes down to crafting albums, he still finds difficulty differentiating the two. As fate would have it, he ironically gets plagued with the same illness he diagnosed some of the patients with on “Dr. Carter.” All too often do the songs shift into tangential frolics of boastfulness that go nowhere. It’s practices like this that result in Fabolous and Juelz Santana popping up on “You Ain’t Got Nuthin”–to accomplish nothing, and tracks like “Phone Home,” “Playing With Fire” and “Let The Beat Build” merely serving as filler.
Much to the album cover’s discredit, Carter III doesn’t delve beneath the surface to reveal any candid signs of artistic worth, save for possibly the aforementioned “Tie My Hands.” Whether it’s Wayne getting a little to caught up in the “Best Rapper Alive” campaign or the constant leaking of songs forcing him to restructure the album, the lack of topical focal points hinder the album’s replay value. Sure, Weezy takes pride in being “misunderstood” on the album’s finale “DontGetIt,” but by failing to outline his quarrels with the Rev. Al Sharpton and the rest of the world with lyrics instead of a lengthy outro, questions are sure to be raised about the legitimacy of his candidacy for the coveted throne in Hip-Hop.
Lil’ Wayne has come a long way from his days as the whiny voiced youngster in the Hot Boys crew but shows he still has groundwork ahead of him as the album falls short of it’s monumental billing. Over a decade deep in the game, Wayne has demonstrated with irrefutable evidence that he has completely mastered his flow and the ability to ride the wavelength of any beat in his vicinity. His next challenge: cooking up lyrics that will stick to your ribs in the long run.

i thought “let the beat build” was fire not filler – at least the beat is… not a wayne fan, but there was some bangers on the album… agree w/ the 3.5…
Not so sure about alla dat dough. Its all pretty harsh. To me the scale starts @ atleast 4 cigs and only slides up towards 5 from there.
I think Wayne understands exactly what he’s doing and executes it with near pen precision.
We should have a fucking Wiki post of everyone’s 500 word review on this one…
@ gotty: good lookin on more left-overs, two
PEACE
C3 ; 3 years of gestation ; 3,5 !
i’m okay…
Dr. Carter on repeat. Those horns.
*Ducks before stones are thrown*
Co-signs LC…
“Dr. Carter” is that shit.

===================
the beat…not the rhymes.
Dr. Carter on repeat. Those horns.
===================
He started strong…then dropped that babblin ass “beetlejuice” line.
That ain’t hip-hop. That ain’t real spit and I ain’t buyin the shit.
I’ve been on both sides of the fence for Wayne. He’s good @ what he does…but what exactly is that in the big scheme of things?
Best rapper alive? Enh…
Sad part is, you got a whole generation growing up thinking this & he are the pinnacles of rhyming.
smh.
matter of fact, lets all do in Haiku form (5-7-5)…
I’ll try first:
It is Wayne Carter’s
world we are all just living
his dream with him two
feel free to add on…
PEACE
i knew ‘ye didnt produce tie my hands..
i actually liked “Phone Home” (not the phone home shouts on repeat but the I Feel Like Dying like flow from Weezy).. and “Playing with Fire”. Replace those two with Mrs. Officer and La La (with a completely out of place Busta cameo) in the filler catagory.
The best on the album go to Mr. Carter and Dr. Carter without a doubt.
The review title would round out the top three.
Nah, 3.5 is a little light….
“Let The Beat Build” is filler? C’mon, how can You not eff with Wayne on that one?
No mention of “Comfortable” or “Ms. Officer”? Both were well executed bids at radio love & the first time Wayne has even attempted anything this blatantly geared for the mainstream.
“Shoot Me Down” doesn’t suffer from Eminem deciding not to jump on it. If You’re looking for some depth, look no further.
Even “You Ain’t Got Nuthin” has two of the illest verses from Fab & Elz in recent memory.
If I remember correctly, “Trilla” got 4 cigs & isn’t nearly as replayable. “Tha Carter III” is a superior album, even with it’s flaws, & deserves at least as much as “Trilla”. Seems like this review was at least partially concieved before the album even dropped…
^^
and he didn’t do the beat for “Shoot Me Down” as well!
Trilla ain’t get no damn 4 Cigs.
And I can’t believe you’re trying to defend throwaway verses in “You Ain’t Got Nuthin.” It’s really the same song as “La, La” with different rappers. What’s “Let The Beat Build” about? C’mon truthfully? Go head and spit those last bars for me. I’ll wait.
It seems like when it comes to Wayne, people make excuses and give him a pass just because of his style. Catch someone off guard with a question like “What remixes did Wayne kill last year” and watch the “Ummm’s….Uhhh’s” start. His shit isn’t timeless and that’s definitely not hard to see with this album.
This cd is a huge dissapointment. Wayne had the chance to put the game in a chokehold after the carter 1 and failed twice with carter 2 & 3. I wuz a wayne fan way b4 the dickeaters. Im talkin when prefix came out not after he got popular. i stop fucking with him after the carter 2. Anybody from philly will cosign this but yrs b4 the gilly/wayne debacle everybody at home in philly use to say gilly wrote for him and fathered his flow/swag. And if you listen to wayne shit after the gilly shit he doesn’t rap the same at all. His flow and rhymes are completely different. Listen to the young money dedication mixtape then listen to the drought 3 and honestly tell me that is not 2 diff rappers. He jus says these whack ass punchlines and people think its hot. Somebody actaully said the “im rare like mr clean with har” line was hot!! WTF??! Plain and simple Wayne has fallen off for quite sometime now wheter people want to admit it or not. But in a rap era were most of these new rap aggins are one hit wonder weezy will be looked at in a higher level.
I totally agree witht he writer about how weezy doesnt know the diff between mixtape and cd. You cant be considered no great rapper if your rap highlights are mixtapes. And this younger generation does nto understand that.Anyway tha carter 3 doesn’t touch ghostface-big doe rehab or AZ- undeniable. these the rap aggins that should be gettin all this hype over nuffin. Been in the game forever and continue to make hot shit!
PS. Gotty could you up gilly ft lil wayne “pop that trunk” so aggins can see how identical wayne sounds to gilly!?
I’m wit’cha on this one TC…. and good job, though this probably a no-win review for you.
I really haven’t replayed this album ‘cept for a couple of singles here and there. The best part of this album is the production. MAYBE it could’ve crept up to the 4 range, but I really ain’t feeling it like that. The cuts that you mentioned working, work for dude, but I just have a real hard time trying to listen to “fluffy” lyrics that are constantly proclaiming to mean something tangible and great.
I can’t even see the heads who dig this album checking for it like that in a month or two, but eh, what do I know?
1 point automatic deduction for the album cover.
Let that ……common noww

Wayne just ain’t all that
yet some will say that he is
and I don’t know why
this is 2.5 cigs at the most. only songs i still play are Dr. Carter, Mr. Carter and the Lollipop Remix which ain’t even on the album.
Went too cop this joint was upset at the 13 trac BS almost went postal on the dude at Best Buy like WTF is this… ROFLMAO
Regardless what we say this album will sell: A MILLIE A MILLIE A MILLIE!!! LOL!!! Nah man, real talk though this album had a few bangaz but I don’t see it being replayed thoroughly (by any serious hiphop head at least) in the months to come. I agree with TC that Weezy has quite a few “disposable” bars and that like Jigga he constantly gets a pass no matter how unimaginative and basic his raps are at times. It made me laugh as I walked into HMV today and saw scores of teenagers and young adults in the hiphop section; I SMH with you as well Gotty.
wow..this has been a pretty average year when it comes to albums relieased..damn i was hoping the summer would pop off..smh
UMMMMM TC im going to have to ask for a rating change. There is NOOOOOOOOO WAY. I mean NOOOOOOOOO WAY that this album comes close to AZ undeniable. Either raise undeniable’s rating or drop this rating. Something has to give.
lol Im joking naw but for real tho
I cant even front ,I skipped to the end of the review to see if it got the infamous “3.5 cigs” that people have been complaining about…. I broke out in laughter when I saw it.
but moving on…
Did anyone else thing Fab and Juelz KILLED wayne on “Nothin On Me”???
Fab’s verse was absolute flames..
I don’t know what people were expecting from the Wayne album. He put up all that pseudo-lyrical, conscious/unconscious rap that everybody was lovin from the mixtapes and attempted to throw concept songs like Dr. Carter and Emo songs like Tie My Hands…quoteth Mr Green they are who we thought they were.
sidenote: ILL how the lakers came out to heart of the city.
I’m with Amp, although I waited out the leaks and just picked it up today so I’m only on a couple spins. But really dig it so far. ‘Comfortable’ is pretty incredible, and both ‘Carter’ songs bang, ‘La La’ until the Busta verse is dope, the whole thing seems way more solid than I expected for sure.
Did anyone else thing Fab and Juelz KILLED wayne on “Nothin On Me”???

All I’m saying, is that Cats were waiting to crush this album way before it dropped. To say “Let The Beat Build” is filler is crazy. That song is one of the best examples of what makes Wayne appealing. Bizzare? Sometimes. Absurd? Kinda. But that’s the genius of Lil’ Wayne. While most rappers these days are indistinguishable from the next, Wayne’s style & frame of reference can’t be duplicated by any MC. Sure, the album has a couple of severe missteps, but where the average MC falls back on the typical conventions, Wayne goes left & for better or worse, there’s something admirable in that.
@ Chuck
Listen to this: http://www.zshare.net/audio/13429936cdee6410/
I give it 2 squares.
With “Tie my hands” Wayne bodies his whole album. On that cut, he shows us what he could be if he doesn’t settle on who he has become. He could be a very powerful voice interperting the world for the youth while being respected as a brilliant mind, witty and relevant. For the most part, I hear rambling.
Mrs. Officer is dope, I just turn it down over bobby v’s whooting.
@Gotty… you let one little line ruin the whole cut for you?! Well… come to think of is, Pras’ line on “Nappy Heads” about “a battle ain’t a battle/ unless it’s ssssssnake as a rattle” really killed that track for me, even though it’s great up until then. I agree with you that the art of lyricism has drained off though…
@ Yikes! and OED
Haiku #3
Best rapper alive?
What about Andre three stacks?!
I can think of more…
“What remixes did Wayne kill last year?”
Everyone He was on…
Mary’s joint w/ the Treat Em Right beat.
Killed that.
@ Ray Money
I copped Undeniable bro, but ain’t no way that it’s better than TC3. Fuck a Carter 3, where can I purchase the official release of And Justus For All?
TC
… whats good with that? So it was just a mixtape track Wayne bought and put on his album or what?
Im kinda disappointed now and I dont know why LOL
4 cigs, we all heard half the album before it came out. we cant discredit that when judging this body of work.Actually we should be mad that the album was not soley exclusive for the carter that fact alone down grades it for me but it was solid music overall.
let the beat build was not filler….that was a concept song.
I think toward the end of this TC realized he was riding weezie a little hard and then toward the end he had to pull some negative shit out to not sound like a stan.
no offence TC…not one of your better reviews.
Mary’s joint w/ the Treat Em Right beat.
Killed that.
…………………………………………..
I want to hear.
It’s almost as if co-signing Lil’ Wayne means You’re not a “real Hip-Hop head”.

Mary – Just Fine RMX

hold the fort, Amp….
The Wayne “supporters” will be along shortly, I’m sure…
@ Petey
No it wasn’t. He was just bragging. Rapping more calm when the beat was broken down to make it seem like he was building up to something. He ain’t saying shitttttt! This album reminds me of Encore a lot. Definitely flashing skill but not enough to knock it outta of the park. You seen any “Notable Quotables” from Wayne yet? Nope. Cuz he can’t stay on topic enough to give us one.
@ Reggie
No doubt it’s solid. 3.5= solid.
@ Ray Money
LOL. That’s a matter of preference. We all know AZ’s outlook on Hip-Hop is more pure than Wayne’s…but Undeniable better than this? Nah! Not this time lol
@ Amp… I know that’s not what you’re saying, but you think so?? I think the implication is probably more like if you co-sign Wayne, you probably don’t wear a backpack or flyer windshields.
This IS the “no-win review”…
#2 is coming soon… ain’t that right, Nas?
How is Ghostface any different though? Ghost has had PLENTY of moments when he hasn’t made any sense, yet he get nothing but praise. This album isn’t a masterpiece, but it isn’t trash either.
it was a concept song production wise…wayne picked that beat and has to be given some creative props for what he did on it…it may not be I gave you power but still…
I cant disagree with the overall rating of C3but you left unnoted alot of notable shit from this album.
Ghost stays on topic WHILE spazzing out.
That’s why he is one of the best storytellers since Slick Rick.
Dundee.
LMAO— damn Chuck I did the same thing!!!
It’s like…
“That ain’t hip-hop. That ain’t real spit and I ain’t buyin the shit. ”
I know that wasn’t a blanket statement by Sir G, but that seems to be the mindset of alot of Hip-Hop purists who harken back to “the good ol’ days”.
IMO, Dude is dope. When He stumbles, it’s not a pretty sight, but when He’s on…it’s pretty fucking impressive. Only time will tell what Wayne’s final legacy will be.
You seen any “Notable Quotables” from Wayne yet? Nope. Cuz he can’t stay on topic enough to give us one.
————————-
LOL
Ghost has had PLENTY of moments when he hasn’t made any sense, yet he get nothing but praise.
==========
I’ll be the first to say that about Ghost, easily. But Ghost has more moments on point & w/coherent rhymes.
This album isn’t a masterpiece, but it isn’t trash either.
=============
Hence it got a 3.5.
the infamous “3.5 cigs”
==========
It’s “3″…but this shit is another 40 degree day lol.
3.5 cigs again? haha
@ Petey
Now we’re giving supreme props to dudes for picking beats??? This time around I think it was more important to discuss why it didn’t reach it’s mark opposed to glorifying him for being some sort of oddball genius. We all know he can spit but the album as a whole…well you read the review. Trust me, the Crew has been going about this one for a minute.
LOL @ OED
I often wonder where wayne pulls his references from…sometimes he uses quotables from pop culture and shit far before his time…sometimes it still dont make sence how he got so good so fast…maybe not good but better than he was.
damn, i’ve only listed to C3 all the way through 3 times. i keep hating myself for not listening to it more, but alas these’s other shit i wanna hear more right now such as….
nas’ “nigger tape”. that boy is kicking some knowledge to some nice ass beats on that mixtape. i know if it’s off topic, but i had to go there.
You seen any “Notable Quotables” from Wayne yet? Nope. Cuz he can’t stay on topic enough to give us one.
———————————————————————
So there are no Wayne verses worthy of a “Notable Quotable”?
SMH
“We all know he can spit but the album as a whole…”
…deserves 4 cigs.
If ur a reg here at TSS you’ve had plenty of time too listen too and shit damn near write your own review so all that extra too be included is BS. The other — reviews that have gone by over the last week”s” have the shit read them.
I really didn’t expect 3.5 but I had too think on that 10 scale where it is atleast a 7 soooooooooooooooooo……
Another quality review TC. I can accept the 3.5. I think the hype was to much for Wayne to live up too. “let the beat build ” was good. He could have came stronger. “Comfortable” going to be a hit second single. i don’t know who green lite “Police Officer”. He was trying to hard to be different on “Phone Home”. The album was far from trash and far from great. It was good. Gotta admit the young boy has improved on each album so far. He might have to make a 4th trip to the carter.
@ Amp
“Hollywood Divorce” is the first one that comes to mind and prepare to stand your ground on that claim come this December.
Spa-spaz if you want to.
If 5 Cigs is a classic, what is a 4 Cig rating worth?
i dig the album been bumping it when i’m not listening to cowherd in the morn. yea, lyrically he could have stayed on topic, but i dig his flows and honestly i’m digging the word play you guys are eating him up over. i like wayne, you can hate on me for liking an artists music, but all of you hating on it so throughly were lined up to hate it before it was released. i like it more than the C2, and not for any particular reason….i just like it. goin to buy my copy tomorrow. it is funny that you think shitting on this album will make someone read you opinion and think “yea, i should hate weezy too!!” just a thought i could be wrong.
Most Gangstarr albums are like 4′s….
This isn’t a Gangstarr album, IMO
@OED
Ghost can tell a hell of a story, but not making any sense, is not making any sense! You don’t get credit because you told a good story. Sometimes dude is just left field for no reason. I’m still waiting for him to finish the story on “Shakey Dog” too. That my joint!
some are 4.5′s, BTW
*runs from the backlash*
If your boy came up to you and told a story that didn’t make sense you wouldn’t know what the hell he was talking ’bout….
SOMEHOW (Trust me, Mayne, I can’t ess-plain it either) we all come away knowing EXACTLY what Ghost meant by the end of the verse….
Listen to “Run”… Dude was all over the place, but as listeners, most of us were right there w/ him.
Oh and Fab spazzed on that track too.
What I was getting at was, Ghost (SOMEHOW) always makes sense…. *shrugs shoulders*
I can’t explain it either, but you can’t be a dynamic storyteller and incoherent at the same time, and Ghost IS a dynamic storyteller…
@OED
Wayne fans will say the same thing about him. “Run” was my joint too. I guess I dig both artist for the same reason. They just do them and don’t worry about the backlash.
guru’s has a 2.5-3 ciggie flow…
guru has…
I aint even readin what you or anyone else wrote on this topic…
This album is a CLASSIC and there is going to be a GENERATION of kids conceived to it.
I grew up on golden era hip hop, but whats done is done.
f*ck livin in the past, im about the future.
Carter III, and Games new L.A.X….
Space-age thug shit.
4.5 – 5 goddam mics, stars, cigs, toilet rolls, twinkies, whatever you want to call it.
@ OED
I get what you saying.
I never really seen what the big deal was with GangStarr. I like some of there stuff, but never really seen what the fuss was about.
This album is a CLASSIC and there is going to be a GENERATION of kids conceived to it.

wow… i don’t think a handful of viagra could get me up with weezy playing in the background…
wow, frank. wow.
@ MadeInMilwaukee
Here’s the deal w/ Gangstarr….
Primo in his prime, and Guru being the assist man, and occasional leading scorer…
“Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is…”
WHY that sh*t is catchy is beyond me, but it was, and that’s how they did, and by the timethe listener would get around to saying, “Heyyyy, Guru just tried to sneak one past me”, you’d be bopping your head to the next classic beat….
Frank…..
baby….
wowwwww……
I ain’t sexin’ to A Millie….. but now that you think about it…
*rubs chin*
Wow, been so into the game that I just joined this…
Look, this is NOT an arbitrary 3.5. We battled, discussed, argued, laughed and did a lot of shit over the last week to come to this conclusion. Some thought it was pretty freakin great, others thought this deserved a roach. But it was definitely a thought-out review.
This sums up the album for me: “Dr. Carter” is a great song. Unreal. But then he says “I’m rare like Mr. Clean with hair” on “Phone Home.” It’s def. a schizo album. So opinions are prolly gonna reflect that. So I agree, the impossible review.
I ain’t sexin’ to A Millie….. but now that you think about it…
*rubs chin*
=======================================
You gotta have rhythm & stamina to even think about using that joint as a soundtrack lol
ps: I was at Best Buy in New Orleans today…EVERYONE in line had a copy of the album. Shit is gonna do numbers.

Well, … since Wayne’s album leaked I’ve:
1. Memorized about 70% of the lyrics to Wale’s mixtape (TC please hit us off with a review of that joint… a brotha would love to hear your thoughts on that piece of work).
2. Re-visited Amerie’s Touch album.
3. Listened to N.E.R.D.’s Seeing Sounds album enough to give it about as many cigs as TC gave Tha Carter III.
Dwyck is one of my fav songs all time, and I understand Primo too. I just don’t think Guru was that good of an mc.
^ Guru had his moments.
Primo was Rondo…
Don’t be a star, just don’t make the star look bad, and the star will be great…..
*I didn’t say that, the Sapporo did*
excuse me GURU was Rondo
Damn you, Sapporo!
Wow did people really just compare wayne and ghostface?? Thats crazy. Yea ghostface rants but we don’t understand him becuz he use to rap with the 5% percent language and you gotta know it to know it. How is undeniable not better then this cd??? There is plenty of skip tracks on tha carter 3. I can play undeniable from beginning to end.
LMAO @ David D

Ray
I can’t listen to more than 5 songs on this album (2 of them I heard months before it even dropped).
I still can’t find anyone in person who is really feeling this album (and we all listen to Weezy around here).
I can’t believe people don’t notice that “Let The Beat Build” is an “out of date” beat from a very “current” producer.
I can’t believe people really listen to Wayne and think out of ALL the rappers in the world he is in the top whatever.
I can’t believe TSS were afraid to give this the 3 max cigz it deserved and catch hell.

Yeah they disappointed me too…
a straight 3 might’ve been a little harsh, but the Wale mixtape references are funny, b/c like Seinfeld, the album is for the most part, entertaining, but at the end of it you’re left asking, “what was that REALLY all about, and what did I get out of it?”
Unsatisfying…. like ordering a two piece and a biscuit and dropping a wing on the floor, right as the restaurant was locking its’ doors for the night.
This album is a CLASSIC and there is going to be a GENERATION of kids conceived to it.
—————————————————————–
Im talking UNPLANNED parenthood.
As in HOOD-PARENTS.
Not you old-ass viagra needin has-beens…
Fuck that – RIGHT NOW those little mofos are out there humping each other like crazy to ‘Tie my hands’, ‘Comfortable’, ‘Lollipop’, ‘Mrs Officer’, and yes: ‘Let the beat build” – whole different meaning to the word ‘filler’…
The kids of the future that will be robbing your kids in the future are being conceived to the Carter III RIGHT NOW.
If You can say You’ve never heard an ill Lil’ Wayne verse, it makes no sense to start quoting them. Your mind is already made up
Can’t say I’m surprised
This doesn’t solidify
Best rapper alive
http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/?p=2667
^” I can’t believe TSS was afraid to give this the 3″
=======================================
We agree to disagree, believe that.
2.5 Cigs.
fuck a dick rider. fuck a fanatic. fuck pity.
When you elevate yourself to legendary status, you need to be judged by such standards.
He says he’s the best, I’ll put this up against the best and get a 2.5. max. 3 if he was humble enough to stop considering himself the next Ghandi.
The album gets worse with each listen. No real substance. No replay value. Not much originality.
It was a good album. But good is not what “the best rapper alive” should put out. Excellent. Defining. Pivotal…the album is none of these things.
But it’s not terrible.
so it gets 2.5 contracigs. (yes, Gotty, I’m going down from 3.)
*Contra catches the referee looking the other way, steps in the ring and elbows The Carter 3 in the back of the head.*
lol
lol @ OED
But seriously though. All this talk of it being a classic needs to cease.
To all those who earnestly believe this, I’ll concede to this: The audience decides what a classic is. Not the critics.
With this being said, is this where u want to set the bar? Is this really what you want the new generation of wanna-be hip hoppers to aim for? Is this really how you want the future defined? I’m all for some of these newer young’ns doing it a different way. Go for it. But Wayne, point blank should not be let to hold that torch. Those who don the crown of having made classics bear a great deal of responsibility to cultures, peoples and the future….
If you really believe C3 can do this for hip hop, for the culture, for the future…. I pity your spawn.
*hops off soapbox as referee turns around.*
Anybody remember Kanye’s Beatdowns in Complex Mag where they would use 5 scales to rate celebrity outfits…?
those 5 being: Elitist, Hipster/Cool Guy, Hood/Street, Middle America/Suburbia, & ‘Ye
if that were to be applied to album ratings
On a ‘hood scale, Weezy gets 4.
if you compare it to the current crop of releases.
Substance? Wale got that.
Who’s more outlandish with the delivery & styles? Wayne. I’d venture to say that Weezy is André 3000′s fashion sense & wardrobe in rap form, if that makes sense.
Still, though…whether it’s Wale, Weezy, or whoever….I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but it seems like all rappers do nowadays is fucking mumble and blabber, sometimes coherently, sometimes incoherently (like this comment that I’m composing, lol)
nobody spits quotables, and nobody has any real commanding presence…I’m not just talking about swagger either…that authoritative, James Earl Jones-esque charismatic vocal quality…like a Chuck D, KRS, Ice Cube, Kane, Big….
like Guru said, it’s “Mostly Tha Voice”
awww, fuck it, I’mma come right out and say it….most rappers nowadays sound like wussies
enough of me going off on a tangent
Former Wayne Fan Checkin in
Carter III is a 1.5/ 2 cigs affair for me
Only song that got replay been on the radio for months, Lollipop
Wayne been bullshitting a long time and this album is the culmination of endless dickriding and ego boosting. He think he hot cause everybody givin him a freepass. Shit is sad. Wayne at age 14 had more focus and spit then the “New Wayne”
only song in the last few years I think Wayne merked was Army Gunz (1st verse only)
“Yo, too many songs, weak rhymes that’s mad long
Make it brief Son, half short and twice strong” – GZA
I actually enjoy the album. I say that because my hopes weren’t high to where I thought it might be a classic. IMO he hasn’t been through enough to give us that. I think he’s an album or two away from that. Also as long as he’s letting Baby and Slim pick the tracks a “classic” may never be in the future. He should have went to the Roc when he had a chance.
@ Teef
hasn’t done much yet, but of the newer jacks, Jay Electronica would be a cat that has that presence of voice and quotables you spoke of….
picking the right beats
an artist that has focus, direction, and purpose
content that’s concise and leaves an impression
music that (re)shapes the listeners’ consciousness
yeah, Carter III ain’t classic, but it sure as hell is my guilty listening pleasure for the summer….something I can ride to and, for the most part, not take too seriously
Is Jay Electronica that dude. I here his name a lot, but can never find his music. What the verdict on duke?
@ OED re: Jay Electronica – true dat
everybody in the blogosphere needs to conduct a thorough sweep of the internets for that Act II: Patents of Nobility that Jay E promised last Christmas

Fat Joe feat. Lil’ Wayne & The Game – “Ain’t Sayin’ Nuthin Remix” (Clean) (Produced By Cool & Dre) (Verbatim)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/13440841d77a36fc/
This isn’t the best that Wayne has put out (he didn’t really get my attention until C2)…Truth be told though, hot is hot…Nah, he ain’t the best (but he’s supposed to think he is), nah, the album ain’t that cohesive (neither are his thought patterns obviously), nah, it ain’t “golden age” (cosign Frank, that’s gone, until it recycles) and yeh, the hype was a bit much (but every artist wants that kinda hype for every project)…Compare it to most of what passes as hip-hop today, and it’s damn good. I skipped a few tracks when I played it, but I did that for illmatic and return to the 36 chambers too when they came out. the only thing missing was Andre 3000, to make more sense. My motto for music (& everything else) nowadays is do it better if you don’t like it…
This is Lil’ Wayne. Random bullshit, no significance whatsoever, and a bizarre charisma and commanding presence that forces you to pay attention to him. When you DO pay attention, you find out that nothing of any note is going on here. “Greatest rapper alive” is a disgustingly off-base claim. It’s laughable. It’s preposterous.
saying wayne cant rap is like saying jimi hendrix couldnt play guitar bcos he had freaky hair and was a fuckin wasted hippie. its just aint the truth…
also im gonna say this cos no one else will, but fabolous verse on ‘you aint got nothin’…
goddfuckinDAMN, those lines about the wayans etc. ffffffffffuck
I’m definitely in the Twilight Zone if dude is considered ‘good’ by any stretch of the imagine. I can’t believe that this trash has become some sort of standard of near excellence.
“Sad part is, you got a whole generation growing up thinking this & he are the pinnacles of rhyming. ”
What’s funny is the previous generation was duped into the same thing with Jay.
Wow Weezzy’s post alwayz get the most response…what have i missed? Im tooo twisted to respone now, but i will address everyones comment in da morning, BLAHZAY BLAH, lol…
ps., THAT SHIT SUCKED(excuse my FRENCH greums!) Only hot track was mr. Carter(damn i cant stand HOV, but i gotta respect HOV) & dr carter, cause it showed his college whachamacallit D.S.?
pss…,
Dont give that bullshii 3/1-2 T.C. U give everyone that ratin, did u peep all the comotion all the purposely leaked tracks, not to mention that NEWSWEEK interview… That Album was a disgrace, besides the BEATS(prouction, Shout-Out KAYNEEZY!)
I bet this album gets bumped in the hood more than Untitled will just because Weezy doesn’t have a “tin can for ears.”
Well here’s my 5 cents. Normally I’m allover shit like A millie from Wayne, cause I just want to here a nigga rap cut the bullshit. I do enjoy his little forays into R&B, when he leaves the singing to someone else that is. Overall the shit is very catchy, exactly what summer music is supposed to sound like for the most part, i.e. fun, riding music, etc. So I’m cool with that.
I think if some of the dope songs over the past year didn’t get leaked and made it on the album, it’d be much better, but I can’t help but feel like he could’ve still put about 4 more gems on here to quiet the haters. Get rid of the obligatory posse cuts, and make about 4 songs about something that’s not a girl, drugs or run of the mill street shit. He should’ve got with 3 Stacks and figured out some ol Aquemini type of shit, something, anything to expand his subject matter a bit. Their is a War going on afterall, elections, economy, shit something. Theirs nothing wrong with bs as long as theirs some balance.
One thing I noticed is that he doesn’t talk about street shit that much on the album compared to past efforts, seems like he’s getting away from the psuedo gangsta shit even more.
I think 3 and a half is about right, unless your a hater, not in touch with todays generation(i’m in my mid-twenties), or just don’t ever just listen to an album and enjoy it for what it is. On that note I’m feeling most of it. If I want knowledge I read a book, not fucking song lyrics, but he could’ve given those that don’t a little something to think about somewhere in their.
I like that shit, “do it better if you don’t like it…”
I’ve been away from the SS for a while, searched through some comments but can’t find a DL link for the carter 3, if someone could direct me to it I appreciate it.
I might just buy in on my lunch break tomorrow, my financial situation isn’t half bad right now I probably should buy the shit, no reason not to support some artists at this point. Then I don’t have to bother burning the mug either
C3, 3yearsofgestation, 3cigs!

Best rapper alive? Damn. There are a lot of rappers out there that could take that title but not wayne. I could record the same album drunk as hell and i’d sound the same as his little mumbling ass. And i had to laugh at the sticker on the front of the album saying that Kanye said Waynes the hottest on the planet! What the fuck does he listen to.
@OED
Ghost can tell a hell of a story, but not making any sense, is not making any sense! You don’t get credit because you told a good story. Sometimes dude is just left field for no reason. I’m still waiting for him to finish the story on “Shakey Dog” too. That my joint!
===============================================
Shakey Dog Starring Lolita just left me hungry. realy doe spike lee should direct a 3 part music video of shakey dog cuz so much shit happens in those tracks.picture ithttp://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ghostfacekillah/shakeydog.html

1. Classic??, the album just came out so its ridiculous to throw around..
2. Rught now, The Game > Lil’ Wayne. Don’t agree, sue me.
3. Props on the Jay Electronica link and the Cormega info.
???@mdubb, so basically the album dosent have substance?
im sorry maybe u just heard a couple singles or your mad at the leaked tracks (even though all artists has their material leaked i.e. kanye and he put together a very soild album that sold very well), but please listen to the entire album without skipping to the tracks that are popular, and u will also discover that its TRASH!!
Smh@nothing wrong with bs…thats just plain sad, cut his mic OFF!
@greums, i didnt get any sleep yet, so u win this round…
@ God’s Son: Already got my ticket my ninja!!! See ya there!!!
^ “Show me ONE coherent verse where this lil s.o.b. is on & actually spits. Then, i’ll be quiet lol.”
WORD Gotty…I was searchin’ for the word and you found it, “COHERENT”. Weezy doesn’t sound “COHERENT” most of the album. However, there are a few tracks that go hard. It’s far from a CLASSIC…and NO APOLOGIES either!
How to rhyme like Lil Wayne in 10 steps
http://headmasterz.wordpress.com/2007/06/29/how-to-rhyme-like-lil-wayne-in-10-simple-steps/
^So true
anybody notice how during the beginning of “Mr. Carter” the way Wayne is talking sounds ALOT like how Wale rambles on the “100 Miles & Runnin” Mixtape?
“anybody notice how during the beginning of “Mr. Carter” the way Wayne is talking sounds ALOT like how Wale rambles on the “100 Miles & Runnin” Mixtape?”
^Yea I deed
cla??ic,
18tracks ? come on
a millie’s beat iz cla??ic
no he’s not the greatest of all time but I think he’s aware of his limitations. On Dr. Carter when he attempts to save the patients using other facets of hip hop (you know… like making sense) the patient dies. The only patient he could save was the one who only needed swagger, and that is admittedly Wayne’s strongest suit, most people don’t know what he’s saying but the way he said it somehow resonates to his fans. So he knows that thats pretty much all he’s got.
That being said this album i’d give a 3 at the most
Look, Wayne has a sick ass DELIVERY and the FLOW is dope and his swag on the track is nice…BUT lets say if Black Thought started rappin with those simple ass lines, vocoder/autotune etc. people would think Black Thought was getting wack, or Joe Budden or Joell Ortiz…
I mean there is no best rapper alive and if there was you can’t just be limited to a one hot verse on a “remix” track or have 900 “freestyles” and only maybe 40 of em are genuinely dope. People gave affirmed the “B.R.A.” title to wayne for the wrong reasons. Am I a hater?? Hell no, because wayne has his moments where he goes in and I can go back and listen to some of his joints…
I mean the nigga is human just like all other artists we may/may not enjoy listening to. With that said even our favorite rappers have put out bad material from Nas, Big, Pun, Joe Budden, and Jay-Z… I think the thing that is hurting people so much is how people let wayne get away with simple shit that no other rapper could get away with. Plus, many fans stamp him as “perfect” or the “every single verse, song and album is dope by him” rapper.
Carter 3…is what I and any sound human being knew what it would be..okay, not a classic. Production is on point, his flow and swag are on point but the content lacks like a lackey(WEEZY!) This is where he needs to step it up, because the biggest disappointment to me was Dr. Carter where I thought he was gonna go in but once that 3rd verse came i said: Man what the fuck?!
Wayne is dope at times, but damn sure not all the time. I just hope some of his die-hard fans realize that swag and simplicity do not = Best Rapper Alive.

YEAH! C3 was ill like snot/ go to bed like cot/ same old antics like a bot/ cleaner than a bacon pot/ bra weezy* is not/ he should be sold like abraham’s lot/ it’s the prostitute flange remix part 3 baby
yeah i got sick of rap back in the day, when everybody was trying to be a gangster etc, u just had a gang o dicks sitting round listening to wack bullshit… but now its gone completely the other way, its all the nerds outnumbering everyone, imposing their nerdy feelings on the whole scene, the hip hop nerds take over the internet and get to thinking their opinion actually matters in the real world.
sorry but it doesnt.
man i would never go near this site in a million years if they werent posting new music every day.
^suck a cock and shut the fuck up
Truth hurts huh?
keep swallowing.
Yes, Yes, Yes!! Tell Em TC. Wayne ain’t shit. Creep only makes mixtapes cause he knows when it comes to albums he has nothing to talk about. This nigga talking about he wants to be remembered like Bob Marley. BOB MARLEY!! Marley was a true activist & spoke wisdom with his lyrics. If Im wrong, im wrong…fuck yall
Bob Marley was a philandering half-white drug addicted rock-star hippocrit who renounced rastafarianism on his death bed so he could be buried a christian.
gimme peter tosh or dr alimantado any day.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/13482374bb5e5628/
What if there’s a — hold your breaths here — new standard for what makes a hip-hop album or song hot? What if Wayne’s experimentation with form is akin to Miles’s experimentation with orchestral arrangement? I see why (real dedicated artists) do what they do with little attention to critical favor. Critics, at their worst, uphold the nobilities of convention. They reinforce form instead of expanding it. I understand what we mean (sadly) when we say “concept” album. By that measure, T.I. made a “concept” album with his dual personalities failure last year. Wayne has no constraints. This makes him dope. He is not topical. This also makes him dope. The best songs come from a glut of creativity. I don’t listen to Wayne for the structure of Ludlum novel or the neat precision of a police drama with three parts, ending with a victory for the prosecution. I listen for his drug-induced rants about any and everything because the nigga’s dope. Don’t hold him to standards he did not create and scarcely defends. I could see doing that for Rick Ross based on how his work has been presented. Wayne is the King of Free Form Poetics and should be treated as such. I agree he has throw away verses but “beetlejuice” is not one of them. He is referring the the star “Betelgeus” in terms of getting high. I think that kind of shit is just genius. Ghostface too. Call me “abstract” or whatever but there’s room for formless amidst all the formulaic bullshit I usually hear.
^
Thats a very different perspective that only a few will respect in this world of conformity.
if u hate Wayne, u hate Wayne
personally, i like him but he duz get overhyped
sumtimez he’ll say sumthin that’ll b reelly hot, like who else wood think of that?
then other timez, he sayz stuff where if he wuz in front of u, u’d hit him upside the head like, the fuck were u thinkin?
but u cant front on him bcuz he may or may not be the best rapper alive, but he’z good at wut he duz n he’z successful so at the end of the day, nuthin any of us say iz reelly that important iz it? either way, he wont change…
The guy is one of the craziest linguists this world has.
