Mickey Factz’s Fave 5
ARTIST INTERVIEWS By Drew Ricketts on June 9, 2008 at 2:05 pmMickey Factz and GFC New York intend to be an entity responsible for changing lifestyles and expectations beyond music. Although Mickey’s raps have gained the most attention recently, he tinges them with hints of entrepreneurial swagger and earnest aspirations to become ubiquitous as a cultural icon. His dress, education, and hustle point to a dedicated vision but his rhymes often cover multiple aspects of his journey including hardships and hubris. So when his plans slowly unfold, they don’t seem like would-be mogul dithering, but honest work yielding higher plateaus. If not for his virtuosity on songs like “The Flood” and his In Search Of The N.E.R.D. mixtape, his claims would fall flat. TSS Crew’s Drew Ricketts asked Mickey to resurrect the Ghost of Dwyane Wade to name his Fave 5 tracks (no promo) and explain his reasons.
“Automatic” Feat. Curtis Santiago (The Leak #15)
This is my favorite song out of everything I put out so far. It has this infectious melody and comatosing chorus that just sucks you in. I can put a finger on what kind of genre of music this is, but whatever it is, I love it. I really just talk about how easy music is for me.
“Naturally” Feat. Jade (The Leak #22)
Being from a musical background, I felt it was neccessary to smooth out some of the lyrics. This is like the sequel to automatic, jazz style. I made a very bold statement that caused quite an uproar. I called myself the “New Age Rakim”. Very bold. But I aim high. I’m not gonna be like “I’m the new age Young MC.” I looked up to Rakim and I want to achieve his stature and higher.
“K-1 Attack” Feat. Nakim (The Leak #13)
I was so stressed when I wrote this letter. I felt like I needed to just let out allllll my frustrations on this pulsating beat. I talk about me and mothers quarrels, homeless people, true love, my daily troubles and fears. Its very personal. Adding Nakim just brought out more energy.
This is off my In Search Of The N.E.R.D. mixtape. I love the drum pattern used here. Also the hook just reminds me that everyday, things get better. Despite the constant bullshit of life, things get better. I’m blessed and things could be totally worse. I’ve had my fair share of happiness and success. So I should speak on it.
“The Understanding” Feat. Malcolm X Prod by Precize (The Leak #16)
I wanted to show people that I’m not just about Supras and party songs. That I’m a very well spoken person. I felt I had to prove to people that I can actually get deep.
“Had to seperate the real from the fake, now I’m standing by myself and I feel outta place.”
Lyrics like that are powerful. I wrote it for myself and it can literally be taken in both ways. Me being fake and being real. It also gives the listener an oppurtunity to look within themselves…
