“…makes you feel, he’s a cool exec with a heart of steel.”
By now, I’m sure most, if not all of you, have seen Iron Man. I went opening night.
I rate superhero movies based on how bad I want the title character’s special abilities come credit roll. Needless to say, I now want a flying scarlet-and-gold iron suit more than I want to shoot webs from my wrists, get big and green with anger, or fly faster than a speeding bullet. Though I still think having blades come out of my hands at my leisure would trump all else.
I like comic book movies in earnest. After each Marvel adaptation, I inevitably dump $100 on a renewed interest in comic collecting, which wanes within a week or two. Comic collecting is a hobby I never embraced full tilt, except for in my mind. Like skateboarding. Or drinking scotch.
Over the years, I always ended up spending my money and energy on music. But what’s great about Hip-Hop is it’s full of artists who embrace the comic culture I enjoy but never really consumed, thereby I can live vicariously through them.
ATLiens – Come on now. The liner notes?!? Getthefuckouttahere. Seeing the booklet was the first moment I knew Outkast was on some other stuff I would follow forever and ever, Amen.
Lupe Fiasco – I’m admittedly not the biggest Lupe fan, but I bought Food and Liquor on strength of his comic collection alone. He embodied that skater culture as no one I’d seen before him and made money off of those differences. Now there’s a legion of emcees following his blueprint. Can’t be mad at that.
Ghostface – Period. Which brings me back to Iron Man…
One of the most inspired moments of the movie for me was hearing the 1960s cartoon theme song discretely woven into the background. What followed when I got home was only natural…Supreme Clientele.
That album is as undisputable as a jet-powered metal suit. The infamous intro, into soulful “Nutmeg,” and then the boom bap of “One” should be enough to convince any comic collector to engage full-boar in Hip-Hop instead.
It feels good to revisit this record. Ghostface sounds familial when he spits. And he’s so smart for invoking Tony Stark/Iron Man as his alter ego – they’re inextricably linked. Hopefully the movie will draw a few more fans into his proverbial Gothem.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some comic books to waste money on…

iron man was craaaaaazy!!!
haven’t seen it, but will definitely do so.
i’ll be rating all of the superhero movies at the end of the summer since my nieces will be in town and we’ll be definitely going to see them all (batman, hulk, & hancock)
ay…i hated v.i.c. but after that rap city freestyle i had 2 give him a chance. i know he sounds like a lil wayne swagger jacker but he got some fresh songs on his myspace

Amazing armor…
Yo….
Dope movie. What’s dope about the movie is that a TRIGGERHAPPY music video is in the movie. For those that have seen the movie, remember when terrence howard & robert downey jr. was on the plane getting toasty, well in the background was the Ghostface video for “We Celebrate” produced by Triggerhappy.
Just wanted to share that fun fact…..Holla
As always…RMF!!!

LC’s a fan girl?
A Lady after My own heart lol!
that movie was crackkkkkkkk…cant wait for the next one
Supreme Clientele was bananas. The most commercial joint of the wally champ’s career. But it was still crazy hood.
Anybody got that link? i’m fiending for Apollo’s Kids now.
damn cuz i was just saying the same shit bout wanting a suit ! damn i guess we all got a lil kid in us.. but lets be real !!! i love Samuel l jackson but damn if i recall nick fury aint BLACK !
^ Ultimate Nick Fury was modeled after Samuel L.
The most commercial joint of the wally champ’s career.
—————————————————————
Uh uh…I think that distinction goes to the Pretty Toney Album…
The original Nick Fury was white, but years ago when they “redid” the whole Marvel Universe, Marvel approached Samuel L Jackson and asked if they could write Fury’s character based on Jules’ from Pulp Fiction and he said hell yea (he’s a big comic book fan).
^ WRONG! The character isn’t based on Jules, it’s visually modeled after Samuel L.. & Marvel didn’t “re-do” the whole Marvel Universe…They created a spin-off line which took several of the core titles (i.e. The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man) and re-imagined them in a more modern setting…The Ultimate Universe.
where can i get Supreme Clientele? I need to hear some old ghost now… I’m checking out Iron man this week–too many 12 year olds flooding the spots in SoCal for the opening.
I want Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury character to talk the way Dave Chappelle portrayed him in that Samuel Jackson Beer skit:
“Good motherfucking choice, motherfucker! It’ll get you drunk! You’ll be fucking fat girls in no time! You might even fight a nigga or two! Mm-mmm, bitch!”
Iron man was the shiz.
cosigns Yianni and Amp.
Ultimate Iron Man had quite a different pallette of characters..But, def Nick was black and modeled after SLJ.
the race change that pissed me off as a younger soul was Spawn being white.
No offense to those of a lighter persuasion, but Gotdammit, that was my nigga.
Fuck a d. b. sweeney.
*walks out*
Sam Jackson: “How’s it taste, Motherfucker?! HUH?!”
white guy: “can you stop yelling at me, please?”
Sam: “NO I CAN’T STOP YELLING, ‘CAUSE THAT’S HOW I TALK!!!”
“I rate superhero movies based on how bad I want the title character’s special abilities come credit roll. Needless to say, I now want a flying scarlet-and-gold iron suit…”
uhhh…Hell to the Yeah! Sheeit…
yeah spawn needs a makeover….that movie was the shit when i was younger but there are much better graphics now. that joint should be nc-17
LMAO @ Teef
From “A Time To Kill”…
“Yes, they deserved to die! I hope they burn in hell!”
I’m pretty sure Ghost checks TSS. I think he would be most happy if you purchased that joint.
@ Amp – YES! THAT’S the Sam Jackson I want to play Nick Fury…!
From what I remember of Nick Fury (I was more of a Spider-Man head, so I dunno)…that would be pretty much true to character, no?

Also, off topic, but that ‘Welcome to the Winner’s Circle’ by Curren$y is way tight, anyone else been bumping that?
me and LC are on the same brainwaves, i would love to get the TSS fam’s opinions. my own fam has been suprised by this list:
http://iknowtheledge.com/best-superhero-movies-ever/
Iron Man was great the rumor is that the villians for part 2 will be the Mandarin (if you remember the terrorist group was from the ten rings and they spoke of a higher power in the group). The Mandarin will also be able to control Fin Fang Foom which was an intergalatic dragon. In terms of where I would rank it in superhero flicks I would have to put it at #3 after Superman 2 (kneel before Zod) and Spider Man #2. Oh cat’s wanted supreme clientle, here you go:

anyone have atmosphere – when life gives you lemons….?
thanks.
Iron Man was my favorite comic as a kid…. dude was just a little more realistic than those other cats, and a helluva lot better than Batman.
Marvel Universe > Detective Comics
My students always asked me why I had the Iron Man posters in the classroom, and the figures on my desk… now sense the movie dropped, that’s all they wanna talk about.
Looking forward to see if they stay true to the comic in the sequel, … can’t wait to see Rhodey in the War Machine suit…
Can’t wait until April 2010!

i need to get my crap outta storage so i can post more.
@ Franchise…
Yo, that list is a little off, if you ask me. Superman Returns?!? Alright well, I guess everybody got their opinions.
I know when Batman Begins was coming out I was like “You know, I’m excited for this movie… but there’s no way it’s going to take Time Burton’s version.” Much to my surprise, I think Batman Begins might be the best in the series… and, dare I say, it may be my favorite comic book movie of all time. Now Dark Knight has a tall order to fill.
Aside from comics… I want to see a thunder-thunder-Thundercats movie. If they can do Transformers like that, they’ve got to be able to do Lion-O, Panthro and Cheetara right too.
1. Batman Begins was the sh*t
2. Iron Man comes in a close second though. I think b/w the movie theater and my internet “copy”, which is now on my iPod, I’ve watched that joint about 4 times already
3. X-Men 2 was my joint, ONLY cuz they introduced Jean Grey transformation into The Phoenix… Too bad they got “stupid corny cheesy” w/ it in part 3. They could’ve done her character (as well as Storm’s) a LOT more justice.
*** WHEN will they ever get a Hulk movie correct? Those previews for it did nothing to get me excited about it….. The best rendition of it is STILL the TV version w/ Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno. How’s that even possible when the special effects back then weren’t so special???
I’m seeing a lot of love for the Tim Burton Batman. Wasn’t really feeling that one like that. I’ma have to go back and re-watch that one.
@ OED
I agree with you about X-Men 2 and the Phoenix… shit was crazy. But you know what character they REALLY did no justice to, was Rogue. They made her weak and self-depricating. Come on now… really?! Rogue?!?!
I can’t wait til they bring Gambit into the Wolverine movie though. Gambit was my dude.
Now that I’ve allowed my inner nerd to shine full-glory, I’ll stop talking….
With 3 movies down it’s pretty clear now that X-Men movies WON’T do the female characters ANY justice. Shame too, b/c many of them were substantial, 3-dimensional types in the comic series…
my inner nerd has also spoken lol
OED & LC…Im with ya’ll on those Xmen points.
The reason why those Hulk movies aren’t doing too well is because of that damn green screen! They need to stop relying on that with the movies mayne.
Like Speed Racer…it looks straight BOOTY! Because its too much animation! If they use that much animation…..just make it a cartoon!
@ Turk
Maaaan, I forgot ALL ABOUT that Speed Racer joint.
You hit the nail on the head w/ that one….
Boo-TAY….
They gave that joint the Jar Jar Binks treatment.
How you gonna turn the Mach 5 into Herbie The Love Bug? The scenery in the previews was looking like they filmed it from the inside of a pinball machine…. WACK!
How do you skip Secret Wars by the Last Emperor?
