In these days of Clear Channel, I’m glad Stretch is bloggin’ and offering up examples of what the radio frequencies used to sound like. I’m not even from NY nor was I an actual witness to Stretch & Bobbito on the radio at any time. But every few months, my man used to dub their shows & send out a box full of tapes…and we ate into them like Now & Laters.
Not sure if these have been posted on Konstant Kontact. Even if they have & you didn’t grab’em them, get them now. Put’em on two separate hard drives, in case one crashes.
Why?
We gotta preserve the past for the future ya’ll.

Stretch Armstrong Lesson 1 & 2

Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito were one of the few outlets for underground Hip-Hop on the radio. The East Coast version of Sway & Tech. I used to stay up till 5 in the morning on Thursday’s & then drag Myself to class Friday mornings. But it was worth it to catch a Redman freestyle or hear some ill joint that no one else was up on.
classic shit!
OK…now we cookin’…turn the flame down so it don’t get too hot!!
give your soul singer top list !.!
babyface, maxwell, d’angelo, musiq, saadiq, raheem, c.wilson, dwele, williams, rell, kells, …other
why?
period
thx.peace.yall!
OOOooooohhhh weeee!
These two dudes are a prime example that hip-hop is a universal language. Nice post.
their influence as tastemakers way back then has had, and continues to have, far & wide reaching effects….I would go so far as to say they helped nurture & cultivate 2 sub-genres of rap that were sometimes at odds with each other (thug/street & backpacker)
they gave some shine to Jay, Nas, Biggie, Big L, Mobb Deep…
also, Kool Keith, MF Doom, Company Flow, Cage, Weathermen (R.I.P. Camu Tao…also R.I.P. to Xzibit’s newborn son Xavier)
never met them…I remember maybe speaking to Bob once on the phone when I called his sneakershop Footwork to see what they had in stock, and he was talking in this bugged-out radio announcer voice….which exemplifies the type of dude he is…fun-loving, never taking anything too seriously
I don’t think the music & culture we obsess over are as central to Stretch & Bob’s lives as it once were….I think they’ve kind of moved on, as they should…
never be anything like what they did…cuz they did it for love
and ET – thanks for summarizing their effect on the world so much more succinctly than i ever could … i need to slow down on the kush.
legendary post Gotty
hip-hop…has gone the way of…
Bobbito’s hairline.
hee-hee
@ET co-sign..I think that should be the case with everything…even my college days, damn I had fun but time to move on.
But…I should be able to hold the entire body of Hip Hop (MC’s, radio DJ’s ect..) to the bar that people like this raised and set.
@ L. Hustle & Teefus
Heavy Co-Sign
I think the first time I heard about Nas or Big was on Stretch & Bobbito. And this is back when I was obsessed with all things Hip Hop. And it didn’t hurt that Stretch, Bob, & Lord Seer were some funny ass cats.
ET -
“going way way way waaaaay …. back!” – just-ice
for real.
yo Amp – remember when we had a choice of stretch & cucumber slice, or awesome 2, or martin moore & mayhem on wnyu?
no more glory days.
I used to catch The Awesome 2 & Stretch & Bob, I couldn’t get NYU to come in clear on My Sony walkman lol. There were a couple other joints too. I wanna call one of them the NightHawks show, but it’s been so long since I heard that one. I know some spanish kids took Stretch & Bob’s timeslot. DJ Sussio, I think.
ET – well said.
Like I said, I never heard them live for myself…but we used to put the tapes & just ACT like we were there b/c they kinda kept you on the edge of your seat, you didn’t want to fastfwd, & after you listened to them, you listened to them again & again…until the next batch of tapes came in lol.
the impromptu zaniness & spontaneity…”freestyle” doesn’t always have to apply to rap…having an agenda & structure can have a boring & predictable outcome…these cats threw caution to the wind and just went with the flow….we’ve been talking about classic albums & mixtapes…these dudes has a classic radio show
just cuz they arent as involved with the music like they used to be doesnt mean they are any less absorbed with the culture…im sure alotta cats (myself included) are alot less about the new music and more so about the culture and all that classic shit….i mean look @ the music they were playin and artists they were breakin…its nothin like that now…its easy to see why they wouldnt be as involved with current rap music.
“I couldn’t get NYU to come in clear on My Sony walkman lol.”
=====================================
Damn Amp! Walkman?! I haven’t heard that reference in a long time. I’mma old muhfucka man.
LOL @ D. Howser
Brings back the memories, don’t it?
^ Most definitely.
Damn you Megaupload!
but i remember that reference!!
Amp – you’re right, it was the nighthawks, and there were a couple others …. but that statement right there is a testament to the then and now – back then, we could go back and forth between the indie “pirate” underground stations and the hot 97′s and wbls joints – but never no more.
and i got WNYU to come in clear all the way up in the bx – plus i interned there LOL
Good lookin on those drops, Gotty. I’m gonna have a little Stretch & Bobbito marathon tonight!
yall rememba when the cd walkmans 1st came out and u couldnt move them shits @ all or the cd would skip….haha…i copped my 1st 1 for $75 outta the local classifieds and felt so mufuckin cool jammin that bitch while ridin the bus to & from school….

That’s why terrestrial radio is dead. Sirius & XM are dope because there’s a mix of mainstream, underground & unsigned artists. But nothing will replace the experience of staying up late & hearing something dope. Nothing will replace Stretch & DJ Cucumber Slice lol.
restock!!
hurry up

Lessons 1 & 2 are staples for underground hip-hop heads.
That was the first time I heard Mr. Eon spit.
“I shapeshift to a spliff, light myself up.” (c) Mr. Eon – “One By One”
radio was dope when you could place your faith in the DJ to play some good shit…Clear Channel, Radio One, Ennis Broadcasting….Viacom…the vampires they are, sucked flavor out of what the kids birthed.
we never had to question their judgment as to what the good dj’s would play. and the personalities of everyone on the good radio shows shone through. it wasn’t just about playing music…the listeners got to call in and bug-out too, get clowned on, whatever….kinda like here
radio is so homogenized and pasteurized now.
I will say that cats like Fifty & Peter Rosenberg kinda keep alive the spirit of making things funny…
Dude. I love “in case” one crashes.
In Case Money.
In Case apartments.
In Case toothbrushes.
In Case hard drives.

Juan Epstein is the shit!!!
“I like Turtles!”
Just in case you get in an accident lol
oh schnap…Zhigge….”Rakin’ In The Dough”…dang….hearing this old-school shit might just prompt me to cop those Carmines
*looks at bank account*
maybe not
Never was into radio, but then again here in Toronto our radio programming sucks!!! Growing up I could only rely on RapCity (Canadian version of course!), the Source, trips to my bootleg spot, and going to HMV every Friday to know what was up. You guys should consider yourselves lucky to able to have experienced some hiphop history such as that.
ps: Walkmans??? Ohhh shit!!! Remember the “Mega-Bass” feature on the Sony joints??? I swear that made the tracks thump!!! I hated those Discmans man, they would scratch my discs!!! Mini-Disc was the shit but just couldn’t get off the ground and get acceptance in the music community. It’s funny how technology has kept pace with hiphop and how you can relate albums and the equipment that you played them on to certain points in your life.
^ LOL
that “Blind Alley” loop is such a dope classic to rhyme over
KRS-ONE & Primo are performing at this year’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival

Remember the “Mega-Bass” feature on the Sony joints???
==============================================
LMAO!!! Oh shit son…
The in case spare set of AA batteries,
“I let my tape rock, till my tape pop”
@ TC: Trust me my dude, that Mega-Bass had the tunes bangin’ heavy!!! That and the old-ass big Sony DJ headphones. I remember I was so broke that I found an old pair that had only one side working!!! I didn’t give a fuck yo, I blasted my tunes through those shits until the other side blew!!!
props on the stretch & BoB

Waaay late on this discussion… but Imma chime in anyway…
If I remember my weekly playlist looked something like this…
Stretch & Bobbito
The Underground Railroad
Raw Deal Rap Show
Vibez & Vapors
Awesome Two
Hank Love and Half Pint
Kevin Keith & the Dirty Dozen
Martin Moore and Mayhem
DJ Riz
There were others, I’m sure. The worse thing is they all aired late at night and on weekdays. Don’t know how many Fridays I missed because of S&B. Sat & Sun might have been the only days there weren’t any shows on. Except maybe for the Underground Railroad, I remember them jumping around. Same station just different time slots…
Simpler times, different times… but fun none the less…
I feel old… lol
RMF…
