Aside from rocking a few Return of the Legends-esque gigs, what the hell happened to the former radio staple Naughty By Nature?
Over the holiday weekend, I was rocking their super solid Nature’s Finest compilation at my Memorial Day BBQ, and by the end of the disc, that’s all I could think about.
Together, Treach, Kay Gee and Vinnie had two multi-platinum albums, more than a few timeless singles and the entire mainstream rap world on lock in the early-to-mid nineties. The trio was genius when it came to making certified hits and they had ties some of the biggest artists in Hip-Hop. Treach himself, well, he was unquestionably one of the most talented emcees in the game during Naughty’s abridged time in the limelight.
Nonetheless, today, in a VH1 world where trivial acts are heavily applauded and rocking mainstream remixes and award shows, the Illtown, Jersey trio are ghost.
Nowhere to be seen.
If you’ve heard from Naughty By Nature, or have any info regarding their whereabouts, please let the TSS fam know about it. Real really does respect real, and these three men deserve some of that post-millennium love that many of these bottom buck chumps receive on a way too regular basis.
“So, let the sleeping and assuming and B.S. stop, because Naughty is to live and die for Hip-Hop.”
Naughty By Nature – Nature’s Finest: Naughty by Nature’s Greatest Hits (1999)

greumsy by nature, always
1st!
What’s up with some NBN shots???… Treach was one of the illest lyricist during his time… Vin played the “Robin” role to perfection.
Whatever happened to groups?
No one comes out in groups anymore.
You had groups all the way from RUN DMC to probably the last great group to be prominent Wu-Tang. After them you have to search to find a rap group that is leaving or left a mark.
I mean try to name some now….
…….Little Brother……
……
…..
…
..
and whatever list there is, just gets worse from there.
Damn man….
*goes back to ipod*
I guess all we can say is “The porn industry” must pay well…..

uhmmm…OutKast
…sigh… If anyone knows the whereabouts of Treach, email me directly. Middle school me will very appreciative.
@ Sage… I feel like there are a lot of groups coming out right now… Kidz in the Hall, Cool Kids, Pacific Division, all come to mind immediately… But I know what you mean. The Group is a highly underrated facet of hip-hop.
uhmmm…too
@Esco
I would include Outkast in the group time range that I mentioned.
Since the “fall” of Wu tang (which would be roughly be around 2000) there really hasn’t been any new groups to talk about.
I agree KITH, CK and PD are coming up but have not begun to scratch the surface yet.
What I want to see is the return of the MC and DJ. Not producers that program tracks but real DJ’s that spin during shows. When the MC did songs about their DJ. The DJ opened the show rocking and the MC came out and complimented what he was doing. Even LL would big up Cut Creator. The last DJ song that comes to mind is “GO DJ” but Wayne don’t have a prominate DJ. I think thats what the game is missing, the relationship/chemistry between the MC and DJ.
@chuck
yo maybe the next album with dj on board iz the next Kurupt album produced by Primo.
but how many tracks… if >=7… so i think it’s a MC and DJ album! (but this time iz dead homie)
the better album with this spirit will be next projects like Eternal Reflection 2 or maybe The Standard (with Q-tip shit in the board)…
But Now it’s producers ear. That’s what it iz !
ANYONE WAITING FOR CARTER 3 PEEP

What ruined “The Group”?
Ego’s..
.
You can barely have a “clique” anymore without an eventual break-up. And it’s been that way since Native Tongues…prolly before then. I know there was a period when Treach & Vin weren’t fuckin with Kay Gee & Kay Gee was gettin that Jaheim, Next money. Neither one of em is poppin at this point, so I’d expect a reunion somewhere down the road. But who’d sign em? I even doubt Koch has money to just flush down the toilet.
me greumsy. me love butt plugs!
^ Childishness.
Tretch got into acting, their producer, started with a K or something, starting producing R&B.

What happened to groups?
“First the Fat Boys break up….”
No lie, a few years ago, I saw Treach on some Girls Gone Wild Springbreak type DVD kicking it with some coeds. I don’t think they went to Spelman.

@ Amp, I’ma damn fool son…yeeain’t know?
Neither one of em is poppin at this point, so I’d expect a reunion somewhere down the road. But who’d sign em? I even doubt Koch has money to just flush down the toilet.
===============================================
I don’t know, Koch will sign anybody. They have made some questionable choices in the past.
The Fugees was a great group, after Run-DMC.
@Greums You’re right about the era. Thats what the CoolKids should be on being all retro.
Multiple Negroes rhymin’ does not a group make.
There’s a difference between “groups” and “duos”. NBN was a group. Cool Kids are a duo. Outkast is a duo that doesn’t even sit in the booth together. The Clipse? Not a group. Re-up Gang? not a group, either. Why? No DJ.
Hiphop groups used to be self-contained units. In a hiphop group you have: Your emcees, your dancers/breakers (optional), and your DJ used to handle the primary production duties…
hardcore cats don’t feel ‘em but Black Eyed Peas were/are a real group. Will.i.am did the production, a couple emcees, a singer…. So is/was M.O.P.— Fizzy Wo did the bulk of their production… 4th Avenue Jones (Ahmad from “Back in The Day” fame) was straight bananas until they broke up last year. 4 albums, big following. Group 1 Crew is a dope group out of the bay, too…
The Roots are a group. Stetsasonic (like Sly and the Family Stone we stand) was a group. De La=group… Pharcyde = classic group…
No money in being a group these days. Money’s gotta get split multiple ways, people argue over who owns the name
^ Interesting points man.
@ Gotty,
thx… Treach might be in the Top 5 of underrated “popular” emcees, you know? Dudes that released product, but got more buzz for having hits than having skills or artistry.(Like you said, Treach had much flow.)
If i had to do a short list of acts like that it’d go:
Treach
C.L. Smooth
Heavy D.
Queen Latifah
Pharcyde
Biz Markie
Fat Boys–them dude’s could spit for their era.
what’s yours?
btw: guy begat jodeci + dru hill.
4real
So M.O.P. is a group, but ‘Kast ain’t? Don’t know about that.
I know of one hip hop group who is bubbling under the surface….but they won’t come out strong for another two years….
AMP,
‘Kast ain’t a group in the sense that Stets, Public Enemy, Juice Crew, De La, Three 6, etc were groups because there’s no DJ in ‘Kast. There’s no consistent source of sound.
I know Organized Noize does their production quite often, but they bring in a little bit of everybody–jazze pha, live bands, whoever’s hot or fits the song concept.
Big Boi and Dre are a legendary duo, but a group? I dunno…
Besides 2 of anything isn’t a “group”–it’s a duo, a team, partners… Group by definition is at least 3.
Just my opinion.
I never liked Treach’s rhyme style, kind of annoying if you ask me. There are plenty of hiphop groups out there but the group has been replaced with the words “set”, “unit”, “squad”, and “gang”. It’s not about having a “group” from an artistic standpoint anymore; now it’s about just having a whole legion of niggaz for “street-cred” or having a “movement” behind you to make an impact.
Flea,
you’re right. Multiple Cats spittin’ is not a group. I can argue that Wu wouldn’t have been a hiphop group in the classic sense were it not for RZA + Rae’s production skills. That made them a self-contained collective.
Black Moon and Boot Camp Clik were dope groups–DJ Evil Dee plus a couple others held down the production end.
wasn’t a huge fan but the Beastie Boys were more of a group than most–core DJ, emcees, etc.
oh yeah: “movements” irritate me, but that’s another blog all together. lol.
Man, I listened to Nature’s Finest over and over and over and over.
Besides Sir Mix A Lot, hearing a group shout out “Seattle” got me hyped.
“Seattle Ns are the craziest!”
I’m Filipino but he still said Seattle, haha.
What happened to the Mega Mix?
Cube had one on his bootlegs album, and I always loved those.
my posse’s on broadway!!!!
luv that song!
OutKast has/got Mr DJ, and he has all ways been there.
Your logic is flawed…You called M.O.P. a group & that should be a duo…
Sick post. Naughty was never the same after 99. That “Jamboree” shit is wack.
MR. DJ hasn’t been on the tables for OutKast since ATLiens. their DJ is Cutmaster Swiff and he’s also a member of their Earthtone III production squad, producing Slimm Calhoun, TCP (the dancers for OutKast), and other under the radar tracks. trust me, i know what i speak of, we (Ludacris) were the opening act on their Stanklove Tour back in ’01 and i seent ey’thang shawty, lol…
ATCQ is a group. Nobody has mentioned them.
Yeah Cutmaster been with them forever, he is the dude that scratches like crazy during their performances and yes he is prolly one of the dopest tour djs out for mainstream artist besides dj dummy (common), scratch (epmd), or even jaycee :) haha
