D.O.C…. his loss might be more tragic than Pun’s loss.
No One Can Do It Better (’89) was not only a classic album in terms of strength of songs and beats, but it introduced a level of lyricism and wordplay that Houston and Cali hadn’t seen on a solo tip. (Scarface’s solo stuff came later.)
Plus, D.O.C. had “it”. The voice, verbal dexterity, the rhyme patterns, the swag…
he was gonna be that dude in the south/west that made you rewind over his quotables.
But like Ali after MS and DMC after the liquor, that carwreck stole dude’s voice and swag something awful.

I remember every car in Chicago knocked Funky Enough in traffic. I mean everybody, blew out their trunks on the block. Kids just rocked that one extra hard…
And tell me The Formula don’t sound hot right now.

My only gripe with The D.O.C. is that He never left the studo. It was always about how nice He was as an MC, or how dope Dre was with the beats, but no real life type shit. He was still a dope lyricist, but I don’t know how well He would’ve changed with the times.

dude was busy ghostwriting for NWA… yeah he didn’t give you the day-in-the-life joints–not for himself anyways… but i think when you can spit and write like he could, the transition to more diverse subject matter is pretty easy. Again he co-/ghost wrote a lot of stuff for NWA (him Cube and Ren were the primary writers) so he was painting some pictures.
could he have done that on future releases? maybe, maybe not.
And how many emcees today hype up their producer and DJ? a lost art in the game fo sho.

In Cincy we was bumping the hell out of Funky Enough, Let the Bass Go and The Last Song…I truly tried to listen to his second effort but couldnt get past the scratchy voice…Dre should have put him on the Vocoder and made some west coast funk out of that shit…

@ Ghost and AMP doesn’t Erykah’s new joint do that. My homeboy put me on to game. I put it into my computer and had I had sound I could rip just the beat, just the vocals.

@ chuck….i didn’t know erykah’s shit did that. what did you do, rip the cd on your computer and it saved as mt9 files? if so, i’ll throw the cd in the computer tonight and see what’s what.
@ amp…that shit could cause a major shitstorm in terms of cats rapping over other beats and shit. the world is a-definitely changing!

That MT9 shit is just music mastering in reverse; all music is recorded onto separate tracks originally, but this allows the consumer to do what the studio cats do. If this gets into some foul cats hands the music industry is super-FUCKED!!!

i worked with a cat years ago that had software on his work desktop, he’d fill up like 1500 songs a week and figure out some way to pull apart the tracks–vocals from drums from synths from…
and that was like 2001.
you think you got mashups and bootleg producers now. Wait til this MT9 hits stateside.
One that says “UNO!” hahahaha
@ Gotty – There is no other album that could besides something from NWA!
