Lyfe Jennings probably has one of the most distinctive voices in R&B of recent years. Fortunately, he’s enjoyed relative success, striking platinum and gold with his first two albums when he hasn’t exactly been a monster on the Billboard charts. This can be attributed to his first two albums being structured in such a way that it was hard to choose singles. The songs were all preceded with a skit in which he explained the song and how it related to his life. The aforementioned albums received critical acclaim but individually it left a feeling like you are missing out on the story of the album.
Surprisingly his newest album, Lyfe Change, is a break away from his previous formula. Although there are no skits in between each track, the album flows together smoothly, with plenty of noteworthy tracks that can be lauded for their positive messages and solid production.
Lyfe always tackles an array of subjects and this project is no different. The opening song of the album is an inspirational song that urges the dreamer to “Keep On Dreaming” over a backdrop of piano, strings, and guitar that accentuates the passion that Lyfe emits when he sings. Social commentary is sprinkled throughout on strong cuts like the island-inspired, Wyclef assisted, “Think You Got It Bad” where he informs the listener that things could be worse. He also speaks on the crazy nature of this generation on the soulful “Wild, Wild, Wild.”
Of course with any R&B album, the “L” word is going to be present and Lyfe tackles the subject modestly. “Never, Never Land” is a tale of a man wanting to finally settle down while getting shit from his friends and “Will I Ever” serves as a crown jewel as Mr. Jennings questions his ability of falling in love over a guitar-laced beat.
The album has it’s lows with the elementary production on songs such as “Hmmm” and “It’s Real” and a lazy, phoned in verse from Snoop Dogg on “Old School.” But aside from these and a few other minor mishaps, Lyfe Change is quality product. Fans of Lyfe’s previous work will welcome his modifications with open arms.

Nice review.. Personally, my favorite track on this was Cops Up..
Also, I thought “Hmmm” was a very good song too. *shrugs*
Lyfe is like 50 in some ways… he reminds you a lot that he’s been in prison more than necessary. but dude is actually pretty dope.
who begat Lyfe Jennings? Not Al… Not Marv… Not Freddie…
Johnnie Taylor?
I’m thinking Lyfe’s more bluesy-west side-of-chicago day-in-a-rough-life soul slinging…

Following its release, the album debuted at number 6 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 54,000 copies in its first week. Now 74,665 copies.
Less than Game Theory (300k) probably definitely.
Hip-Hop ain’t dead ?
roots never sell… they can do 250 dates a year so these cats will always eat. if they left the country for 3 years nobody outside of OKP World would notice or care.
And that’s a shame. But such is life. Long as they can play and write, they’ll be fine.
Maybe a MySpace/50 Cent type deal is in their future.
they need to get it like the Grateful Dead–tour, sell albums at the shows and call it a day.
Big Brown’s trainer was convicted of doping horses years ago. Brown is Big for reasons beyond genetics. google it.
Rockstar Games and Future Green Entertainment announced a new album from The Evil Genius DJ Green Lantern, titled “Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV”.
The eight GTA-exclusive tracks DJ Green Lantern wrote for Liberty City’s “The Beat” radio show, which he hosts, will be on the album, along with eight new songs inspired by the game. He’s joined by some major hip-hop, reggae and R&B artists, including Busta Rhymes, Wyclef, Fat Joe, Styles P and Fabolous, and several other new artists and talent from DJ Green Lantern’s label will feature on the album as well.
The Rockstar team has somewhat of a reputation for its particularity when it comes to musical selections for the game, and executive producer Sam Houser said he’s excited about this album and its “true New York flavor.” “Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV” will be available digitally on May 20th, to be followed by a physical disc launch at an unspecified date.

True I’m not the biggest fan of Lyfe’s voice but never fret, TSS Crew always ponders and deliberates amongst ourselves to ensure nothing but accurate ratings.
