This Hurricane Chris freestyle is crazy. Like I told Gottyâ„¢, I can’t even think of 7 minutes of things to talk about in conversation let alone make them rhyme and flow. What’s more insane is this is the dude behind “Ay Bay Bay”?!? Wild.
I applaud Chris for proving me wrong. My misconception about his skill set was thorough, and I apologize. His flow is so effortless it got me thinking about MCs diametrically opposed to him. The ones who make their job look hard. The ones who even make me feel like I should start rapping.
In my numerous rap-to-basketball analogies I spew to anyone who will listen, I site how the freestyle is like one-on-one. Every professional thinks they’re the best – in fact, that swagger is necessity – and could cross anyone, but truth is someone’s going to lose. Some are going to be flat-out awful. And just as on the court, in the freestyle there are fade aways that always look fresh, and then there are lay-ups that look easy and land tired…
1) “Off the top of the dome” – I’m not sure who started saying “dome” instead of “head,” but it’s used so often “head” seems refreshing and original. Unless you’re talking about getting dome, this phrase is as weak of a filler as “Ummm” or “Uhhhh” or “Youknowwhatimsayin.” A quick glance at my thesaurus lists myriad alternatives: brain, cranium, mind, noodle, pate, poll, skull. The day I hear someone spit “off the top of my noodle,” is the day I rest.
2) Weak metaphors – This falls under my cornucopia of rap/basketball analogies. A metaphor is like a dunk – sure it’s glorious if executed well, but you’re still only making a couple of points. That shit better be so fly you get the whole crowd up like, “Daaaaaamn!”
3) Saying your own name – There just needs to be a limit, a say-your-own-name quota. I think one self-name-say per 32 bars will suffice. A name loses its impact if overstated because cats just have too much time on their hands to think about what their own name rhymes with. I knew this MC, we’ll call him Tate, who used to talk about “Big Tate/ blowin’ out your birthday cake.” You mean the candles on my birthday cake, Tate?! Come on now…
Other dope sessions off the top of the noodle…

i never doubted hurricane…i hate how a lot of hip hop heads assumes just cuz someone is young and makes something 4 the pop charts, they can’t get down. although he kinda swagger jacks wayne, i suggest checking v.i.c.’s freestyle on rap city as well. he really seems 2 be comin off top, which some of the vets don’t even do nowadays
*note to readers*
Hurricane Chris’s album wasn’t that bad. Peep the review for a refresher.
ahhhh sh*t!… I got one…
Redman in the studio w/ Pul Wall…
Red destroyed that.
It took me listening to “Player’s Rock” or whatever that track was to realize “this kid can spit” before I believed it.
All he needs is a little more exp, which will come w/age, that’ll help broaden his content.
^ I know that Red free you speak of. He dumbed out…and Paul couldn’t do shit to even compare lol.
That “Hand Clap” joint sold Me…shit was hard.
yeah the redman freestyle was HILARIOUS, i think that was funny as hell 2 have redman freestyle then tell paul wall 2 go LMAO
I heard this freestyle before. I was suprised kid was ill. A true freestylist is Talib Kweli…..and of course the Blast Master.
Paul Wall & Redman

Canibus might not have always been coming off the dome, but very few MC’s would wanna go after Him in a cipher.
That redman green lantern joint was mad..
Ain’t that some shit?!
Who would’ve thought?
I truely have a deeper respect for this dude.
yeah….that was my first disappointment. canibus used 2 be my favorite..i thought he was unreal til i started hearing the same lines in other freestyles. can-i-bus and 2000 b.c. canibus>>>>>>>>today’s canibus

Best freestyle line I’ve ever seen dropped…
Big Daddy Kane:
“Ladies f*cking love me, cuz they know that I’m the bomb/ Fresh cut, fresh clothes plus I’m hung like Saddam”
LC you’ve been killing the articles lately. That’s a sick vid. I’ve been up and down Google, anyone have a link to 51/50 Rachet?
lol nebody got this song
vitamin c – graduation song
hahaah my niece needs to sing it
@Jesse H. it wasn’t a freestyle but it was a freestyle true hiphop moment. Kane is performing, killing it and drops the mic. He picks it up and full of swag says(paraphrasing) drop the mic and still come in on time and the crowd goes bananas. perfect.
51/50 Ratchet

He smashed that.
Steel from Coco Bs can go off the top all day nicely.
@ Chuck
that Kane moment was one of THE flyest pieces of showmanship I can ever recall. He truly showed his connection to his old school roots – back to when an MC had to rock the crowd with charisma (swagger) as well as an evenly tight skill-set.
I’ve seen Com Sense freestyle numerous times in concert, and turtlenecks or not, you do not wanna test that brother…
thanks Gotty & Rome.
The Lake Show, bidges!
“Yay-YEAY!” – O’Shea
Yo, anbody got that Rent Soundtrack? 2 disc joint? Holla at me if you do.
What’s the meaning of this Fonz?
hahaha. Nah brother. Don’t even try to play me like that. You know your boy just got married the other day. One of my boys from work wants that joint for his girlfriend. As soon as that shit gets burn on to that disc, it’s gettin deleted immediately.
LMAO!!!!
Just like I thought you’d say haha! Congratulations again…
Black Thought is ill on the freestyles, not to mention AZ.
here goes the 3rd flashing lights video

lol, who saw commons freestyle for a new years party at that one church?
Cue the Vid!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSXnQkqYqA4
yea, i have a greater respect for hurricane, but he essentially was saying the same thing over and over, jus differently…. how may times did he refrence gettin head, poppin his trunk, or sex wit a lil yella? like u said gotty, ill give him a few yrs tho…
So people are finally realising that rappers like Nelly, Hurricane Chris etc. can rap? Unlike these ‘underground’ (hate that term) mcs they realise that making an actual song is very different to spitting with your boys and is why they’re all over the radio making backpackers mad. Shit…I remember Supernatural’s attempts at a record.
He did that EWF sample justice I think.
Nice Read LC.
@gotty
it’s not the good password ?
Supernat…I remember seeing that dude perform & spark an L with us afterwards.

@ Rob
Nobody said Nelly could rap…
and hes sitting down….
@Ampgeez
You didn’t catch that Nelly and Consequence Rap City recently?
@ Rob
Yeah, I caught it, but that wasn’t a freestyle & even though it was alright, considering what Nelly spits on His albums, He couldn’t compete with anyone who’s been menioned in this post. Paul Wall would do Nelly Nel dirty in a battle lol.
Ha ha – you got me with that last line
