Delivered…
AUDIO By MZ on May 2, 2008 at 5:20 pmIt’s funny how when an artist decides to make that blatant attempt at crossover success, the artist’s so-called fan base has a cow. Not saying it’s not justifiable, but it’s usually those same fans that drove the artist to that decision. Bubba Sparxxx is a perfect example.
His 2003 release Deliverance went totally unnoticed by most Hip-Hop fans. The same one who are always clamoring for an artist to let their guard down & give an honest portrayal of their life. Bubba does that and more on this slept-on masterpiece (not classic, there’s a difference).
Sparxxx embraces his country upbringing, giving the listener a tour of growing up poor in LaGrange, Ga. Not one for punchlines & metaphors, he relies on storytelling and a conversational style to get his point across. While simple in his delivery, Bubba is still able to paint quite a vivid picture.
Timbaland & Organized Noize (3 tracks) provided the backdrop for Bubba’s “Hick-Hop” blueprint. Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, Beat boxing, Rock, and Hip-Hop are all mixed together in a gumbo pot for a batch of beats that equate to a Hip-Hop hoedown. Timbaland does some of his best work on this album in terms of providing a seamless, yet diverse collection of beats.
Despite creating the best album possible, Deliverence flopped and Bubba was forced to part paths with Timbaland when Tim’s Beat Club imprint folded. Sparxxx was at the proverbial fork in the road & he chose left. The result? He found moderate success with “Ms. New Booty” and released a very uneven The Charm in 2005 and hasn’t been heard from since. So do yourself a favor & check out Deliverance & wonder what could have been.

victory is mine
that really did feel good, I just opened this pg, man that might just beat that head job I got last night
Ive always thought of him as Timbos answer to Dre’s Eminem.
Oh yeah- I totally forgot I found this album in my glove box last weekend, while cleanin the whip, haven’t listened too a cd in years I dont even think its on the ipod though I might just pop it in too c how the old cd player sounds……
……Rides out in the A
new souf! i was knockin deliverance the other day and thought about how slept on bubba really is and shouldnt be.
In other news, http://youtube.com/watch?v=dKN64o-vHyU
7 year old hood’s…insane…i bet they gonna find a way to blame this on GTA
jus another friendly reminder for anybody out in NYC, roll to BLVD tonight for a Talib show, should be dope.
peace.
this album will always be one of my favorites as far as pushing the envelope. this album was great start to finish, and i could not believe it did not blow up. if fileld m.o.b. would have had those beats this album would have been a classic, but since bubba put it out, it was slept on.
yeah sparxx second album was a concept album that went way over alot of folks heads…I love the production on that joint.
I wont fuck with him anymore though after miss new booty.
he seems like one of those cats that just floats from camp to camp or what ever is HOT at the moment. (kinda like snoop)
either way….when “ugly” came out that shit blew the fuck up.
anyone got the jay-z vs widespread panic mash up? much appreciated
Damn, I remember even my moms could ride to brother Sparxxx on this one! Deliverence was a dope album.
Half of it was dope….
The other half…not so much
It seemed like the album had an identity crisis…
“Am I Contemporary Country or am I Hip-Hop?”
And even Timbo & ON’s dope beats can’t make up for Bubba’s limitations as an MC.
Peace TSS
yo AmpG, check your Myspace.
“Jimmy Mathis” to this day is straight FIRE. I was always pissed that there was never a video for that single.
I gotta go wit Amp - the production was dope as shit (once you got past that country twang) but Bubba couldn’t quite deliver on the lyrical side…good effort tho and definitely good for a few spins…
@ veego - field mob woulda made those beats into classics cuz they’re just flat-out better than bubba…too bad, cuz that’s some shit i’d like to hear
actually there was a video for jimmy mathis but they ended up making it a split video for his debut single.
dude was rappin in a barn.
This is a stunning album, especially when you consider all the crap that came out in ‘03. And since for that matter.
There’s a way to blend genres without coming off as a genre vulture (madonna) or a lazy looper (most Diddy).
Anybody got the instrumentals for Deliverance?
One this joint, Bubba avoided his two biggest selling points (1) being the good time country hick spitter (dirty) (2) the cool ass white boy that MTV can over-hype.
he just made a good album with more lyrical concepts than most–actual stories that you have to listen to in whole to get–not unlike ATLiens or Reasonable Doubt.
I’m not putting Deliverance in that level of craftsmanship, but it’s in a similar category in that you get more out of it if you listen to it as an album instead of checking it for singles and ringtone-fodder.
And if crime mob had this kind of production, it would’ve bombed because who (radio/mainstream audiences) would’ve cared about a couple country brothas being eloquent about their day to day?
by the way, anybody out here like HayStack? just threw that out cuz i got a few of his joints and when he’s on, he does that country swag lyricism thing as good as anybody. not the catchiest hook-writing cat, but he can spit. i think he could’ve done well with some of these beats.
just my two.
Wait wait hold up Madonna- 106&Park
What’d I miss
Beware likes Haystak. Use the search…
@ black canseco - FIELD mob, not crime mob homey
Madonna’s on 106 & Park? she’s one of the biggest hacks in any genre. she works hard at it, but that doesn’t excuse jumping on whatever’s hot just to sell. at least be able to sing and write some part of your own songs.
anyway, that was my point in referencing her. i think bubba avoided that kind of biting on deliverance. the charm was another story.
Not only was ‘Deliverance’ a slept on album, but Bubba as a rapper is slept on too in my opinion. I notice a few of you saying he didn’t ‘live up’ to the beats, but I totally disagree.
The way his flow and lyrics ride the beat on ‘Comin’ Round’ is brilliant, and songs like ‘Nowhere’ and ‘Warrant’ show a different lyrical side to him that I don’t think you saw on Dark Days, Bright nights.
I bought all three of Sparxxx’s albums and loved the first two (DDBN was a little patchy but the good songs were great). The Charm was seriously rubbish in my opinion, and I think from the sound of the beats on that album it seems like that has something to with a record company’s need for their artists to follow the trend, get the singles, get the money.
He was better when he was simply rapping over Timbo’s beats about his life. Humble and memorable. Sadly, I can’t see another Timbaland produced Bubba a;lbum ever happening now that Timbaland is a bigger popstar than Aguilera right now (he’s hardly going to go from Madonna multi-million lead single to album cuts for a stumbling country emcee).
i love field mob - i think they and cunninlynguists are the two most underrated southern hip-hop acts out…u ever heard 613: Ashy to Classy? that shit is straight disgusting…i was just saying i woulda loved it if they got all them dopeass Timbaland and ON beats to spit on
I love this album. Easily in the top few from 03, Timbo kills it on the production side, and Bubba is a likable enough dude, I thought some of the most poignant stuff came when he’d address the comparisons to Em.
p.s. rapidshare happy hours are active right now
all that means is you aint gotta fuck with the cats…they will still make your ass wait two years between downloads.
true…i try to avoid those cats at all cost tho
i find if i really wanna DL a bunch of shit, i can just go back and forth between rapidshare and megaupload with a couple minutes of searching for shit in between and really not end up waiting long at all

http://rapidshare.com/files/112101820/Rich_Boy-Bigger_Than_The_Mayor__The_Mixtape_-_Bootleg_-2008-RAGEMP3.rar
lol @rapidshare… and yeah i did say “crime mob” didn’t i? oops.
anyway Bubba will prolly retire like 70% of the rappers out who get all flustered over their careers.
he’ll end up acting on some HBO series (if he’s lucky) or something.
Just get an account.
a little taste of J. Rawls… and Jonell–who should’ve blown up by now but won’t. not sure why.

the last thing i need right now is another bill i gotta worry about…it does seem like it’s kinda worth it tho…if i was a bootlegger i’d prolly do it
I’m really glad to hear that the hip-hop community remembers this guy. And this Southern gem that we will obviously have to remind people of for years to come.
I remember buying it when it first came out and being entirely disappointed. It was like my second year of being really into hip-hop and I had just finished consuming (over and over again) Illmatic. So, needless to say, my standards were way over Bubba’s head and I was subsequently disappointed. I brought it back (I don’t care - if it sucks, the receipt is still around) and almost forgot about it until like 5 months later. I went and picked up an used copy from a local CD warehouse and put it in.
Literally, my anus tightened. No homo.
Disgusting Timbo production w/ Organized Noize assisting + Bubba’s honest wordplay
= I still have the CD to this day.
Let me check my “MY MUSIC” folder. I’m going to bump that right about……NOW!

i like these too.
HAHAHAHA i graduated 2day from college so I been away but gotdamn, look at all them posts
just 2 clear the record, i never dissed B.O.B. i just didn’t see what y’all thought was so special…gotty called cloud 9 “piff” and i just didn’t agree, amp got his panties in a bunch over that. i also never said finding forever=emo rap, just 2 clear that up too.
then, even while I’m trying 2 take steps towards neutrality, just trying getting on a debate level y’all still going. u flipped cuz i thought the sheek louch was one of the best so far this year. then when i saw y’all hating on a common album before it came out…and thats what it was, lets be real here, it just seemed like y’all were edging towards some kind of underground elitism….even tho i’ve read some of your posts, and i don’t think so
i definitely think y’all got some good shit 2 say, and i look 4ward 2 more debates. but i aint gonna respect your fresh if u gonna just act like what i say has no bearing. word up. be major TSS..be major
^ Yawn…Why keep dropping My name?
Give it a rest Shorty.
Go kick a freestyle or somethin…

Congrats at milli….
Deliverance(the song) is still on one of my playlists…
Congrats Milli, but that degree might be the nail in the coffin in terms of your rap career… lol.
i respect bubba…wasn’t a fan of ms. new booty but the boy got skills and swagger. i mean, he held his own on a track with jadakiss.
thanks contra…shits weird being gradeeated. but u know what that means right?? more time at TSS!! it was held at td banknorth where them celtics play and if i could describe the event with a few words:
OH MY GOD YES!!! OH MY GAWWWWD!!!
lol @ mz
its tough but you know what?? thats 4 anybody, its tough finding a job, its tough trying 2 get in this rap game. i won’t stop tho…i always think about this, jay-z didn’t really pop off until 27. neither did jeezy. but this is why I like coming in here, seeing different perspectives on the game, trying 2 find my niche. enough with my rap spiel
congrats on the paper
With few exceptions, no one really pops off before their 25-26. It’s funny how rap is perceived as a young mans game, but the people on top are almost always near their 30’s.
well…actually ur right. although weezy was like 16 17 when cash money was running shit. then again, hes kind of an exception
i agree…and i think its because of the maturity level it takes 2 realize what you have to do 2 make it.
thanks oed, i appreciate the love yall. …sucks when ur an econ major looking 4 a music industry job tho lol
@ M.Z.
Big Daddy Kane was 20 when Long Live The Kane dropped
Rakim was 18 when Eric B. For President dropped
Nas was 21 when Illmatic dropped
Big & Pac had done more before they turned 25 than most MC’s do in their whole careers…
I think there’s more than a few exceptions to that rule…
BOB = GARBAGE
Those are what I mean by exceptions Amp, you just named 5 outta how many rappers? I didn’t mean it like it doesn’t happen ever. The ratio has to be like 70/30 though if not more.
sample to bubba’s “comin’ round”

yonder mountain string band - to see you coming round
i think bubba did a great job with this album, but imagine shawn jay ripping deliverance, jimmy mathis, come around, etc. my mans voice would have killed that shit.
petey- B.O.B. is good, he is entertaining and doing something different. he is no 3 stacks, but the man does work. i like his music and will support him. i feel sorry that you don’t see it. “fuck you” is nasty he and Boosie get off on that track, i don’t get it. i really ain’t feeling boosie & webbie either, but i’m warming up. B.O.B. is becoming someones album i am looking forward to, and i hope it is as good as deliverance.
just 2 clear the record, i never dissed B.O.B. i just didn’t see what y’all thought was so special…gotty called cloud 9 “piff” and i just didn’t agree, amp got his panties in a bunch over that.
—————————————————————
You stated Your opinion in the comments section of the B.O.B post. I disagreed but You have Your opinion so I left it like that. Then in the comments section of the next post, You kept it going. That’s how it got started. After that, You were just saying stupid ish (i.e. clowning Black Milk, claiming The ‘Tunes & Com have some extensive history of hits, Silverback Gorilla-Album Of The Year?) . It’s nothing personal. If someone states an opinion that I disagree with, I’m gonna call them on it. Why does everyone have to be “hating” or “ganging up” on You. Maybe Cats just didn’t agree with the statements You made. Man up & move on.
Ill be honest I havent heard that much…maybe three songs tops.
Is that enough to pass a judgment? I dont know.
It didnt do much for me…but if you can recomend some shit Ill give it another go.
I was talking about BOB..
Have any of you guys even seen Deliverance. Dope flick….if you like to read, you should check out Sound Unbound edited by DJ Spooky.
@Amp
Also,
Tell Me What emcee’s hadn’t under 30 when he met his big success ? Ookay 50cent, and then.
Deliverance=my favorite Full Album by a white MC…
Em is obviously a much better MC but I like Deliverance better than any of his albums…
Honorable Mention: II the Extreme, of course.
