Words By David D.
Man, what about those Davidson Wildcats?
Yes, I’m a student and damn proud. But even if I weren’t attending Davidson, I’d have been rooting for the ‘Cats.
Why?
Like most people, I like the underdog. I always want the scrappy fighter to pull out with the win. Interestingly enough, this same desire applies to my interest in certain Hip-Hop artists. At one point, the biggest underdog I ever wanted to win was Canibus.
The man came out and challenged an LL who was at an all-time high of annoyance. His lip-licking, “something like a phenomenon,” antics were begging for someone to throw rocks at the throne. Canibus was that guy.
We all know the story, “2nd Round K.O.” was one of the greatest diss records of all-time. Followed by one of the worst debut albums to ever come out. The album, Can-I-Bus, might as well have been called Can-Of-Shit. But still, I rooted for the man. He was always an ill lyricist but lacked any help in terms of production and concepts.
His second album, 2000 B.C. (Before Can-I-Bus), was severely slept on and everything I could hope for from Canibus. From the first absolutely bananas first track and opening lines:
“My offense is a mixture of Mike and Muhammad
Knock an aggin unconscious and talk shit
In bareknuckled boxin, speed is the option
Weavin and dodging with defense and blocking
In the ring, you can not win, the top ten becomes nine dead if I ever decide to hop in…”
For the most part, Canibus stayed rather pedestrian on the album, staying away from the more obscure (see bizarre) topics that have alienated many of his would-be fanbase.
Collabos with Rakim, Rass Kass and a few others really allow Canibus to shine alongside his contemporaries. No, 2000 B.C. is not a classic from beginning to end, but it’s probably the closest to a dream Canibus album we’re gonna get and a moment for me to celebrate a nice victory with my underdog rapper.
Sound off on underdog MCs you root for…

hehe
first obama, then davidson’s curry… us light skinned brothers are making a comeback…
i actually liked can-i-bus… guess i am one the few… the album was a let down in comparison to the freestyles he had out before his debut, but i thought it was still a decent album… but i gave up on the man after his 3rd or 4th release… his career as a whole hurts me to even think about… i don’t know if nyone in hip-hop has fallen off so hard so fast…
i think any artist that isn’t getting any mainstream radio/video play is an underdog to some extent… but little brother is the first that comes to mind…
yo Gotty
you got your Agassi’s yet?
waiting on my pair in the mizzail…copped from Eastbay with that 20% discount…lol, had to go half a size up, I hope they fit, sometimes retros are snug
underdog MC i root for? One.Be.Lo
You cant eat a nigga ass like me!!!!!!!!!
^ best canibus line ever – maybe? no? alright … maybe worst line in rap ever?
he eats…eats….eats emcees
^^^ ROFL! Real T…
Canibus threw rocks at the throne and was subsequently black balled from the industry.
the perpetual underdogs i root for are – Royce and Joe Budden. Could probly throw Cormega and AZ in there too
yeah this album hard that hard battle shit… ‘i gotta glue my hand to my gun’ shit
I see a resemblence of T.I. and/or Rich Boy in that pic.
CanIBus was one underdog I didn’t root for. I heard him freestyle for like, what, 13-14 minutes. That was tight. But not better than LL.
rootin for my boy Bubba. Deliverence was an amazing album that I never expected.
“Deliverance” was an amazing album. I believe it’s when Timbaland really strayed away from what he had been doing for so long and finally broke out into something new. Amazing mix of country/hip-hop blends that worked perfectly for Bubba’s southern vibe. Great, slept-on CD.
SICK POST!!!!
I’m a UNC grad and we were all pullin for Davidson first off. Curry was unstoppable. Amazing.
Canibus is also one of my Top 5 artists, and I truly believe the best lyricist of all time. Anyone who disagrees with that just doesn’t understand Canibus’ rhymes, they must be over their head. Everyone thinks he just comes up with crazy shit he doesn’t understand. But the truth is if you do the research, all of his shit makes sense. ‘Bis has had me up on Google tons of times figuring out his shit. No other rapper would make you do that.
Homey would also eat any rapper in the game right now. People love Lil Wayne these days but homey would get devoured by ‘Bis.
I personally think “Rip The Jacker” is his best alb.
