Baseball is associated with many things but Hip-Hop? More commonly associated with sports such as basketball and football, Hip-Hop is now shining some light on America’s pastime. With a new generation of players being raised on Rap music, you can see its influence from the way they dress to their warm-up playlists on their iPod.
For years Hip-hop heads having been wearing jerseys and of course baseball caps, but you rarely see the reverse. Today you can see examples like Joba Chamberlain, relief pitcher for the New York Yankees. The Yankee franchise breeds clean-cut players a la Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, but for Chamberlain this is definitely not the case as he was seen last Monday leaving the rained out Yankee home opener rocking a hoody, fitted cap, baggy jeans and Air Force One sneakers. Can you tell me another cat in the Major leagues doing the same?
On the field something simple as they way you wear your hat can indicate your Hip-Hop affiliation. Detroit Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis and his now signature tipped brim equate to be Hip-Hop, simply on the style. Funny how many people labeled him as such.
It’s all about image and perception and we all know Hip-Hop has never gotten a fair shake (Think Imus equals objectionable lyrics). With the game of baseball already tainted with performance enhancing drugs, how interesting would it be if the game got “thugged out?” With the MLB’s resurgence in revenue last year tying the perennial leading NFL with a net of 6 billion dollars, obviously they don’t want to lose cream over this potential new “image” in their newfound popularity. So when you see pitching phenom Joba Chamberlain rock a black hoody and a fitted, Hip-Hop’s influence even in subtle unintentional doses can cause a stir.

Hmmm can we get a plant life jack splash interview
i didn’t know baseball was tied with the NFL! damn, get that paper. . .
but I don’t think this is the first time that people are getting an urban shot into america’s favorite pasttime. I got one name for you:
Ken Griffey, Jr.
I remember he’d give post game interviews with his hat to the back, and when I was younger, all you needed on the block was a pair of the Griffey’s!
now, the real question is will there be a legitimate star with that swag that white kids will want to be like? if that happens, then there’s gonna be a problem.
The Yankees didn’t breed A-Rod…
“Can you tell me another cat in the Major leagues doing the same?”
Off the top of the head I can tell you one name: MANNY RAMIREZ who not only rocks a baggy jersey on the field with a do-rag under the cap, but was on TV ads for G-Unit sneakers with Fiddy.
Also..
David Wright always comes out to some Hip-Hop.
Lastings MIlledge put out a (horrible) album out last year…
Ryan Howard
Prince Fielder
Delmon Young
There’s plenty of Hip-Hop heads at the MLB level
i’m convinced that the only two reasons MLB is on par with the NFL in terms in revenue is because:
1. Their season is entirely too damn long. They play 8 months of the year vs. NFL’s 6 months.
2. The NY Yankees. That team brings in so much dough by its damn self that they could start fund a small nation if need be.
As for Dontrelle Willis, I respect his hiphop-ness, but I thought he rocked his hat to the left because he was VL/Stone-related. (that’s for you G$)
About time baseball got G’d up, because if you know about baseball’s history then you would understand that it hasn’t been the most minority-friendly sport in the past.
willis is a lefty – a lot of left-handed baseball players tip their cap that way.
and like somebody said, mlb is full of hip-hop heads.
what mlb isn’t full of, however, are african-american americans. it’s also an old boys club to the core, so i don’t think the league has to worry about a hip-hop infiltration any time soon.
Who gives a shit about how sports and hip hop mesh? This is dumb.
@ if it is so dumb…why the fuck did your dumb ass feel a need to comment
^@GASFACEVICTM
I know CC Sabathia rocks his cap to the side, Jimmy Rollins is about to start up a record label, so its no doubt that hip-hop and baseball are related

LONDON – Naomi Campbell was arrested at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 on Thursday for allegedly spitting at a police officer, Sky News reported. Police said a 37-year-old woman was arrested at the terminal on suspicion of assaulting police.
The Metropolitan Police spokesman refused to identify the woman, or say whether the incident took place inside the terminal or aboard a plane. He spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with police policy.
BAA PLC, the company that runs Heathrow, didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment. British Airways PLC, the terminal’s sole occupant, referred questions to BAA and London police.
Campbell’s publicist, Selina Aponte, left Heathrow’s police station, where the model had been taken, just before 10 p.m. but told waiting reporters she had not seen the British model, who had been due to fly to Los Angeles.
“We have all seen the reports but I don’t know anything,” Aponte said. “Naomi was flying to L.A. She has family and friends over there and is always going over.”
In January 2007, Campbell pleaded guilty in New York City to misdemeanor assault for throwing her cell phone at her maid in a dispute over a missing pair of jeans. She was ordered to do community service and attend a two-day anger-management program.
Campbell pleaded guilty in Toronto in 2000 to an assault charge for beating an assistant while making a film in Canada in 1998. Under an agreement with prosecutors, Campbell expressed remorse and was released without punishment or a criminal record.
I know mad ball players come out to hip hop songs. David Wright has Bass Monkey playing whenever he gets up to bat.
and in the bay, I went to a Giants game, and i forgot who, but one of the players went up to bat to Tell me when to go. And I KNOW they go crazy in Oakland. Their mascot goes straight hyphy.
